~ The dying Alicent to her septa. |
Queen Alicent Hightower is a major character in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise and the tritagonist of the television adaptation House of the Dragon.
She was a member of House Hightower and became the second wife of King Viserys I Targaryen. She was the daughter of Ser Otto Hightower, who had been Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I, Viserys I, and later his grandson Aegon II. She had several brothers, including her younger sibling Ser Gwayne Hightower (made older than her in the TV series). She was the mother of King Aegon II, Queen Helaena, Prince Aemond, and Prince Daeron the Daring. She was the grandmother of Prince Jaehaerys, Queen Jaehaera, and Prince Maelor, the children of Aegon and Helaena.
In House of the Dragon, she is portrayed by Olivia Cooke as an adult and by Emily Carey as a teenager.
Personality[]
In the novels[]
“ | The city is yours, Princess. But you will not hold it long. The rats play when the cat is gone, but my son Aemond will return with fire and blood. | „ |
~ Alicent to Rhaenyra, during the latter's short-lived victory. |
Alicent was described as precocious at the age of fifteen and clever and lovely at eighteen. Unlike her television counterpart, Alicent in the books is depicted as far more scheming, ambitious, arrogant and in control. Her personality resembled more the likes of Ellyn Reyne, Catelyn Stark, and Selyse Florent. She was the original main leader of the Greens, prior her son's coronation, after which she continued to serve as one of the main leaders, sitting in the King's small council.
Unlike her television counterpart, Alicent is a powerful leader of the Greens and the party's figurehead. She is fiercely loyal to her political side and her family, especially all her children, being very protective of them and always defending their actions, no matter how bad they may be. This version of Alicent has no personal attachment to Rhaenyra Targaryen and the two have nothing but contempt for each other. Alicent is nearly a decade older than Rhaenyra and she is her distant stepmother. Alicent constantly supports executing Rhaenyra and her entire family branch to secure permanent safety and the future of her children.
Alicent showed cruelty and indifference toward the smallfolk, as she reportedly laughed upon hearing about the sack of the town of Tumbleton by the Greens' military forces, in which men and children were massacred, women and girls as young as eight were raped, babies were impaled, and wealthy citizens were tortured, as she denounced the entire town's population as traitors.
Even after the Dance of the Dragons, Alicent remained unforgiving toward former Blacks and was against peace between the two political parties. She opposed the marriage of her granddaughter Jaehaera to the new king Aegon III and was absent from the wedding ceremony. She had no issues encouraging her granddaughter to commit vile acts, as she terrified her by suggesting she slit Aegon's throat. Alicent's stubborness and permanent hatred for her enemies led Ser Tyland Lannister, Lord Regent and Hand of the King, to have her confined to Maegor's Holdfast for the brief remainder of her life.
In the television series[]
Alicent deeply cares about her family. When she feels stressed, she picks at her fingernails, a habit she's had since she was young.
Even as a kid, Alicent loved learning, especially about history. She always tried hard to do what was expected of her, especially by her father. She was super loyal to her best friend, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and felt really close to her.

Trivia[]
- George R. R. Martin's notes dating back to 1999 named Alicent Hightower as "Lysa Hightower".
- Alicent's relationship with Rhaenyra as best friend (and some say, unconsummated love interest) is an adaptation of the series. In the books, Alicent was older than Rhaenyra because, while Alicent would have been eighteen when she married Viserys, Rhaenyra had turned nine when this happened, and the only relationship that could have existed before becoming family would be that of a court lady with the king's daughter.
- In the books, Laena Velaryon plays the role of Rhaenyra's childhood best friend and surrogate sister (and potential female love interest).
- Alicent was the second of the three Hightowers who married the then-royal Targaryens. Before Alicent was Queen Ceryse Hightower, the first wife of Maegor I Targaryen. After the Dance of the Dragons, Garmund Hightower (who was one of the sons of Alicent's cousin Ormund) married Princess Rhaena Targaryen, daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon. Garmund and Rhaena had six daughters.
