Amber Freeman is the secondary antagonist of the 2022 slasher film Scream, the fifth installment of the franchise of the same name.

She is Tara Carpenter's former best friend-turned-second arch-nemesis and Richie Kirsch's accomplice and secret girlfriend. She became obsessed with the original Stab film after moving into Stu Macher's former house, but was not fond of the sequels. After being disgusted with Stab 8, simply known as Stab, she met Richie on a Stab subreddit where they devised a plan to create a "requel" to the original Stab, using the Carpenter Sisters as the basis for the movie (Tara as the victim, and Sam as the villain). On the 25th anniversary of the original 1996 Woodsboro Murders, they put their plan into motion and lure Sam back to Woodsboro by targeting Tara.

Amber committed most of the attacks and murders in the movie, including killing legacy characters like Sheriff Judy Hicks and Dewey Riley. Because of this, she became the arch-nemesis of the latter's ex-wife Gale Weathers, who in revenge, with help from Sidney Prescott, left her for dead by lighting her on fire with the stove in her house. She is later shot in the head by Tara once Amber manages to put the fire out.

She was portrayed by Mikey Madison, who also played Susan "Sadie" Atkins in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. While in-disguise, she is voiced by Roger L. Jackson. In-costume scenes as Ghostface were portrayed by Keith Ward and Paul Burke.

Biography[]

Background[]

At some point, Amber's parents bought Stu Macher's old house at 261 Turner Lane and after researching the history behind it, Amber became a fan of the original Stab (1997), featuring Vince Vaughn as Stu, the former resident of her home, and the Ghostface killings sprees, She essentially became a fanatic. She was angry with the sequels, particularly the eighth film, which she deemed to be inferior quality. She later recalls to Sidney Prescott that the problem with the Stab franchise is "no bad guy to keep coming back". In Woodsboro High, Amber formed a close friendship with Tara Carpenter. Because of Christina Carpenter, her mother's tendency to get drunk, she discovered that Tara's sister, Samantha was the illegitimate daughter of Billy Loomis, the original Woodsboro killer and mastermind (although it was actually Roman Bridger who orchestrated these events).

When Stab 8 (2021) was released, Amber, like many of the fans, were disappointed, not only because it was simply called Stab, but there was a poor storyline that didn't follow the path of the Stab movies' meta slasher whodunit narrative and there was no Sidney Prescott character either. The fans became so mad that they were accused of being a "toxic" fandom. After meeting fellow fan, Richie Kirsch, on a Stab subreddit, they decided to appease the fandom by creating a "requel" to Stab 8 — essentially a reboot of Stab but also a sequel — which included new characters as well as bringing back the legacy characters. The pair devised a plan and Richie approached Samantha in her new hometown where he grew close to her whilst Amber prepared to attack her sister to lure her back to town. The plan was to use Samantha as the Ghostface of their movie, given her connection to the legacy characters would bring them back, and use Tara as the basis of their movie to bring in all her friends as their new generation of victims.

Scream (2022)[]

S2022-Ghostface3

Amber as Ghostface attacks Tara.

Amber was the one who attacked Tara Carpenter during the film's opening. She later took credit for this by promising to stab "all the organs she missed last time." Richie was the one who called Tara on the phone. A pre-recorded video taken by Richie of Amber in her bedroom was sent to Tara's cellphone to trick her into thinking Amber was in danger, thus forcing her to play along. However, Amber disabled the lock system from Tara's cloned cellphone, came inside the house and attacked Tara mercilessly. Amber spared her life because the purpose of this attack was to lure Samantha, her sister and Richie's "girlfriend," back into town. Tara was sent to the hospital, but Amber managed to escape.

The following day, Sam learned that her sister had been attacked. She went to Woodsboro to be with her sister in her time of need, and Richie insisted on coming with for "moral support." Later that night, Amber was out with her friends at a bar downtown, and after they and Vince Schneider were kicked out of the bar, Amber eluded her friends and killed Vince. Shortly after this, she called Sam, and Richie in disguise attacked her at the hospital, while Amber couldn't attack her, because she was at the sheriff's station being interrogated by Sheriff Judy Hicks.

"It's an honor!" - Amber killing Dewey.

The next day, Amber joins her friends at the house of Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin where they meet Dewey Riley, who is helping Sam and Richie solve the new murders. Amber and Richie then went to the hospital after the killings of Sheriff Judy Hicks and her son, Wes. Amber kills Deputy Clay, who was guarding Tara in the hospital and again attacks Tara, but Richie arrives and pretends to save her. Amber is then shot at by Dewey Riley, however she was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time. Sam, Tara and Richie leave to safety, and Dewey returns to finish the job. When Dewey tried to shoot Amber in the head, he was distracted by a phone call from Gale. Amber took advantage of this and, having two knives, stabbed him in the stomach and back, then pulled the knives, cutting open Dewey's stomach, back and the chest. With the vocal modifier, Amber said, "It's an honor!," and kicked his dying body to the ground afterwards, having Dewey finally killed by a Ghostface killer.

Tara, traumatized again, vows to leave town. That night, Amber hosts a party at her house, and she goes to grab some drinks from the basement. While she was at the party, she later attacked Chad Meeks-Martin before Richie and the Carpenter sister enters the party and he asks Mindy Meeks-Martin for some drink from the basement, just so he could dress up again as Ghostface and kill whoever's needed. Amber then calls off the party and privately talks to Tara, Sam and the others. She shoots Liv before revealing herself to be the first killer and the fearsome Ghostface along with Richie.

She is then seen fighting the protagonists near the stairs. Richie pretends to help, but as soon as he gets hold of the gun, he reveals his true motives and that, along with Amber, he was the other Ghostface. They bring Gale inside and reveal their motives to Sidney, Sam, and Gale. They also appeared that they are in a romantic relationship, since Amber was calling Richie "hon" and "baby" multiple times.

Amber goes upstairs to get Tara, but Sam had already untied her. Sam wasn't fooled by Richie tricks and untied her. Looking for Tara, the other girl takes her by surprise and initially gets the upper hand in their fight, but Amber soon gets up and knocks Tara down. She then goes into the kitchen and has a rough battle with Sidney and Gale. Sidney smashes a bottle of hand sanitizer on her head as Gale holds her back. Both of them toss Amber into a corner. Amber begins to beg both of them to show her mercy as she begins to blame the Stab SubReddit for her psychotic behavior, claiming that she was “radicalized.” However, Gale recalled how Amber murdered Dewey which made her smile with glee and began to taunt Gale about it as Gale violently punches her in the face. Amber pins Gale down to the floor by strangling her, taunting her more about how she killed Dewey and was happy that she will get the pleasure of killing her too. Gale then taunts Amber back as she head butts her and Amber is kicked against the stove as her hand lands on one of the switches. When Gale has Amber at gunpoint, she foolishly begs for her life, even giving a false apology for killing Dewey, but out of experience, Gale furiously and mercilessly shoots her to knock her back into the stove while she's covered in hand sanitizer, setting her on fire, screaming in pain, and severely burning her all over her body.

S2022-AmberDeath

After Richie is defeated and killed, she recklessly comes running into the scene with the intent of killing everyone in a desperate fit of rage. However, she is shot in the head by Tara, killing her instantly and finally putting an end to both her and Richie's pathetic lives, as well as the fifth Ghostface killing spree and finally avenging Dewey.

Scream VI (2023)[]

Richie and Amber-Scream VI

Amber is mentioned by Kirby Reed, when she and Wayne Bailey are tracking the timeline of Ghostface. However, Wayne later was revealed as one of the Ghostface killers, along with his kids, Quinn Bailey and Ethan Landry. All the trio turned out to be Richie's family, who tried to avenge Richie's death. During the revelations, Sam mentioned Amber, while insulting Richie, saying "he was a man-baby, who made his girlfriend do all the killings". These words revealed that Richie and Amber were indeed in a relationship. However, Sam's words weren't entirely true, because Amber did not do ALL the kills, but most of them under Riche's orders.

Personality[]

Harboring a warped sense of passion for the genre of gruesome Thriller films, Amber is a psychopathic, violent, and savage murderer. Although she does share such similarities with Richie, she nevertheless manages to surpassing him in savagery and cruelty, being the one to actually carry out the murders. Unlike Richie, whose delusions about saving the Stab franchise drive his actions, Amber's sadism stems from thrill-seeking and a desire for chaos. According to the directors, while Richie was the dominant figure in their duo, it was Amber who conceived the idea of the killing spree and voluntarily first hand executed most of the murders.

Despite her avid savagery, Amber's brutality is matched if not passed in measure by her immense cowardice. When confronted by Sidney and Gale, she quickly crumbles, pleading for mercy and claiming she was "radicalized." She repeats this behavior when Gale holds her at gunpoint, further exposing the extent of her cowardly side.

Despite her psychopathy, Amber displays genuine loyalty to Richie, never betraying him and genially loving him. She shares his twisted enjoyment of killing and tormenting others. However, her loyalty is exclusively reserved for Richie. She is obsessed with creating the "requel" for him, finding satisfaction in the act of killing itself.

Amber's character is a complex blend of savagery, cowardice, and obsessive loyalty. Her thrill-seeking nature makes her a more chaotic and unpredictable murderer than Richie, driven by a desire to create chaos and destruction rather than any delusions of grandeur. Her actions reveal a deep-seated need for violence and an unrelenting pursuit of her twisted goals, making her one of the most disturbing characters in the narrative.

Quotes[]

Mindy: It'll get out by the second or third killing.
Amber: Jesus, Mindy! There wasn't a first killing. Tara's alive.
Mindy: That means she could still die.
Amber: What the f-ck?
Mindy: Or the killer could come back for her.
Chad: F-ck Mindy! Come on.
Wes: I'm just telling you, arm up, okay? Pepper spray - check. Taser - check.
Amber: Girlfriend repellent - check.
~ Amber is "annoyed" about Tara's possible death, while also makes fun of Wes.
Trust me, Sam is not cool. Her dad left her mom, walks right out when Tara's 8, Sam 13. Sam started acting out, getting in trouble with the cops, and then on Sam 18th birthday, she leaves, ghosts them all. Maybe Sam's changed, but I just don't want to see Tara hurt again.
~ Amber "worries" about Tara.
Amber/Ghostface: Hello, Samantha.
Sam: Who is this?
Ghostface: Someone who knows your little family secret.
Sam: You’re the f-ck who hurt my sister?
Ghostface: She’s not the only one I’m gonna hurt. I had to get you to come back here somehow, didn't I?
Sam: You want to f-ck with me, asshole? I'm right here, come and get me.
Ghostface: With pleasure.
~ Amber's first phone call with Sam, before Richie attacked her in the hospital.
You know, the Netflix alibi is good, bro.
~ Amber to Richie, after he "accused" her of attacking Sam in the hospital.
Amber/Ghostface: Hello, Sheriff JU-DEE!
Judy: Who is this?
Ghostface: I think you know. I'm a fan of scary movies, and knives. What's your favorite scary movie?
Judy: I prefer animated films and musicals. Why are you doing this?
Ghostface: I'll tell you all about it I'm calling to turn myself in.
Judy: I think that's a great idea.
Ghostface: We'll sit down at the station, and I'll tell you about the two people I've killed.
Judy: You've only killed one person.
Ghostface: [laughs] By the time I see you, I'll have gutted your baby boy!
Judy: No! [drives back to her house and calls the patrol there, and tries to reach Wes, but he doesn't answer as he is taking the shower]
Ghostface: Can't get him on the phone, can you? He must be busy.
Judy: How do I know you're anywhere near him?
Ghostface: Ever seen the movie "Psycho"?
Judy: Please... don't hurt my boy...
Ghostface: Oh, Why not?
Judy: He's a good kid.
Ghostface: Is he, now?
Judy: He never hurt anyone!
Ghostface: That's not enough.

Judy: Please! I'll do anything!
Ghostface: You're not gonna make it in time, Sheriff Judy!

~ Amber's phone call with Sheriff Judy Hicks, before killing her.
Amber/Ghostface: Hello, Samantha. Richie can't come to the phone right now, he's finding out what happens to people who stick their noses in business that doesn't concern them.
Sam: Please don't hurt him.
Ghostface: I'll tell you what, now you can choose, I'll only kill one. Who do you want to hear die?
Sam: No, please I'm begging you! Please don't hurt them!
Ghostface: Really? You can't save your own sister? All you have to do is say - "kill Richie". [Amber knocks Tara out of her wheelchair]
Sam: No! No! No! Tara! Don't touch her! Please, please, please, I'm begging you!
Ghostface: Or say - "kill Tara," and I'll make sure to hit all the organs I missed last time.
Sam: I'm begging you! Please don't hurt her!
Ghostface: Last chance to save one, choose.
Sam: Why are you doing this?
Ghostface: You want to know why, Sam? Maybe it's because you're a selfish bitch, who can't even make a decision to save the life of someone you love... Maybe you're too weak for this franchise...
Sam: Maybe you're right... or maybe I'm just stalling for time, you f-ck-head!
[Sam and Dewey arrive at the hospital, Dewey shoots at Ghostface and saves Tara]
~ Amber's second phone call with Sam.
Yes, today!
~ Amber after stabbing Dewey.
Amber: [after got scared by Mindy in the basement] What the f-ck, Mindy?! Jesus!
Mindy: That was a test. And you failed. Never go off on your own with a masked killer around.
Amber: You’re the one that said we needed more beer.
Mindy: And you should have asked me to come with you.
Amber: You know what else you shouldn’t do when there’s a masked killer around? Follow someone into a dark, creepy basement alone. I mean… how do you know I’m not the killer?
Mindy: Because I am... [silence] I’m not, actually. But let that be a lesson Don’t trust anyone.
Amber: Then how can I trust you when you say you’re not the killer?
Mindy: Exactly. You’re learning. Now let’s go back upstairs.
Amber: You first.
Mindy: Very good.
~ Amber and Mindy in the basement.
Amber: [notices attacked Mindy] AH! [to Sam] What did you do to her?!
Sam: Nothing. No, I didn’t do anything. The killer, he…
Richie: [appears in the living room, dropping a bottle of beer] What the f-ck?
Sam: Richie, where the f-ck were you?
Richie: I went into the basement to get some beer.
Amber: You went to the basement alone?
Richie: I asked her to come with me! She said no!
Liv: [runs into the living room, crying] Jesus Christ!
Amber: [to Liv] Stay the f-ck back. [to all] I was with Tara, but the rest of you were wandering around. One of you is the f-cking killer!
Liv: F-ck you, Amber. F-ck you!
Sam: Why is there blood on your hands?
Liv: What? [tears] I found Chad. I found Chad and he’s…
Sam: Chad?
Amber: You’re f-cking lying.
Richie: You’re the killer.
Liv: No, I’m not.
Amber: Liv, stop. Liv, just stop!
~ Amber accuses Liv for being the killer.
Third Act bloodbath, check. Killers revealed, check. Time for the big finale!
~ Amber Freeman.
Amber: You know what the biggest problem with the Stab movies is? There’s no Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees. No bad guy to keep coming back. But the illegitimate daughter of the original mastermind? Now that’s a f---ing villain.
Sam : How did you know?
Amber: Oh, about your father? I mean, it’s a small town, and your mom’s a drunk!
~ Amber explaining her motive.
I met Richie on the Stab subreddit. I’ve been obsessed ever since my parents bought this house. We realized pretty quickly we had similar ideas.
~ Amber about how she met Richie.
Amber: It wouldn’t work with just you, Sam. See, we had to bring the legacy characters back to make it matter. Can’t have a bona fide Halloween without Jamie Lee!
Richie: Nope!
Amber: Dewey had to die to make it real. To show that this wasn’t just some bullshit, cash-in, run-of-the-mill sequel. Because our movie has f-cking stakes! ‘Cause
anyone can die in a requel.
~ Amber further explaining her motives, alongside Richie.
F-cking hand sanitizer, really?!
~ Amber Freeman after being hit with Sidney.
Amber: No, no, no, no, no, no! It's not my fault, it's not my fault!
Sidney: Let me guess, the movies made you do it?
Amber: No, no, no, it was the message boards! I was radicalized!
Gale: By movie fans?
Amber: Yes, they're so mad! Please, it's not my fault! I'm just a dumb kid, I just wanted to be a part of something!
Gale: "A part of something"? YOU KILLED MY BEST FRIEND!
Amber: [stops acting apologetic and smiles with glee] Yeah, and he died like a pussy!
~ Amber being confronted Sidney and Gale before taunting them about Dewey's death, before being violently punched in the face by very psychotic angry Gale for her foolish words.
Amber: I was the last thing Dewey saw before he died too. I can’t believe I get to do you both! No last-minute saves this time, your story’s over! Time to pass the torch.
Gale: [to Amber] It's all yours, bitch! [hits Amber]
[to Sidney] You want to do the honors?
Sidney: This one's yours.
Amber: No, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop! I’m sorry, about Dewey!
Gale: F-ck you!
~ Amber foolishly begging for mercy, also her last words before being shot and lit ablaze, by Gale Weathers.

Trivia[]

  • She is the Scream franchise's fifth female killer, preceded by Nancy Loomis, Jill Roberts, Piper Shaw and Beth, and followed by Quinn Bailey.
  • She is the third killer in the franchise who has genuine romantic feelings toward another character (the first is Charlie Walker and the second is Tom Martin).
  • She was the eighth revealed Ghostface killer in the Scream film franchise, co-killer of the third Woodsboro Murders and the third female antagonist (following Nancy Loomis from Scream 2 and Jill Roberts from Scream 4).
  • Amber is a "requel" homage to Stu Macher.
    • They are both eccentric and emotionally volatile.
    • They are both were smashed in the head with a glass object in defense; Stu with a Vase and Amber with an empty Alcohol bottle approximately the same size the vase was Sidney hit Stu with in the original.
    • They have childish outbursts and resort to childish excuses, even after being confronted for their crimes.
    • They both lived in the same house, 261 Turner Lane, Woodsboro, California.
    • They both choose to have a party, while their parents are gone, at the most inappropriate time (while friends are getting killed), and ultimately prove to be the host of the mastermind behind the killings.
    • Feigns naivety about the crimes committed before trying to attack again, similar to Stu.
    • She also seems to have some sort of obsession towards Stu.
    • Unlike Richie, who made his plan solely to provide material for Hollywood to make a new Stab and didn't want to get his hands dirty, Amber didn't have the same fanaticism as Richie and it seemed that she was having more fun than really wanting a new Stab, just like Stu.
  • Early casting calls and scripts portrayed Amber as formerly in a relationship with Tara Carpenter. These elements were cut from the theatrical release for unknown reasons.
  • Amber is among the most accomplished Ghostface killers. She manages to brutally murder legacy character Dewey Riley, who previously survived seven Ghostfaces before her, and also killed off Judy Hicks, another legacy character.
  • Unlike the other Ghostface pairs, such as Billy and Stu, Mickey and Nancy, and Jill and Charlie, there is no main Ghostface between Amber and Richie, since their tasks are well distributed between the two of them and also due to the fact that they are lovers.
    • "One of the things that we liked to talk about is that the Richie character thinks that it was all his idea. It’s actually probably Amber’s idea, and she’s kind of been leading from behind. And we just love that that makes Richie just one of the most pathetic characters at the end of the day, that he doesn’t really want to get his hands dirty and do the gross stuff. He wants to intellectualize it all, and Amber’s like, ‘F*ck it. I’ll break eggs!'”. That's what the directors said about the two Ghostfaces.
  • Both her and Richie Kirsch may loosely be based on the Candian killer couple Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Bernardo was convicted of 3 murders, 16 rapes and 8 attempted rapes and was given life in prison and is still incarcerated to date while Homolka was convicted on two counts of manslaughter and only served 12 years and was released in 2005.
    • Like Bernardo and Homolka, Amber was in her teens while Richie was in his 20s when they dated.
    • Homolka was believed to be an unwillingly accomplice in Bernardo's crimes, upon further investigation, she took a large part in the crimes herself. This is similar to Amber playing a large role in the killing spree she helped Richie take part in.
  • Amber is uniquely the first (and to date only) Ghostface who wielded a revolver instead of a blowback pistol.
