The Amaterasu Corporation are the main antagonists of the 2023 adventure game, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.
It is a corporation managed by Makoto Kagutsuchi with Yomi Hellsmile serving as its law enforcement with the Peacekeepers. By some apparent means, the company took control of Kanai Ward three years ago, which is also when the rainfall started, and the city became isolated at the same time, with it supposedly conspiring with the Unified Government to achieve these ends. How the corporation achieved this is out of the citizens' knowledge and happened completely behind the scenes, with no one knowing how.
Thanks to its successes, it now owns Kanai Ward and its power over the citizens causes the city to become completely dystopian. Even though they control Kanai Ward and its law enforcement is no different than a dictatorship, by contrast, the citizens themselves seem to be completely calm about the fact that a whole corporation is in control of their lives thanks to the scheming of the aforementioned duo and the conspiracies they partook in to achieve their goals.
Despite Makoto supremely managing the corporation as its CEO, Yomi is the primary physical threat to Kanai Ward's conditions and citizens as a whole, being the psychopathic leader of the corrupt Peacekeepers and using his power to twist the truth in Amaterasu Corporation's favor for his own ends, not caring whose life is ruined as a result of his abusive behavior.

Amaterasu Corporation conspired with the Unified Government ten years ago as part of a scheme to create an army of immortal homunculi, having started out as no more than a normal corporation that was headquartered in Kanai Ward. The two organizations set up research facilities to conduct research on homunculi and were made to compete with one another. Sometime after they were hired, Yomi Hellsmile and Dr. Huesca, the Peacekeepers director and head researcher, conspired together to sell trade secrets to other enterprises so that they could profit from their illegal deals, allowing the company to grow in success. Yomi hired his advisor and hitman to shoot anyone who dared to accuse him of these conspiracies in order to silence them before they could reveal any incriminating information, likely including Nocturnal Detective Agency director Yakou Furio's wife and one of the company researchers as one of the targets. These conspiracies would affect Yakou's lifestyle and force him into using other means to live in Kanai Ward.
Three years ago, after the Unified Government created Makoto Kagutsuchi using DNA from Number One of the World Detective Organization, copying Number One's Forensic Forte: Coalescence in the process, Yomi enforced Kanai Ward's population to have their blood sampled to use as DNA for Amaterasu Corporation's experiment to rival the UG's success, falsifying it as a blood test for a disease. This research project would be dubbed Project: Homunculus. The homunculi would be created in a restricted area that was set up by the doctor in an abandoned village. The doctor attempted to adjust the DNA of the homunculi when one of them died from exposure to sunlight. However, this resulted in the homunculi turning into flesh-hungry beasts when making contact with sunlight instead, dubbing them "defective". All of the homunculi that were created by the doctor would free themselves from the lab they were created in and kill everyone in Kanai Ward, swapping places with them in the process. Some of the original residents, like Kurumi Wendy's grandfather, would not have a replacement for them upon being killed.
Makoto entered Kanai Ward around this period and created a rain cloud generator out of the city's bath house to return the homunculi to normal, covering the city in eternal rainfall. Following this, he would blackmail the UG with their homunculus research in order for the city to be isolated, earning him the position of CEO from his predecessor, and freeze Dr. Huesca's homunculus research to prevent the homunculi from being created any further, sealing off the testing area in the process. Having secured his position as CEO, Makoto would also kidnap multiple criminals on a global scale and process them into meat buns for the residents to unwittingly eat as a means for them to survive using his identity as Number One's homunculus to locate them using the World Detective Organization. While conducting these schemes over the course of three years, Makoto allowed Yomi to continue oppressing Kanai Ward's citizens using his position as Peacekeepers director so that any defective homunculi would be transported to the abandoned village in the restricted area, where they would revive as zombies, concealing their true identities.

However, despite this causing harm to the citizens, Makoto didn't concern himself with Yomi's practices until he and Dr. Huesca conspired together to leak homunculus information to the world, which would prompt the UG to act on their initial plan to kill the homunculi instead. Refusing to allow this to happen, Makoto hired Master Detectives of the World Detective Organization to investigate Kanai Ward, luring them over with false mysteries, so he could use them to eliminate the two agents. The organization's leader and the original Number One, knowing that his clone had turned to evil, joined in with this investigation under the false identity of "Yuma Kokohead", using the death god Shinigami to erase his memories of his true self in the process.
Yomi ordered his hitman to kill anyone entering Kanai Ward to prevent them from investigating because of the city's isolation, leaving behind the original Number One, Halara Nightmare, Desuhiko Thunderbolt, Fubuki Clockford, and Vivia Twilight, who would be under Yakou's direction. Following Vivia's arrival, Yakou would be sent an anonymous letter instigating him to murder Dr. Huesca by Yomi, doing so by telling Yakou that the doctor was responsible for his wife's death as a result of her leaking Yomi's aforementioned conspiracy to illegally sell technology for profit, who wanted the doctor eliminated to prevent him from successfully escaping Kanai Ward and betraying his collaboration with Yomi.
The detectives entered Amaterasu Corporation HQ after solving several cases around Kanai Ward while being opposed by Swank Catsonell, Seth Burroughs, Martina Electro, Guillaume Hall, and Dominic Fulltank in an attempt to discover the truth on homunculus research, but were instead distracted by the possibility of Fink the Slaughter Artist, a local hitman-for-hire, being present in the lab at the time with the intent to kill Dr. Huesca, the head researcher of the company. Yakou would use Fink as part of his plot to murder Dr. Huesca, concealing his murder by framing Fink as the culprit using a similar murder weapon. In reality, however, Fink was hired by Makoto as part of his own scheme. Yomi used the murder as an excuse to arrest the detectives and continuously attack them while in Amaterasu Corporation. When he encountered Number One and Vivia investigating the doctor's computer for information, he threatened to shoot them to death. The threat was interrupted by Makoto appearing and Martina returning after Yomi attempted to execute her, using incriminating evidence of his deals with Dr. Huesca to have him eliminated from his position, which was precisely what Makoto wanted to happen.
While concealing his true intentions, Makoto gave Number One a box as a "gift", which turned out to be a smoke box that he used to knock out the detectives while showing them fake footage of the organization being blown up in a terror attack. While the detectives were unconscious, he would take the majority to his penthouse in Kanai Tower while Number One and Kurumi were taken to the restricted area, where Makoto led them around to discover the truth behind Kanai Ward. Upon Number One's arrival at the rain cloud generator, Makoto threatened Number One into opening up a portal to the Mystery Labyrinth after activating his Forensic Forte: Coalescence by holding him at gunpoint, allowing him to follow Number One inside and battle him, forcing him to expose Makoto's identity at the same time.
Makoto would reveal his true goal of eliminating Number One of the World Detective Organization to the original Number One once their identities were exposed, using the Mystery Labyrinth to do so, so he could take control of the organization for himself and keep Kanai Ward protected from the world forever. Number One would refuse to listen to Makoto's twisted logic and instead expose the truth behind his actions, encouraging Makoto to listen to a more ethical approach and reveal the truth to the citizens instead, which would also solve the Mystery Labyrinth externally. Makoto would follow through with this reasoning and reveal the truth of Kanai Ward to the residents to allow them to decide how to resolve their issues, even reversing all of his crimes and Kanai Ward's isolation to find a solution, even permitting them to freely roam around again. Kurumi would request Makoto for her to leave Kanai Ward and search for Number One again, a request that he would grant her. At the time the Master Detectives leave upon solving Kanai Ward's mystery, Kurumi would do the same.

- In Chapter 5, upon learning that Makoto became the CEO of Amaterasu Corporation by stopping the Unified Government from occupying Kanai Ward and combining it with the knowledge that Yomi Hellsmile was intending to take the position for himself, Shinigami comments that Yomi running the city would've been a worse outcome compared to Makoto taking charge instead. However, this wouldn't be the case as Yomi's inherent lack of mercy would ironically have been a better outcome. Makoto subjects the citizens of Kanai Ward to constant control over their lives as defective homunculi and decides to keep them alive, living under constant rainfall unaware of who they are, being tricked into eating flesh-filled meat buns to survive and living in a state of isolation. The reason this is torturous for the residents to begin with is because they know they're trapped and unaware of what Makoto is actually doing to them, but Makoto refuses to improve the conditions of the city because he's an extremist with standards. Yomi's merciless approach to Kanai Ward would actually have been a better outcome because he'd never subject the citizens to this, mostly because he isn't aware they're all the defective homunculi he and Dr. Huesca created three years ago including him, and would kill them at any opportunity he would get rather than subject them to something like that purely because he's not a self-righteous extremist willing to keep them in the dark about extreme conditional changes to the city like Makoto, but rather a delusional psychopath who is much more upfront about him having the personality of a villainous control freak.
- Though the corporation and its leaders, Makoto Kagutsuchi and Yomi Hellsmile, are depicted in a deservedly negative light during the plot and the company's actions appropriately carry a haunting atmosphere with them, mostly as a result of the blatant ignorance towards Kanai Ward's conditions, Amaterasu Corporation itself alongside the aforementioned duo are notably rather stereotypical, at least on the surface, with their corruption stemming entirely from unethical research and experimentation as a result of governmental collaboration, a plot point that has undoubtedly been used before with antagonistic corporations. Despite that, the corporation's villainy does not lack charm and never appears tedious as the villains are powerful and effortless manipulators who are worth watching act in corrupt ways, even if it uses something as overused as research for a plot point regarding said villainy.
