Alonso Perez is one of the two main antagonists of the Tintin comic book The Broken Ear and it's 1991 animated adaptation.
He is a South American man who also searches for a diamond, the Heart of the Jungle, concealed in an idol, along with Ramon Bada. They try to stop Tintin from getting the diamond before them, but they later fell into the water while attempting to kill Tintin for making them lose the diamond, which caused them to drown to death, sending them to Hell. He also murdered the one who initially stole the idol along with Ramon Bada, Rodrigo Tortilla, who previously assassinated Jacob Balthazar, the one who created the imitation of the idol for them.
Appearance[]
Alonso Perez is a man with a black beard and thick eyebrows, as well as black hair. He usually wears a brown coat , a white shirt and a red tie.
Biography[]
Alonso Perez is first seen when Tintin is holding Ramon Bada at gun point while he was searching for the parrot he stole from Tintin after his original owner was assassinated. From behind a wall, he turns the lights off, allowing Ramon to throw a knife at Tintin, but he misses. If he threw his knife more to the left, he would've killed Tintin. He is later seen having a conversation with Ramon in order to think of a plan to get the idol before Tintin. But the parrot annoys Ramon to the point he throws a knife at him, which once again misses and hits a window where Tintin was watching them.
He and Ramon later became part of Alcazar's soliders, only to encounter Tintin again, who became a colonel. They later hire a Mexican bandit to kidnap Tintin and take him into a cabin, where he is tied up. Ramon then persuades Tintin to tell them where the idol is. Tintin then lies about it's whereabouts. Afterwards, Alonso almost shoots Tintin, but they are struck by a ball of lightning, freeing Tintin. He is then arrested along with Ramon and sent to prison, but they later escape. Ramon attempts to assassinate Tintin, but Pablo was also trying to kill Tintin under the orders of Trickler, which fails his attempt.
They later deserted from the San Theodoran army and encountered Tintin again in the jungle. Alonso holds Tintin at gun point with his rifle, telling him that he has one last bullet and that it will be for him if he doesn't tell the truth about the location of the idol. However, Tintin manages to escape and capture the duo, only for them to knock Tintin into the water so he can be eaten by piranhas, but this fails as Tintin escapes again. It is later revealed that Alonso and Ramon are the ones who murdered Rodrigo Tortilla, the thief who originally stole the idol, who previously assassinated Balthazar.
Later, Alonso and Ramon finally obtain the idol on the S.S Washington, but Tintin confronts them and they fight each other for the idol, causing it to break and the diamond to roll down into the water. Angered that the diamond is now lost, they attempt to kill Tintin, only for them to fall into the water. Tintin manages to get back up to the surface thanks to the ship's sailors saving him, but Ramon and Alonso drowned after strangling each other to unconsciousness, each believing that the other is Tintin. They are then seen carried by smiling, pitchfork-bearing, winged demons in what appears to be Hell.
Trivia[]
- In the 1991 animated adaptation, which was famous for censoring some of the most mature elements from the source material, Alonso Perez and Ramon Bada do not drown, instead being arrested for their crimes. It's likely this change was enacted due to religious concerns, as they are implied to have been taken to Hell in the original comic, which could have inconvenienced non-Christian audiences. No other novel in the Tintin series has any "afterlife" moment like this, except in dreams - suggesting that the image of them in Hell was only something Tintin imagined.
- It is unknown how Alonso Perez became part of the San Theodoran army and then deserted it later on, as it was never shown on screen.
