- NOTE: This article is about Aloysius Minch from the original EarthBound video games. For his novelization counterpart, see here.
“ | By the way, I would be happy if you left sometime soon. I'm tired of your family living next door. We've loaned your father a lot of money. It may have been a hundred thousand dollars or more... Well, I guess it really could have been less, but because of the loan, my family and I now live in poverty! | „ |
~ Aloysius to Ness. |
Aloysius Minch (in Japanese: Umbrami Minch) is a minor antagonist of the 1994 video game EarthBound/Mother 2.
He is the oppressive patriarch of the Minch Family, acting as the ex-husband of Lardna and the abusive father of Picky and Porky. He is also the next door neighbor of Ness and his family, acting as their rivals. His abusive nature towards his children is partly to blame for Porky's downfall into evil due to him and Lardna's abusive parenting.
Biography[]
Alyosius's early life is completely unknown but at some point, he loaned some money to Ness's father, which he never got paid back for (supposedly). This caused Aloysius to become spiteful towards Ness's family.
When Porky and Picky were late one night, he found his children and spanked them 100 times (in the English version, this was changed to taking away their dessert for 10 years.)
He is later seen at the Monotoli building in Fourside with a lap of wealth while his son became the head of the building. Once the Evil Mani Mani was defeated, his son fled the scene, leaving Aloysius behind, who later drowned his sorrows away at the bar (café in English version), avoiding his wife who seemingly moved on from him with a another man.
Personality[]
Aloysius is an incredibly selfish and greedy man who is hungry for money and power. He is not above taunting Ness for his father not paying him back a loan. His house is significantly larger than Ness's, yet he complains about his family being in poverty. It is possible that this is a lie to earn Ness's sympathy.
He is abusive towards his children, significantly more so in the original Japanese version, going as far as spanking them 100 times. The only time he gets along with his son is when he becomes the mayor of Fourside, showing that he only cares about his son when he is providing him with luxury. After that, he doesn't seem to care when his son is gone, whether or not he knows he is Giygas' right-hand minion and committing multiple crimes.
While not caring towards his children, he may at least have some care for his wife (who is admittedly just as abhorrent as him) and regularly takes her on expensive dates, although he may have instead done this just to appease her, which might imply that he only saw her as a potential gateway to more wealth, and he is shown to be depressed and drinking away his sorrows when she cheats on him, he’s only depressed because he did so to her when he was in luxury and being surrounded by loosely-dressed women, showing how much of a hypocrite he is.

Trivia[]
- In the English localized version, Aloysius abusive nature is censored much more.
- In the official novelization, he plays a larger role in the Official Novelization, being the sole reason Ness's dad is absent in the first place as well as following Porky even after he abandons Geldegarde Monotoli. Aloysius ends up starving himself to death in the Deep Darkness as a result of his own greed and desire for money. This is later undone at the end of the story where his fate instead ends up being that he's arrested for embezzlement.
