The Alvida Pirates (アルビダ海賊団 Arubida Kaizokudan) are major antagonists during the Romance Dawn Arc in the One Piece franchise. They were a pirate crew led by Alvida who was dedicated to committing looting in the East Blue. They are the first pirate crew to appear in the anime adaptation.
History[]
The Alvida Pirates are a pirate crew originating from the East Blue, formerly led by Captain Alvida. They were among the active pirate groups during the early period when Monkey D. Luffy began his journey to find the One Piece. The crew operated primarily along trade and transport routes in the East Blue, targeting small merchant vessels and defenseless ships for plunder.
Captain Alvida, known at the time as the "Iron Mace" for her weapon of choice and fearsome temper, ruled the crew with an iron fist. Her subordinates feared her greatly and maintained her favor through constant flattery, particularly with regards to her appearance. The crew's internal discipline was driven largely by this fear, rather than admiration or respect.
Among her known subordinates were Heppoko, Peppoko, and Poppoko—a trio often deployed for routine enforcement aboard the ship—as well as several unnamed crewmen responsible for ship operations and combat support. The crew also included Koby, a young boy who had been taken hostage and forced to work as a chore boy under harsh conditions.
The Alvida Pirates' most notable encounter occurred when they discovered a large barrel adrift at sea, which they brought aboard believing it to contain sake. Instead, the barrel contained Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who had recently gained the powers of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that granted him rubber-like elasticity. After a brief confrontation in which Luffy demonstrated his abilities and challenged the captain's authority, Alvida was defeated and sent flying with a single punch.
Following her defeat, the crew was left demoralized and disorganized. Luffy demanded that they provide a boat for Koby to escape, and the crew complied. After this incident, the Alvida Pirates effectively ceased to operate under their original form.
Subsequently, Alvida herself reappeared with a drastically different appearance, having consumed the Sube Sube no Mi, which gave her a smooth, slippery body and caused her to lose all excess weight. She later allied with Buggy the Clown and became co-captain of the Buggy and Alvida Alliance (Bagī to Arubida Gōdō Kaizokudan), abandoning her former crew.
The current status of the original Alvida Pirates is unknown. It is assumed that the remaining crew either disbanded or faded into obscurity after Alvida's departure. No further official reports of their activity have been recorded since their initial encounter with Luffy and Koby.
