Alli, also known as the Bird Monster, is the main antagonist of the 2022 live-action Finnish horror film Hatching. After killing its mother, a young girl named Tinja raises a crow's offspring, which turns into a giant mutant bird-like monster. As Alli matured, it would go on to take Tinja's form and share a psychic connection with her.
Both she and the main character Tinja were portrayed by Siiri Solalinna.
Appearance[]
In the beginning, Alli appeared to look like a giant crow-human hybrid. As the story progressed, it would begin to lose more of its crow-like qualities and take on a more human form, being that of Tinja.
Personality[]
In the beginning, Alli acted very erratically, scaring Tinja and fleeing the scene. After returning the next night, it was revealed to have a softer side for Tinja, as it saw her as its mother. Once Tinja accepted this motherly role, Alli began to act more like a house pet rather than the former. Alli relied on Tinja for everything, including food and comfort. This would cause Alli to follow Tinja everywhere, and to do some unspeakable–including murdering the noisy next door neighbor's dog–in an attempt to please her.
It was revealed later in the movie that Tinja and Alli shared some sort of psychic connection, being linked together through some kind of force that caused them to see through each other's eyes and feel each other's pain. This is what allowed Alli to know exactly what was upsetting Tinja, and for Tinja to know what Alli was doing. As the story progressed, Alli became more closely connected to Tinja's mother, as seen when she caressed the scar on her leg while stalking her at night. By the end of the movie, it is heavily implied that Alli would go on to become the new Tinja.
Biography[]
After her mother killed a crow and made her throw it in the trash, Tinja awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of a crow making noises. Noticing that the crow was no longer in the garbage bin, she followed the noise into the forest to find the crow barely clinging onto life. When the girl attempted to comfort it, it bit her and so she killed it with a rock. After killing it, she noticed its egg, taking it home feeling guilty for its abandonment. After a few days, the egg began to grow to an abnormal size for that of a crow egg. One night, after Tinja came in crying, her tears caused the egg to hatch. Tinja escaped to the closet as the creature emerged. After the creature found her in the closet, the two startled each other and the monster escaped out the window.
The next day the girl found the beast out in the garden, and it joined her in her room later that night. Although at first aggressive, it began to show signs of affection towards Tinja, and so Tinja decided to become its mother. That night she gave the monster a bath and decided to allow it to sleep under her bed. That same night, the neighbors' dog would not stop barking, and so the monster left to kill it. It came back and brought the dog's carcass to Tinja as a gift. Tinja vomited, which the creature happily slurped up off the floor.
The next day, Tinja went out to get bird seeds for the creature. On that same day, Tinja's brother antagonized his sister, causing the monster to become upset. The brother eventually came into Tinja's room and hearing something under her bed, he looked down. Something ended up scratching off the mask he was wearing, causing him to become scared. Later that night, the girl was upset with the bird but still chewed up bird seed and spat it out for the creature. She noticed the creature growing blond hair, soon after it spoke its first words. This word would be "Alli", the name of a girl from a song that Tinja sang. Alli would go on to become what Alli was known as from this point on. Even later, the bird began to morph into a form more closely resembling the girl. Her brother would mistake this for her, get spooked and run away upon seeing it. The bird would make its way to her mother's room where it would caress the woman's scar before leaving.
Tinja began dressing up Alli, telling it that it looked beautiful after putting a flower in its hair. After Alli sensed Tinja's distress over the competition she had at her gymnastics competition, Alli left the home and followed the girl on foot. After catching up to the girl, Alli would attack, causing the girl to have to go to the hospital.
When Tinja and her mother went on a trip to the home of the man that her mother was cheating on her father with, Alli would follow them there. Tinja would lay Alli down in bed with her and tell her that she was going to take care of her. The next morning Tinja would learn about what happened to the girl, and upon returning to Alli she raised a hand at her, having it fall on herself instead. As Tinja began to cry, Alli pulled her in close and began to comfort her. Alli now very much resembled Tinja. Later on, Tinja would be seen feeding Alli with a bowl. The man would come upstairs to check on her, opening the door to see who he thought was Tinja. This would turn out to be Alli, who charged him, Tinja quickly closing the door but not before Alli doing significant damage to his hand.
Tinja and her mother would leave the next day, Alli remaining at home. This was the day of the competition, and during it Tinja began to have visions of Alli approaching the man's baby with an axe. In order to stop Alli, Tinja purposefully failed her landing, causing a psychic link with Alli that would make her drop her axe. The man would burst through the door, again seeing Alli instead of Tinja, who ran out of the window. Alli would later reappear again at Tinja's home, but this time Tinja wanted nothing to do with her, pushing out the window. The father would notice Alli on the ground, asking her what she was doing outside thinking that it was Tinja. Alli would back away and growl.
Alli would find another way inside, coming into the mother's room. The mother would believe that this was Tinja, and seeing as she was unkempt she began brushing the girl's hair. While brushing, a piece of the girl's scalp came off, causing the mother to back away in fear as the creature approached her. The creature hugged the mother, digging her gnarly fingers into her back, causing them to bleed. Tinja then arrived, the mother now seeing the two side by side. Tinja demanded the monster to leave, causing Alli to get on all fours and have her jaw unhinge. She scurried away as Tinja's mother comforted a crying Tinja.
The two decided to follow the monster with weapons in hand. Tinja's mother would find Alli in Tinja's room, where Tinja jumped on top of her, causing Tinja's mother to drop the knife. The two struggled, the mother getting the upper hand and stabbing Alli. This also hurt Tinja, and so Tinja tried to explain their connection. Her mother didn't listen and attempted to deliver a death blow. Tinja jumped in the way, causing her to be stabbed in the heart instead of Alli. Tinja then fell onto Alli and bled into her mouth. The brother and his father arrived in as the entire family watched on in horror. Alli's jaw then fixed itself as she rose to her feet, her eyes no longer being grey but this time brown.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Psychic link - One of Alli's key abilities is its psychic link to Tinja. This link allows Alli to both feel the girl's pain–as seen when they both writhe in agony after Alli is stabbed—and psychologically–as seen when the girl knew something bad was about to happen when getting visions of Alli's wrongdoings. This connection allows Tinja to have some physical control over Alli, as seen when she was able to make it drop its axe while the two were miles apart.
- Bird-like characteristics - Alli, originally being hatched from a crow egg, shares many characteristics with that of a baby crow. This includes only being able to eat what is vomited up, and weakly flying away when it is startled.
- Feral aggression - Alli has feral instincts of being a hybrid human crow and attacks anyone that threatens or upsets Tinja.

Trivia[]
- Alli most likely represents what Tinja's mother made Tinja into due to her overbearing lifestyle and high expectations. This is further supported when at the end of the movie Tinja's mother accidentally kills the original Tinja, leaving Alli in her place.
