The Alien Machines are the main antagonists of the National Geographic docufiction When Aliens Attack. The machines were sent by an unknown alien race presumably many lightyears away from Earth after locating it, with the intent to forcefully harvest the planet's resources.
Biography[]
During the 21st century, a space observation agency detects large object approaching Earth, coming on a path past the asteroid belt. The agency spreads the word to government authorities and other organizations when they realize the object is probably artificial since it's following a path. Over the course of a few hours the object, which turns out to be an enormous country sized mothership is remotely parked in the exosphere. After failed attempts to establish contact with the mothership, it releases an E.M.P pulse, frying every Earth satellite and stopping operational ATMs, GPS, and phones. Many of the world's governments have become aware of the presence of the visitors, and hours later, the mothership has several smaller city sized ships descend upon major cities across Earth. In America, the military sends F-18 jets to survey the craft in New York and Washington D.C, but in response to a possible threat, the ship releases high speed drones that destroy the jets with energy projectiles. The jets attempt to fire back but miss, and hundreds of drones from the ships around the world start laying waste to the cities, followed by bipedal robots.
The drones are fast moving and all the machines are shielded and armed with destructive firearms, making it impossible to resist them. The American government proposes dropping global conflicts and disputes to focus on them and allows the full force of Earth's military to target the machines in their respective invaders. It amounts to nothing in the long run and the majority of militaries are completely demolished and humans are forced to evacuate cities. Resorting to drastic measures, the American president gives the order to release their strongest nuclear weapon hoping that it will destroy the ship in D.C. A submarine releases the nuke, which releases 8 self guided warheads that hit the D.C ship at once and completely destroy everything in a four mile diameter, but the ship's armor proves stronger than expected and is completely undamaged. After this, surviving humans are given the order to retreat from cities and live in wild locations where the machines aren't.
Much of the population is reduced over months, but the surviving soldiers realize that the aliens have been specifically targeting city infrastructure and vehicles, with humans being collateral. When they see cube shaped harvester drones they realize that the invaders are machines and that's why they didn't respond to their signals, as they were programmed with orders. Since the harvesters are collecting trees they presume the aliens that made them need resources after depleting their planet and desperately search for another. A group of soldiers plant C-4 on the trees where the harvesters are collecting and successfully destroy one. After a full year the humans have devised a strategy to take the machines out. Realizing the insides of the ships are vulnerable, they have suicide soldiers armed with bombs strap themselves to balloons to fly up to the city ships. The operation takes place across the globe and organized, with soldiers targeting vulnerable parts of the ships to plant the bombs on. The operation is successful and the majority of the ships across the world fall. Determining that the battle is lost, the mothership orders the remaining ships to retreat and they leave Earth.
