~ Alton to Masoj Hun'ett. |
Alton Devir is a minor antagonist in The Legend of Drizzt, serving as a supporting antagonist of The Dark Elf Trilogy. He was a member of drow House DeVir before that house was wiped out by House Do'Urden in a bid for power. Alton was away at the Sorcere learning magic when his one of his superiors, Gelroos Hun'ett, who was working for the Do'Urdens tried to kill him. Alton survived by helping kill and disguising as Gelroos, so that House Do"urden couldn't kill him. Along with Masoj Hun'ett, he set out to destroy House Do'Urden for vengeance.
Appearance[]
Before taking on the mantle of Faceless One, Alton was a fairly average looking drow with short hair and a long wizard cloak. After Masoj poured acid on his face to disguise him, he looked about how you would expect him to, with no skin, hair, or nose. He generally wore his hood to obscure his face somewhat.
Personality[]
Before the death of his family, Alton was an ambitious and book-smart individual, if not the too cunning. He was taken by surprise by the Faceless One, and during the ensuing battle made several choices which would have resulted in his death if it weren't for Masoj. Nevertheless, he was a fairly high-ranking wizard in the Sorcere.
After the fall of House DeVir, Alton sunk into depression, abandoning all his ambitions but one: vengeance on the house that had destroyed his. He dedicated every moment of the day to this goal, caring more about it than his own life. He would constantly make impulsive decisions, such as summoning a s soul from hell or openly attacking a student in the spirit of revenge, which usually ended poorly for him. He seemed to be constantly blinded by anger and desperation, so that he had trouble acting intelligently or rationally.
Synopsis[]
Before the Fall of Devir[]
Alton was born to Ginafae Devir of House DeVir, the fourth house of the drow city of Menzoberranzan. At some point, he was sent to the Sorcere to train as a wizard.
One day, he was invited to the chambers of Faceless One, an Archmage of the Sorcere, and the old mage tried to kill him. After a long battle during which Alton enraged the Faceless One by destroying his mirror, the young DeVir ended up trapped in a magical web. The Faceless One revealed to him that a rival house had hired him to murder Alton so to completely wipe out House DeVir, but refused to elaborate on who that rival house was.
Before The Faceless One could kill Alton, he was killed by his apprentice, Masoj Hun'ett. Masoj explained how he had hated his mentor and had killed him as vengeance for mistreating him. He then explained how he needed to kill Alton so that there would be no witnesses. However, Alton convinced him not to by offering to pretend to be the Faceless One by pouring acid on his face, to mimic the old mage's facelessness. From there, he promised to give Masoj perks and bonuses as archmage of the Sorcere. He also hoped to discover which house had destroyed his. Masoj agreed to the deal and poured the acid on Alton's face.
As the Faceless One[]
Alton spent the next few years trying to keep his identity secret while trying to discover which house had destroyed his with Masoj's help. One day, he tried to temporarily drag his mother's soul out of the afterlife so that he could ask her. After a confusing and unhelpful conversation with his mother, one of the demonic servants of Lolth appeared and scolded him for interrupting Ginafae's private hell. As punishment, he filled the room with thousands of spiders. In a fit of fear and anger, Alton cast a fire ball, that killed the spiders, but also nearly killed him and Masoj as well, permanently burning of the latter's eyebrows.
One day, Alton was met in his office by SiNafay Hun'ett, Masoj's mother. She offered him an ointment that would heal his face, and also revealed that the previous Faceless on had been her son: Gelroos Hun'ett. Knowing that his face being healed would reveal his identity, Alton confessed everything to her, seeing no other way out of the predicament. However, SiNafay then revealed that Masoj had already revealed everything, and that she did not care about Gelroos's death. She told Alton that it was House Do'Urden who had wiped out DeVir, and offered to help him keep his cover and get his revenge, if he joined her house and followed her orders. Alton agreed to her deal.
A few days later, SiNafay brought Alton before the High Council of Menzoberranzan, and accused House Do'Urden of wiping out House DeVir. However, Matron Baenre, leader of the council told them that it had been too long since the crime had been committed for the perpetrators to face any punishment, much to Alton's anger. House Hun'ett decided to resort to more subtle way of destroying House Do'Urden.
One day, Drizzt Do'Urden, the youngest child of House Do'Urden, began attending the Sorcere, and Alton demanded to kill him as vengeance for the death of his family. However, SiNafay and Masoj forbade him from doing that, since the death of one child wouldn't help their cause and would in fact give away their plans to House Do'Urden. Alton agreed to wait, but couldn't help himself, and one day invited Drizzt to his office, before trying to kill him with magical lightning. Masoj rushed into the room before he could murder the student and told Drizzt that it was just a test. After escorting the boy from the room, Masoj scolded Alton for nearly revealing their plans to their enemies.
Masoj proved himself to be a hypocrite one night, when he tried to kill Drizzt outside of the city, simply because he found the boy irritating. Alton arrived to help his associate but was killed by Drizzt when the boy destroyed a magical wand he was using, prompting it to ignite. Alton was blown to little pieces, and never got his revenge.
Powers and Abilities[]
Alton was a proficient magic user, and grew more skilled over the years, to the point of rivaling his predecessor, Gelroos. In particular, he used a metal wand that shot lightning bolts.
Trivia[]
- Alton once mused that after he died someone else would take up the mantle of Faceless One, like he had with Gelroos. This was proved false, since when he died, the title of Faceless One died with him.
