~ Alpha as he attempts to attack Dug in front of the other dogs. |
Alpha is the secondary antagonist of Pixar's 10th full-length animated feature film Up, the main antagonist of the short film Dug's Special Mission, and a minor character in the short film Dug Days: Carl's Date.
He is a sadistic and vicious Doberman Pinscher who served as the former second-in-command of Charles F. Muntz and the former leader of a pack of dogs, often accompanied by his personal henchmen Beta and Gamma. He is also Dug's former arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Bob Peterson, who also played Chick Hicks in Cars 3.
Biography[]
Up[]
Alpha is a Doberman Pinscher owned by Charles F. Muntz. He is the leader of a pack of dogs owned by Muntz and is usually found with Beta and Gamma, his lieutenants. Like Dug, he has a collar that allows him to talk, but a collar malfunction makes him sound as if he'd been inhaling helium, giving him a sped up chipmunk voice. The real voice for Alpha's translator chip (after Muntz fixes his collar) is a deep, evil voice. Russell says he liked his other voice.
In the background, he can be seen panting with happiness once Charles says "treat" to Carl and Russell.
Alpha has a very condescending, egotistical, and proud disposition, and looks down on all the other dogs in the pack. When Dug fails to bring Kevin (the bird) to Alpha, he puts Dug in the "Cone of Shame." In the climax of the film, Alpha clashes with Dug inside the airship until Dug finally defeats Alpha by trapping him under the helm and sticking a conical airship instrument housing over the Doberman's head as the "Cone of Shame". Alpha accidentally breaks his collar, making his voice high-pitched again, which causes the other dogs to ridicule him and bestow the "Alpha" title upon Dug. Following his defeat, he is seen at Russell's promotion ceremony in the film's closing scenes, still wearing the "Cone of Shame". The ending credits suggest he becomes a pet of one of the residents at the Shady Oaks Retirement Home.
Dug's Special Mission[]
Alpha, Beta and Gamma are chasing Kevin when Dug accidentally trips them, causing them to lose the bird. Alpha tells Dug to "watch the bird's favorite rock and tell them if it moves." Dug accidentally knocks the large rock over, almost squashing Alpha and the rest of the pack. Alpha then tells him to sit in the bird's 'favorite hole' and, while giving a speech to his pack-mates, gets buried by Dug, who sank through the hole (which was filled with quicksand). Alpha is shown getting beat up several more times until he calls "master" to tell him that Dug caused them to lose the bird, and that he is a bad dog.
Carl's Date[]
Alpha (now known as Beta) is heard through the phone talking to Dug about his new owner and how he is happy with his new home.

Quotes[]
“ | Gamma: Oh! Here it is! I-I picked up the bird's scent! Beta: Wait a minute, wait a minute! What is this? ... Chocolate. I smell chocolate. Gamma: I'm getting prunes and denture cream! Who are they?! Beta: Oh, man, Master will not be pleased. We better tell him someone took the bird, right, Alpha? Alpha: (squeaky voice) No. Soon enough, the bird will be ours yet again. Find the scent, my compadres, and you two shall have much rewarding from Master for the toil factor you wage. |

Gamma! Mayhaps you desire to- Squirrel! Mayhaps you desire to challenge the ranking that I have been assigned by my strength and cunning. Beta: No, no, no. But maybe Dug would. You might wanna ask him. Gamma: Yeah, I wonder if he found the bird on his "very special mission". Alpha: Do not mention Dug to me at this time. His fool's errand will keep him most occupied. Most occupied indeed. (Laughs evilly) Do you not agree with that which I am saying to you now? Beta: Sure, but... the second Master finds out you sent Dug out by himself, none of us will get a treat. Alpha: You are wise, my trusted lieutenant. |

Dug: (Whispering) I am here with the bird, and I will bring it back, and then you will like me. Oop, gotta go. Russell: Hey, Dug, who're you talking to? (The transmission cuts off) Alpha: No, wait! WAIT! Beta: What's Dug doing?! Gamma: What's he doing with that small mailman?! Beta: Where are they?! Alpha: (He turns on the map on Beta's collar and pinpoints Dug's location.) There he is. Come on! |

Trivia[]
- The howling wolf in Day & Night is actually a modified version of Alpha, similar to how background humans in Pixar films are created from a "Universal Man" as a base.
- Alpha is the eighth Pixar villain to be physically fought.
- It should be noted that Alpha is the character's rank in the pack, rather than his name, as Dug became the new Alpha after defeating him. Thus, the real name of Alpha is unknown.
- Alpha is a Greek letter of the alphabet, along with Beta and Gamma.
- Alpha seems to hate it when others say that his voice is weird, due to his broken collar which makes him sound like a chipmunk.
- Alpha serves as a dark reflection to Dug, representing what he would've become if he wasn't able to overcome his dedication of hunting down Kevin for Muntz. He also demonstrates what would happen to Dug if he hadn't met Carl and Russell and became friends with them.
