The Amaterasu Corporation are the main antagonists of Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.
It is a corporation managed by Makoto Kagutsuchi with Yomi Hellsmile serving as its law enforcement with the Peacekeepers. By some apparent means, the company took control of Kanai Ward three years ago, which is also when the rainfall started, and the city became isolated at the same time, with it supposedly conspiring with the Unified Government to achieve these ends. How the corporation achieved this is out of the citizens' knowledge and happened completely behind the scenes, with no one knowing how. Thanks to its successes, it now owns Kanai Ward and its power over the citizens causes the city to become completely dystopian. Despite the fact that they control Kanai Ward and its law enforcement is no different than a dictatorship, by contrast, the citizens themselves seem to be completely calm about the fact that a whole corporation is in control of their lives thanks to the scheming of the aforementioned duo and the conspiracies they partook in to achieve their goals.
Despite Makoto supremely managing the corporation as its CEO, Yomi is the primary physical threat to Kanai Ward's conditions and citizens as a whole, being the psychopathic leader of the corrupt Peacekeepers and using his power to twist the truth in Amaterasu Corporation's favor for his own ends, not caring whose life is ruined as a result of his abusive behavior.
History[]
The company was initially small and there is little known about when it first started. When Yomi Hellsmile initiated his rise to power can be considered the start of its development. Yearning for power, five years ago, he and Dr. Huesca colluded with one another so they could sell trade secrets to other national enterprises and with the money earned from it, Yomi would bribe other factions to follow his bidding and secure his position of power over others. This would eventually turn the city into a land of free crime, eventually turning the Peacekeepers into ruthless criminals themselves, who go as far as masterminding it like crime lords, and intimidate those who oppose them into submission in order to stay in power. It is unknown when or how the Amaterasu Corporation as a whole initially achieved its consumption of Kanai Ward. The Peacekeepers took the city over once Yomi used these means to achieve power, which managed to affect Nocturnal Detective Agency director Yakou Furio’s life and lead him into a downward spiral until he became the jaded person he is now. Before Makoto's entry into the city, Yomi used his advisor to kill anyone who would oppose him and threaten to expose his conspiracy with Dr. Huesca in order to secure his position.
Three years ago, to compete with the Unified Government after being hired for homunculus research, Dr. Huesca decided to conduct his own research to catch up after the Unified Government created a perfect homunculus, in the form of Makoto Kagutsuchi, using DNA from Number One of the World Detective Organization. He set up a restricted area to conduct his research in secret, and the Peacekeepers ordered the citizens’ blood to be sampled so they could be used as test subjects with their DNA, including those who worked for the Amaterasu Corporation. Due to rushing the experiment and adjusting the genetic makeup of the homunculi when one of the homunculi died after being subjected to sunlight, he ended up creating predatory homunculi that would turn to mindless violence upon being subjected to UV light, all of which killed all of Kanai Ward’s human residents and replaced them with their homunculus clones, with no memory of their massacre and yet perfect memories of the events before their blood was extracted, making them think they were still their original counterparts.
Upon entering into Kanai Ward, as Number One’s homunculus, Makoto Kagutsuchi remedied the situation by covering up the case and reverting everything back to normal while the homunculi remained unaware of their true selves. The current CEO of the company, whom Makoto provided for at the time, delegated his position to Makoto, and Makoto proved to be much more competent as a leader, allowing the company to operate much more successfully than before. Makoto promptly used this power to shut down the homunculus research, with the power to shut down Yomi and Dr. Huesca and their protests not to do so. Makoto also blackmailed the Unified Government in order to isolate the city, which is how he became the CEO thanks to preventing them from destroying the corporation, and designed a cloud machine to cover Kanai Ward in a cage of rain and block out the sunlight, therefore pacifying the defective homunculi, and any homunculi that were killed were sent to the now-abandoned village in Kanai Ward's restricted area. He also masterminded a mass kidnapping of death row inmates around the world, where he designed a factory specifically to mass-produce them into meat buns to keep Kanai Ward's homunculi sustained, using his power as Number One's homunculus to send them over to it, where he would have them killed and processed and fed to the unwitting residents. Sometime after Makoto’s rise to power, Yomi began to oppose Makoto, urging Makoto to use his power as Number One’s homunculus to send Master Detectives to Kanai Ward to serve as Yomi’s opposition. Yomi also assassinated the former CEO out of spite, as Yomi was intended to be given the position of CEO until Makoto intervened.
Upon observing Yomi's continued corruption, Makoto felt dispirited by the state of Kanai Ward under his rule and plotted against him much more directly, which would cause a rift between the two of them. He also tried to cover up his own trickery however he possibly could, such as rumouring that the rain changed the residents' bodies (to hide the fact that the blood of homunculi is pink than red), and that corpses would rot due to the humidity from the rain his machine was producing, unwittingly tricking Yomi and his men into hiding the truth of the presence of homunculi in Kanai Ward for him. Makoto chose to live in Kanai Tower, the biggest building in the city, while staying in Kanai Ward, isolating himself from the rest of the city for the ongoing years and rarely walking around. He also hired servants to work for him, of whom were unrelated to Yomi, and set up automated security around his home base, which he could disable on command.
Makoto used his power as Number One's homunculus to send Master Detectives of the World Detective Organization to Kanai Ward, intending to pit them against Yomi and use them to expose Yomi's corruption, and overtake Kanai Ward as the sole ruler. The detectives taking the bait, Yomi masterminded the massacre of countless detectives, leaving behind five survivors (Yuma/the original Number One that Makoto is based on, Halara Nightmare, Desuhiko Thunderbolt, Fubuki Clockford, and Vivia Twilight), all of whom opposed Yomi in multiple cases as Makoto had planned with Shinigami aiding them in this and Makoto's goal. All of them did so while oblivious to the fact that every resident was a homunculus of their original counterpart, and not their original human selves. However, just after Vivia's arrival, Yomi sent Yakou Furio, their leader, an anonymous letter detailing how Amaterasu's head researcher, Dr. Huesca, is responsible for the death of his wife four years ago to instigate him to murder the doctor as a counterattack for his betrayal of Yomi six months ago (that is, in spite of Yomi dragging Huesca into his schemes first), with Yakou unaware that he is a pawn for Yomi's scheme. Sometime before the detectives found out about the secret lab within Amaterasu Corporation, Makoto covertly introduced Yakou to local assassin-for-hire Fink the Slaughter Artist as part of the overarching plan to kill Dr. Huesca, giving Makoto the opening for him to take down Yomi by distracting him with the eventual incident regarding the assassin in the research lab.
With Makoto's eventual success in taking him down following Dr. Huesca's murder by Yakou Furio's hands, he lured Yuma/Number One into a trap so he could make him disappear without a trace and take his place in the WDO, therefore controlling Amaterasu Corporation alongside it. However, upon being convinced to tell the residents they're defective homunculi alongside all of his other crimes done for their sake, Makoto settled for the alternative instead. This involved negotiating with the Unified Government to send imports to Kanai Ward to help the homunculi, and provide the homunculi a more peaceful place to live in, free from Yomi's former tyranny. The detectives also made a treaty with Makoto and decided they could visit Kanai Ward again in the event of a mystery, and Makoto opened up the city's borders, allowing the homunculi to roam outside of Kanai Ward.
Members[]
- Makoto Kagutsuchi - The anti-villainous CEO of Amaterasu Corporation. Makoto is the current leader of the company, and is rivalling with the Peacekeepers. He shows contempt for the previous apathy shown from the corporation before taking his place, aiming to get rid of Yomi, and his decision to take charge allowed the company to be successful. Due to Kanai Ward’s current population consisting of defective homunculi created by head researcher Dr. Huesca three years ago, Makoto aims to protect the homunculi from the Unified Government by any means necessary, including pretending to be his original counterpart as a clone of Number One of the World Detective Organization as part of a conspiracy to kidnap and mass-produce death row inmates into meat buns for the homunculi to sustain themselves on, and abuses his power to cover up the truth of the residents’ identities, as they are unaware they are just homunculus clones of their original counterparts instead. The Master Detectives were sent to Kanai Ward because Makoto brought them there as part of his conspiracy to expose Yomi of his corruption, and makes no hesitation in disposing of them once they accomplish this goal in his lust for power over the city. He is the main antagonist of Chapter 5, tricking Yuma into trapping himself in the Mystery Labyrinth in order to cover up his crimes and continue keeping Kanai Ward a secret from the world.
- Amaterasu Peacekeepers - The Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers are a security firm made to keep the citizens in line after Kanai Ward was overtaken by the Amaterasu Corporation, but are no longer aiming to do this, having remained in power despite there no longer being a need for them and believing any opposition to their rule is an evil that needs to be eliminated. They are disbanded by Makoto at the end of Chapter 4 when he finds evidence of the corruption of their leader, Yomi.
- Yomi Hellsmile - The director of the Peacekeepers. Yomi is the leader and the source of the majority of the city’s corruption, alongside the reason for Kanai Ward being a dystopia to live in as a result of his unrestrained cruelty towards others and delusional belief that he is "a paragon of justice”. His collaboration with head researcher Dr. Huesca allowed Yomi to control other factions of the corporation into doing his bidding, allowing him to secure his position and cover up all of his crimes, while also manipulating Kanai Ward’s residents into submitting to his will. He is the main antagonist of Chapter 4, manipulating Yakou Furio into killing Huesca so he can lead the detectives into a trap and kill them all at once while framing them for the murder.
- Martina Electro - The vice director of the Peacekeepers. She is Yomi’s rumored mistress and devoted second-in-command to his power, willingly submitting to Yomi and catering to his belief that he is Kanai Ward’s hero. She is the main antagonist of Chapter 2, keeping Yuma and Desuhiko from discovering the true culprits of the Aetheria Academy case and their motives while being unaware of truth herself. After being sent to execution by Yomi for her failure to capture the protagonists in Chapter 2, she is saved by Makoto, inspiring her to reform and send Yomi to be arrested for his corruption.
- Swank Catsonell - The first Peacekeeper boss that Yuma encounters upon arriving in Kanai Ward, Swank tries to frame Yuma for the Amaterasu Express Massacre in Chapter 0 to cover for the true culprit and have him arrested as a survivor.
- Seth Burroughs - The Section Chief of Investigation for the Peacekeepers, and the first Peacekeeper that Yuma encounters during his investigation of Kanai Ward, Seth frames Kanai Ward’s local watchmaker as the Nail Man to cover for the priest to prevent his arrest after Yomi ordered him to take bribes from the church as a source of income for the Peacekeepers as the main antagonist of Chapter 1.
- Guillaume Hall - The Counterterrorism Squad Leader for the Peacekeepers. Always accompanied by Dominic, who acts as her muscle. Guillaume is a sadistic, falsely charming individual who takes pleasure in exerting her power over those she deems below her, in a similar fashion to Yomi. She is the one of the two main antagonists of Chapter 3 alongside Dominic, incriminating Yuma of Shachi’s murder after Icardi frames him as a terrorist and relentlessly chasing him down so she can execute him, while distracted from Icardi’s plot to flood the city and rob the bank to fund his escape from Kanai Ward. She personally sends the Peacekeepers to dismantle the Resistance against Amaterasu Corporation, which Icardi takes advantage of to kill his target.
- Dominic Fulltank - Guillaume’s muscle and one of the two main antagonists of Chapter 3 alongside Guillaume, Dominic acts as her muscle and follows any orders she gives him.
- Dr. Huesca - The head researcher of Amaterasu Corporation. Five years ago, he and Yomi colluded to sell trade secrets to other enterprises in order to aid in Yomi’s rise to power. However, six months ago, Huesca betrayed Yomi and intended to flee the company, intending to take his research with him and fake his death using an unwitting victim of his security system. He is promptly killed by Yakou Furio as Chapter 4’s victim after Yomi and Makoto manipulate Yakou into committing the misdeed.
- Fake Zilch Alexander - The secondary antagonist of Chapter 0, the fake Zilch Alexander is an assassin-for-hire sent by the Peacekeepers to eliminate any Master Detectives entering Kanai Ward, serving as the culprit of the Amaterasu Express Massacre. He killed the real Zilch and replaced him to impersonate him, and then knocked the detectives unconscious, then set them alight to kill them when vulnerable, leaving Yuma alive as a patsy. His soul is reaped by Yuma and Shinigami at the end of Chapter 0 once he is exposed of his crimes in the Mystery Labyrinth. He returns in Chapter 5 as a zombified homunculus to tell Yuma of his escapades as Yomi’s assassin-for-hire and the sadistic glee he took in killing anyone who opposed him.
- Akira - A robot researcher who created Ama-Pal, a sturdy toy robot for children to play with. His invention is used in Chapter 4 to Yakou Furio’s advantage as the case’s culprit, using it to sneak into Dr. Huesca’s critical lab and kill him.
Former[]
- Former Amaterasu CEO - Prior to the Master Detectives arriving at Kanai Ward, the company's former CEO delegated his position to Makoto after the latter halted the Unified Government's plan to destroy Kanai Ward, and the Amaterasu Corporation along with it. After being turned into a homunculus, out of spite, the former CEO was assassinated and sent to Dr. Huesca's homunculus testing site by Makoto, and Makoto regularly visited him. The former CEO was proud of how the company progressed with Makoto in charge, though he was clearly much more concerned about the company's profits than Yomi's blatant corruption, as he was willing to put Yomi in charge instead of someone more responsible in a misguided attempt at keeping the company afloat.

Trivia[]
- Though the corporation and its leaders, Makoto Kagutsuchi and Yomi Hellsmile, are depicted in a deservedly negative light during the plot and the company's actions appropriately carry a haunting atmosphere with them, mostly as a result of the blatant ignorance towards Kanai Ward's conditions, Amaterasu Corporation itself alongside the aforementioned duo are notably rather stereotypical, at least on the surface, with their corruption stemming entirely from unethical research and experimentation as a result of governmental collaboration, a plot point that has undoubtedly been used before with antagonistic corporations. Despite that, the corporation's villainy does not lack charm and never appears tedious as the villains are powerful and effortless manipulators who are worth watching act in corrupt ways, even if it uses something as overused as research for a plot point regarding said villainy.
