Alistair Harper is an antagonist in the V for Vendetta limited comic book series, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd.
Biography[]
Harper is a Scottish gangster who moved down to Norfolk to avoid the civil strife that broke out after World War III. He first appears at the Kitty-Kat Keller club where he meets with his associate Gordon Deitrich and beats up a gangster named Robert who interrupted them to tell them that his mother was being sent to a death camp by Norsefire. He later gets into a business dispute with Gordon and murders him by skewering him with a cutlass through his front door. Gordon's lover Evey Hammond tries to kill Harper in revenge, but before she can shoot him she is kidnapped by V. V later offers to kill Harper for her but she decides to let him live.
After V triggers civil unrest all over England, Peter Creedy, head of the secret police known as "the Finger", recruits Harper to lead a group of civilian auxiliaries for the Fingermen consisting of around a dozen "hard cases" who will help the Finger to round up subversives and suppress the rioting. Harper and his men abuse their position to beat up random people and molest women under the guise of strip searches. However, Creedy has an ulterior motive for recruiting Harper's goon squad, as he is planning a coup against Norsefire's dictator Adam Susan and needs the support of a group with no loyalty to Norsefire. Harper agrees to support Creedy in the event of a coup, but secretly makes another deal with Helen Heyer, wife of Norsefire's head of surveillance Conrad Heyer, to dispose of Creedy afterwards and put her husband in charge. Harper and Helen begin having an affair behind Conrad's back.
After Susan is assassinated by Rosemary Almond (coincidentally with a gun she had bought from Harper), Creedy declares that the Finger has assumed control of the country with the support of Harper's thugs and declares a state of emergency. However, Creedy's time at the top is short-lived as Harper immediately betrays him and murders him with a straight razor, concealing the crime by turning up Creedy's emergency broadcast to drown out the noise. He then has a word with Creedy's deputies and convinces them to accept Conrad Heyer as their new leader. His job done, he returns to the Heyer home to meet Helen only to be attacked by Conrad Heyer, who has had the details of his wife's affair with Harper revealed to him by V. Conrad gets the upper hand and batters Harper to death with a wrench, but Harper manages to fatally wound him with his razor before dying.
