I'm terrified. Everytime you walk out that door, everytime I call you, and you don't pick up the phone, my heart stops. But how am I suppose to protect you girls, right, when you go and do this? And then you try to make me the monster!
~ Alice to Betty.

Alice Smith is a supporting character in the CW series Riverdale. She starts off as a major antagonist in the first season, but she becomes more of an anti-hero as the series progresses. She then appears in the second, third, fourth and fifth seasons as a supporting protagonist.

Biography[]

Background[]

Alice Smith in 1988

Alice was born sometime in 1974 or 1975 to unnamed parents in the Southside of Riverdale where she also grew up. Presumably, she grew up on her own with extreme poverty whilst her parents most probably neglected or abused her. She attended Riverdale High as a teenager and was also secretly a member of the Southside Serpents.

Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Midnight Club[]

RD-Promo-3x04-The-Midnight-Club-13-Teen-Alice

Teenage Alice as a member of the Midnight Club in Riverdale High, 1991-1992

In her Junior Year of high school in Riverdale High, Alice (a Southside Serpent) found out she was pregnant with FP Jones's child. Scared, she told this to a teenage Hermione Gomez and Sierra McCoy who told her that the pregnancy could be false. Soon however, a teenage Penelope Blossom (the hall monitor) walked into the room and told the 3 that they are going to get in trouble for being late. Alice insulted Penelope when she asked for the hall slip which led into a huge physical fight between the 2 girls which caused all 4 of them to go to Saturday detention with FP and Fred Andrews.

In detention, Alice, Fred, Sierra, FP, Hermione and Penelope play Secrets & Sins to pass the time . When it's Alice's turn, FP asks her to tell the time she lit up a Southside dustbin on fire, Alice responds by revealing to everyone else that FP lives in the Southside in Sunnyside Trailer Park with his father Forsythe Pendleton Jones I and that he parades around in a Varsity jacket like a Northsider when really he is going to be a member of the criminal greaser biker gang the Southside Serpents in the future. Soon after Penelope's secret is let out, her and Hermione get into an argument over it which leads to a physical fight between the 2. This causes Principal Featherhead to give all 6 of them 6 weeks of Saturday detention.

One Saturday afternoon, felling bored, the group find a Gryphons & Gargoyles game in Miss Krabappel's desk and decide to play it. Alice becomes and roleplays the Witch in the game and she is sent off with Fred by Penelope and Sierra to collect some items in the library. In the library, Alice and Fred talk out their problems, Alice mentions that she is pregnant with FP's child and Fred mentions that his dad is really sick but he has to hide it. Feeling an attraction, Alice and Fred kiss briefly but decide not to have a relationship.

After the items are found and after the first game is over, Alice, Fred, Sierra, FP, Hermione and Penelope start playing Gryphons & Gargoyles more in the real world and start roleplaying as their characters in the game, first in Saturday detention and later on, in Saturday nights, calling themselves "The Midnight Club" with FP and Alice starting a relationship. One night, they run into 4 other students roleplaying as characters from Gryphons & Gargoyles: Tom Keller, Hiram Lodge, Darryl Doiley and Marty Mantle. Darryl mentions that the 4 of them got the idea to roleplay based on instructions they found in the restricted section of the library. Realizing their similar stories, the 10 decide to play a bigger game due to the same invitations they got as well.

One day, Fred, FP, Alice, Sierra, Penelope, Hermione, Hiram, Tom, Darryl and Marty find invitations in their locker rooms and realize that they have to ascend to the next level of the game and to come tonight to the school to do it. At night, the 10 arrive roleplaying as their characters and listen to Penelope's instructions about what to do to ascend, including drinking the laid out chalices in the goblets. After they ascend, Alice, Fred, FP, Sierra and Hermione show Penelope, Hiram, Marty, Darryl and Tom a concert of the rock band group, The Fred Heads. After that, they all drink from the chalices and goblets and get high on Fizzle Rocks from Hiram. Alice is the only one who doesn't due to her pregnancy and sees everybody starting to behave more erratic when drugged. As she walks to the bathroom, Alice notices Principal Featherhead walking into the school and sees him walking near the lockers. In the bathroom, a figure by the name of The Gargoyle King attacks her in the toilets, causing Alice to run away from the school. She tries to call the Midnight Club later that night after she left, but they never pick up her calls.

The next day, Alice walks to school and finds that none of the members are there. She then runs into Hermione who tells her that Fred's father passed away whilst they were partying last night. After that, Alice sees Fred, FP, Sierra and Penelope and them along with Darryl, Tom, Hiram and Marty and all the other students and staff notice Principal Featherhead's dead body fall from the downstairs school closet and reveal itself, shocking them all.

Later on, after Fred's father's funeral procession, Alice meets with the Midnight Club at a school classroom where she confronts them about Featherhead's death, who killed him and who was the mysterious Gargoyle King. After getting into an argument with Penelope over the fact that she may have killed him, Alice and everybody else decide to disband the Midnight Club to stop more deaths (including their own), Alice plans to get rid of Featherhead's body and everyone makes a pact to never speak of this again and estrange themselves from each other, ignoring each other whilst passing through the school halls. Alice decides to leave the Southside and ends her career as a Southside Serpent, abandoning her clothes and rebellious attitude and becoming more acquainted with the Northside behaviour and fashion sense. She meets and dates a young Hal Cooper and later gets pregnant and gives birth to Charles Smith at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy, abandoning him over there and marrying Hal wherein she has 2 daughters from the marriage: Betty and Polly Cooper.

Season 1[]

Alice is first seen at the Sweetwater River with Hal. Jason Blossom had supposedly drowned, and Alice openly hoped that it was true. Afterwards, she spends the next five episodes or so emotionally abusing and neglecting Betty. She is unwilling to give Betty any information about her sister, Polly, despite Betty's pleads.

Later, when Betty visits Polly at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy, it is revealed that Alice and Hal lied to Polly about Jason's death. Polly confronts Alice about this, and Alice claims that she was trying to protect her. Some time later, Alice finds out that Hal attempted to have Polly's unborn kids aborted because they had Blossom blood. She confronts Hal about this, and she kicks him out of the house.

However, Hal reveals that the Cooper family is related to the Blossom family after Polly was sent to live with the Blossoms. Alice, Hal, and Betty confront Clifford Blossom and Penelope Blossom about this, and they take Polly back to their house.

Towards the end of the season, Alice hands a USB drive to Sheriff Keller and Mayor McCoy, and the USB reveals that Jason was murdered by Clifford (his own father).

Season 2[]

Alice is not a villain in this season, and she spends most of the season trying to discover the true identity of the Black Hood, along with Betty and her friends Archie, Veronica, and Jughead.

Season 3[]

After her husband was revealed to be the Black Hood, Alice joined the Farm in order to heal from the emotional trauma. However, Betty becomes suspicious that the Farm is mostly likely a cult, and she witnesses Alice and Polly dropping Polly's kids into a bonfire. Fortunately, this turns out to be a hallucination. After Betty and Jughead are attacked by the Gargoyle King, Alice and FP reveal that they played the game "Gryphons and Gargoyles" back in high school.

Trivia[]

  • While she is portrayed as a kind and caring mother in the comics, Alice is portrayed more villainously in the TV show.
  • Alice is allergic to ponies.
  • She was crowned Homecoming Queen.
  • She used to be a rebellious teenager from the wrong side of the streets and got knocked up at a young age like Polly. Unlike Alice, Polly kept her children.
