...I'm gonna surpass my old man and rule as catnip king!
~ Amemura Short

Amemura Short is a minor antagonist in Nekogahara. He's a corrupt shogun that intended to rule his province by using a drug trade. After Norachiyo killed his gang, Short swore revenge and planned to kill Norachiyo himself. However, over the course of the story he would quickly find himself in conflict with his own villainous nature and realize that he can strive for better, making him a valuable ally to Norachiyo and Japan. He is the son of Amemura Rican Short.

Personality[]

Amemura Short is an arrogant cat who speaks more than what he can do. Despite boasting about how he and his team can destroy Norachiyo, he's extremely weak even to the point where he can't even draw Norachiyo's sword. He cares a lot about his friends, even going as far to avenge them after Norachiyo killed them all. Although he respects his father's work, he didn't respect who he was, wanting to take over the catnip trade thinking he can do better. Unlike Shishiwaka and his father, he doesn't seem to have a perverted attraction to women, having some standards over his father in one aspect. He also has standards, being angry when Norachiyo begged for his life despite all the atrocities he's committed.

Biography[]

Prior to the events of Nekogahara, Amemura Short was born into the catnip trade his father was running. Eventually he became a shogun due to how many people were influenced by the catnips and eventually made them subservient to his family's will. Eventually he banded a group of friends to aid him in his catnip trade.

Eventually Norachiyo would crossed paths with him as he was entering town. Amemura Short boasted about his position to him and eventually had his own gang surround him. Despite Norachiyo telling him not to fight him or he'd get hurt, Short refused and stole his katana in order to try to sell it as catnip. When Norachiyo learned about his drug trade, Short laughed telling him he doesn't need to give him a lecture on how wrong he is. However instead Norachiyo took Short's catnip and went high, thinking Short was the Red Warrior. As a result, he tried to take the katana off the sheath but failed as Norachiyo took it off himself. Norachiyo then proceeded to kill all of Short's gang during his hallucinations before realizing Short wasn't the Red Warrior and left.

After seeing Norachiyo kill the rest of his gang, Short was left wondering what even happened and wanted to avenge him for their deaths. That's when Shishiwaka with all the women of the town surrounding him, much to his wounded pride. However, Shishiwaka offered to help him kill Norachiyo to pay for the cats he's killed. When they reached the outskirts, they saw Norachiyo use a grain of rice in order to lure a bird into his meal. Shishiwaka and Short waited for Norachiyo to sleep in order for them to deliver the strike. Much to Short's surprise, Shishiwaka lent him his own katana in order for him to deliver the deed. Short sneaked into the building where Norachiyo slept in order to kill him in his sleep but was surprised when he saw Norachiyo was wide awake. Short was terrified and didn't know what to and froze with the katana in his hand and called for help, hopinh Shishiwaka didn't abandon him.

However, Shishiwaka was already there and dealt a critical blow to Norachiyo's back. After he told Short he wasn't intending to trust him with the mission and was using him as a decoy, Short called him a coward for not making it a fair fight. However, Shishiwaka told him there's no cowardice as Norachiyo was a high wanted criminal for murdering possibly hundreds of cats. After seeing Norachiyo beg for his life, Short grew angry and called him out on his atrocities as Shishiwaka laughed at the weakened Norachiyo. Ultimately Norachiyo managed to escape after spitting his blood to Shishiwaka's face before running away. Short wondered if he could even survive despite the injuries, he sustained from Shishiwaka.

Upon returning to his town, Shishiwaka took him to a place that had beautiful cats. Despite Shishiwaka wanting him to enjoy it, Short seemed uncomfortable with the aspect as Shishiwaka told him he won't surpass his father if he has the wrong attitude, one Short feels like it only makes his father perverted. Short then wondered why Shishiwaka took Norachiyo's bell that was on his katana with Shishiwaka not giving him a clear answer before heading to the bathroom. Eventually Shishiwaka was found unconcious after Norachiyo shoved a stick through his rear while he used the bathroom. Short was mortified by the sight and was in disbelief that Norachiyo was still alive despite his injuries. However, the police officer told him to believe it lest he's end up like Shishiwaka if he ever used the bathroom.

Angered by Norachiyo's survival, Amemura Short decided to steal a guest's katana in order to kill Norachiyo himself. When Amemura arrived to kill Norachiyo, he saw Norachiyo humping a log leaving him exasperated. When Norachiyo tried to explained that it was a shinobi trick done by a woman, Short didn't believe him and assumed that he was using catnip again. Enticed by the idea of catnip, Norachiyo asked Short if he could offer saw leading Short to grow impatient and want to kill him already. However, Norachiyo was already a step ahead of him and threw the log at him before coming up close and punching him in the gut. After falling, Short asked Norachiyo why he didn't kill him only for Norachiyo to respond that "he wasn't stupid". Not understanding his reasoning, Short grew even more impatient and was further driven by rage to kill him only for his scent to activate the vision of the Red Warrior. As a result, Norachiyo attacked him at full force as Short dodged, leaving the katana wedged on the tree. With Short cornered, Norachiyo decided to chew out Short's face, chewing off parts of his ear. In a moment, Short briefly regretted his plans to kill Norachiyo as he watched him try to deal the finishing blow on him.

Before Norachiyo could deliver the final strike, Short wondered what drove such a middle-aged cat to have that kind of strength. However, Short observed further and noticed the bell's details and realized Norachiyo's past with his master and how he searches for the truth behind the Red Warrior's death. That's when Amemura realized Norachiyo's true dedication to finding his master and not letting anything stop him and acknowledged it to him. As a result, Norachiyo snapped out of it after seeing a vision of himself and his own master before returning the katana back to its scabbard. Puzzled and angered by his decision to not kill him, Short raged and tried to figure out what was going through Norachiyo's mind. That's when Norachiyo explained that it was Short's scent that caused him to hallucinate the Red Warrior and that his father was his arch-nemesis. That's when it dawned on Short that the crest belonged to Ishdai Tsunari and discovered the true identity of Norachiyo's master. Wanting to find out more answers, Short tried to talk it out with Norachiyo abandoning his plan to kill him but Norachiyo not wanting to relive the experience made a decision to kill Short on his own terms. Set to defend himself instead, Short decided to learn from his lesson and use a weapon he knew well and brought out his kendama. Norachiyo thinking Short was outmatched by his weapon, Short took advantage of his underestimation and lured his katana to be wrapped around by the string. As a result, he yanked the hilt, creating enough force to blow Norachiyo back enough to knock him out. As a result, Short declared victory for his fallen friends only for him to pass out from his own injuries as well. Upon seeing the two, Little Fold and Mukuro decided to take them in to the village for treatment.

Amemura Short awoke over in the outpost where Okime met Norachiyo. Seeing Norachiyo alive, he was surprised and angered that his attack didn't kill him however Norachiyo surprisingly acted polite towards him and Okime. Thinking he was just being polite to impress her, he grew furious and more disgusted at him. After which he decided to collect his bearings and wash his face. Upon looking at his reflection, he realized how badly Norachiyo messed his face up, seeing his ear chewed down. Short thought about how angry his father would be if he saw his worn-down face but knew deep down, he never wanted to go back home anyways. However, Shishiwaka surprised Short by appearing before him and telling him that he should go home as soon as possible and follow his father's orders. Shishiwaka discussed about his encounter with Little Fold and Mukuro while they carried them both revealing the message that "they know who he really is" that was meant to be sent to them. As a result, Shishiwaka was worried about what they were dealing with and suggested that they lay low for a while, however Kurogane Hyoe appeared from behind the door and showed surprise over how quick Shishiwaka was to back out of Little Fold's plan in spite of being bold enough to try to kill Norachiyo.

Amemura Short was unaware of the battle between the two until he heard the commotion. During Shishiwaka's conversation with Hyoe, Short overheard the fact that his father was the one responsible for releasing him and his fellow members of The Pound. As Hyoe offered to take Short home due to "his father being worried", Shishiwaka took his chance to escape Hyoe' grasp and hold Short at katana point, threatening to kill him. Short was incredibly disturbed by this gambit, calling Shishiwaka a dirty coward. However, Kurogane Hyoe remained unphased knowing that it was a bluff. As a result, he admitted that his father didn't care much about him and that he thought he was too weak for him. Hyoe then confessed that he only made the offer to take him home just so he can "put him out of his misery". Angered at how everyone was pulling dirty rotten tricks, Short snapped and fired his kendama at Hyoe's neck. Infuriated that he landed a hit on him, Hyoe grabbed Short's face and attempted to brutally kill him, only for Shishiwaka to slash Hyoe and save Short, revealing that he never intended to kill him but to rile him up enough to use his kendama.

After the battle, Short and Shishiwaka went back to the outhouse in order to recover from their injuries. When Okime saw them, she was astonished and wondered what happened. Norachiyo out of curiosity wondered what happened as well and told Okime to boil them water. Short was still angered by Norachiyo's strange courteous nature. When they settled down, they discussed about what happened with Shishiwaka revealing details about the battle. Norachiyo was skeptical about their victory due to knowing how strong The Pound was leaving Short upset. When Norachiyo asked what Shishiwaka was doing here, Short reminded Shishiwaka about the message. At first Norachiyo didn't understand what he meant, but when he revealed The Pound's affiliation to Amemura Rican, he put it all together and offered a truce between the three in order to raid the castle. When Shishiwaka declined, Short insisted on at least considering the offer only for Shiriya Abyhei to show up and claim the three were under arrest for murdering Kurogane Hyoe. However, before Short could react to the charged Abyhei began to swing his sword to try to kill them. That's when Norachiyo hinted the fact Abyhei was their true enemy, and they need to run from him. However, they didn't realize this at first until they saw Abyhei brutally torturing Norachiyo by destroying his beloved katana and punching his tooth out. Seeing Norachiyo get brutally toyed around by Abyhei, Short became sick by his tactics and decided to help him. However, they were outmatched by him and just before Abyhei could deliver the final blow, his men came for backup. Not wanting to look suspicious, Abyhei backed out on killing them and decided to proceed with the arrest. However, that's when Short and Shishiwaka took their chance to escape to the river where they went downstream far away from the secret police.

Eventually, Short would grow closer with Norachiyo and become more committed by moving away from his life of crime and planned on killing his father over everything he did. Amemura Short would eventually move out of his comfort zone and become an admirable hero by convincing the captured civilians to fight against Shiriya Abyhei and the Furreign Nation's takeover or Japan. In spite of landing a bullet in his father out of rage, he would eventually realize that deep down his father always knew he would surpass him because he had stronger virtues than him and would grow closer to him in that moment. Many years later, Amemura Short would grow up to be an excellent shogun, fixing the mess his father made and ending the darkness the corruption plagued in Himetsu, Japan.
