Isn't she a little fat for the show?
~ Amber cruelly mocking Tracy Turnblad.

Amber Von Tussle is the secondary antagonist of the musical Hairspray. She is the spoiled daughter of Velma Von Tussle (and, in the 1988 film, Franklin Von Tussle) and the ex-girlfriend of Link Larkin (the source of her rivalry with the protagonist, Tracy Turnblad).

In the 1988 film, she was portrayed by Colleen Fitzpatrick (later known as Vitamin C), while in the 2007 adaptation of the musical, she was portrayed by Brittany Snow, respectively. In the 2016 NBC live musical telecast, she was portrayed by Dove Cameron, who also played Mal in the Disney Channel original movie Descendants.

Personality[]

She feels that she always has to be at the top and win. She is cruel to Tracy and always makes fun of her for being overweight. Tracy comes around and messes things up for her, which makes Tracy her enemy. Tracy also wins the heart of Amber's boyfriend, Link Larkin. Amber also shares an odd semi-friendship, semi-rivalry with Corny Collins over how much of the limelight they share.

Although she is very mean, Amber is not as racist or cruel as her mother, and has shown interest in black music and a handsome black dancer at the end of both movies. In the end, Amber undergoes a change of heart and accepts her defeat to Tracy before joining in the dance, much to Velma's irritation.

Biography[]

1988 Movie[]

Amber is infuriated when Tracy successfully steals her boyfriend, Link Larkin (Michael St. Gerard), and competes against her for the title of Miss Auto Show 1963. She ends up being dethroned by Tracy at the end of the movie.

2007 Movie[]

The teenagers featured on the The Corny Collins Show attend Tracy and Penny's school, among them Amber von Tussle and her boyfriend Link Larkin, the lead male dancer. Amber’s mother, Velma, manages WYZT and makes sure Amber is prominently featured.

At the end of the 2007 film adaption, Velma changes the pageant tallies so Amber is guaranteed to win. However, Link breaks away from Amber to dance with Tracy; later, he pulls Seaweed's sister, Little Inez, to the stage to dance in the pageant. Amber's attempt to re-claim her championship crown fails. Little Inez wins the pageant after a late surge of support, successfully integrating The Corny Collins Show. Amber, surprisingly, accept her loss. Velma tells Amber about her rigging scheme in front of a camera planted by Edna, resulting in her firing while Amber leaves her mother to her fate of being arrested. In either version of the ending, she is last seen watching everyone dance. In the original musical version and the 2016 NBC live musical telecast, however, both she and her mother are redeemed.
