The story of Amenadiel from the TV series Lucifer.
Backstory[]
Amenadiel is the eldest sibling of all the angels, including Lucifer, Uriel, Michael and their sisters Azrael and Remiel. He was the spawn of God and Goddess, celestial entities who created Heaven, Hell and the mortal universe, most notably the Earth that is populated by the mortal humans. Amenadiel was known for being more powerful than the other angels, but it is pointed out that he never actually fought Lucifer and so it is up for debate. Nonetheless, he was looked up to and admired by his younger siblings, especially Remiel, and would often play with them when he was an angel child, except for Uriel whom they excluded from their activities. The only sibling Amenadiel disliked was Lucifer's twin brother Michael who enjoyed getting under his skin by exploiting his fears, which only resulted in Amenadiel giving him "atomic wedgies". Like all of his other siblings, Amenadiel was unquestionably loyal to their father, always follow his rules and notably taking his side when Lucifer led the rebellion that got him cast down to Hell. God later gave him a necklace that was secretly a key to reassembling the Flaming Sword since he was also God's true favorite son.
He obeyed God's commands without question, having assisted mankind in ancient times to learn about the divine powers that created them by telling them stories involving his angel family without revealing his powers or identity. He also took this opportunity to irritate Lucifer by spreading a commonly known myth about the devil being associated with goats, which they took seriously and resulted in the creation of satanism. According to Lucifer's demon assistant Mazikeen "Maze", Lucifer hated being connected to goats. Sometime after the rebellion, Amenadiel followed his father's instruction to send Goddess down to Hell as well for causing disasters that results in several human genocides. When Cain murdered his brother Abel, God sent Amenadiel to mark him with immortality as punishment for his crime. Eventually, at some point in the early 1980s, he was sent to bless a human couple that couldn't conceive a child, a manner that was never asked of again or even before. Little did he know was that it was part of God's plan to create a human that would render Lucifer vulnerable and eventually fall in love with, presumably to try and make amends with his son.
Over the years, Lucifer would leave Hell and interact with humans on Earth, which was against the rules and Amenadiel would often be sent to take him back to the underworld. In 2011, Lucifer did it again and arrived in Los Angeles, prompting Amenadiel to do it again and threaten him with confronting their father for his rebelliousness. While he did succeed, he was attacked by a human thief who stole his necklace. Knowing that humans aren’t allowed to possess divine objects, he tried to use its law enforcement to recover it, prompting him to meet a then-officer Chloe Decker. After this failed, he is forced to work with Lucifer and Maze to recover it in exchange for a favor. The two then engage in an MMA fight, in Lucifer's bid to prove who’s strongest and Amenadiel lets him win to prove that unlike his little brother, he cannot control his pride. Eventually, the two retrieve the necklace and leave the thief to be arrested. Afterwards, Lucifer uses his favor to stay on Earth and Amenadiel warns him that their father will be furiously wrathful before returning to Heaven.
Season 1[]
Five years later, Amenadiel returned to Earth when God requested that Lucifer is to be returned to Hell immediately. Confronting his brother in his new nightclub Lux, Amenadiel warned him about disrespecting their father again and about what would happen to all of the demons and tortured souls residing in Hell without a king to keep them in check. Lucifer however didn't care and considered the position open, prompting Amenadiel to threaten him with his angel wing before laughing it off, saying that God won't be merciful for much longer just as he left. He then began watching Lucifer from a distance and noticed how he was showing restraint and mercy, something that goes against what he's meant to represent. He confronted him two days later outside of Lux and told him how there’s a balance to maintain, ordering him to go back to Hell. Lucifer refused and told him that he wouldn't want to start a war, only for Amenadiel to enjoy one and how he grows more hateful of him with every visit and leaves him to his business.
A few weeks later, Amenadiel started getting worried that if he was unable to convince Lucifer to return to Hell, he would have to take over as its sovereign. He then approached Lucifer in his penthouse and mocked about how he was once the brightest of all of God's angels compared to his behavior now. He then offers Lucifer to go back to Hell and he'll speak to God, but Lucifer gleefully mocked him about how he would to take over if he didn't return. Although Amenadiel denies it would ever happen, Lucifer knew otherwise since it's happened before with him. Amenadiel then pointed out how his time on Earth is changing him, especially when he saved Detective Decker's life because he cared about her, further adding that it should scare him since while he normally controls change, this time it isn't. As Lucifer told him to leave, Amenadiel complied while requesting that he considers his offer. Days later, Lucifer summoned him during a standoff with Chloe, Maze and two suspects as one of them fired at the other. After Lucifer says that he was right, Amenadiel assumed that he would return to Hell but Lucifer quickly corrected him and explained how his time on Earth is changing him and he finds it thrilling, and he only summoned him to annoy him and remedy the situation. Amenadiel then threatened how Lucifer should've taken the offer before leaving.
Two weeks later, Amenadiel observed Lucifer from a distance in order to formulate a plan to get him back to Hell. Deducing that Maze is having second thoughts about being on Earth, he approaches her at Lux to convince her to help him. Maze refuses to help him but Amenadiel is confident that he will change her mind, suggesting her not to make it painful. She isn't fazed by the threat since she loves pain and the two fight with Amenadiel easily overpowering her. After pinning her to a pillar, he shouts that they want the same thing but she responds by licking his face, startling him to let her go. As Amenadiel points out how they know something has changed in Lucifer, Maze considers it a phase that'll pass but he knows that she's lying to herself. He explains that they can get him back if she provides him with a weakness he can exploit, but she still says no.
After days of reconsidering, Maze starts to agree with Amenadiel and the two meet up in a coffee shop. As she explains how the shop reminds her of home and she wants to go back, Amenadiel requests that she give him something to work with so he can get them both back. She explains that he has now been confiding in a therapist named Dr. Linda Martin. To get close to her to find a weak spot, Amenadiel posed as a therapist named "Dr. Canaan" and moved into the office next door before introducing himself to her.
After some time coercing Linda and working with Maze, Amenadiel learned about Lucifer severing his wings and storing them in a container, conjuring a plan to have them stolen and be exposed to mankind so he could long for them, kill the thief and be reminded about who he was so he can go back willingly. Hearing about Carmen Grant, a black market auction host who supposedly sells off historical artifacts, he tips him off about where the wings are kept so he can steal them. As Lucifer left one of his and Linda's appointments, Amenadiel visited her after overhearing them and Linda explains that Lucifer talks in metaphors, which Amenadiel goes along with it and offers to consult him with her patient in secret attempt to understand Lucifer better.
Several days later, Amenadiel and Lucifer met on a beach where the latter had his wings severed, who explains his predicament. Playing along, Amenadiel refuses to help him since it was his fault and tells him to retrieve them himself. He then changes his mind and agrees to help Lucifer by meeting with Carmen, who refuses to give them to him and says they must bid for them. As the two of them head down to the auction to await bidding, Lucifer confesses to him that he's now mortal, making Amenadiel happy now he knows how to get him back. There, he then meets Chloe who says that the F.B.I. is planning a raid. As the F.B.I. does so after the wings are revealed, Amenadiel slows down time so Lucifer can inspect them which turned out to be fake. Later that night, after Lucifer retrieved them from Carmen and waited on the beach with them, Amenadiel attempted persuade Lucifer to put them back on his back so he can go back. However, Lucifer instead lit them on fire much to Amenadiel's horror as he knows what he did. In a fit of rage, Amenadiel attacks Lucifer who urges him to continue and fall as he did. Realizing he was doing, Amenadiel stops and declares it wasn't over.
Getting more and more desperate and knowing that Lucifer could return to Hell if he was killed, Amenadiel visited the hospital and revived a comatose corrupt police detective Malcolm Graham just mere seconds after the machine was switched off, knowing that he knew what Hell was like enough to not want to go back. Afterwards, Amenadiel made a deal with Malcolm that if he killed someone for him, he would never go back; but if he refused, he would send him back. As Malcolm spent some time readjusting to life, Amenadiel observed him until he confronted him about not making up on their deal. Malcolm asked why him unless he was special, but Amenadiel told him to not flatter himself and only did it because he is a cop. He then told him to not keep him waiting since patience is not one of his virtues.
A day later, Amenadiel confronted him in a diner about enjoying the life he's been given before asking him if he wants to go back, saying that his 30 seconds in Hell probably felt like 30 years and he can be sent back for eternity. After Malcolm agrees to do it, Amenadiel tells him that the target is Lucifer Morningstar. Feeling like everything was going to plan, Amenadiel treated himself to having dinner at a restaurant until he was interrupted by Maze, who is angry at him for turning Lucifer against her after finding out. Amenadiel accuses her of being alone with no one to talk to but she says that his life is boring. To prove her wrong, he reveals he was the one who told humanity about the story with Lucifer and the goat, showing his humorous side. As the two started bonding, they ended up having sex in a car.
A week later, Amenadiel learned that Malcolm didn't kill Lucifer and confronted him about it, who spilled the beans about how he can't send him back since he's an angel and is therefore not allowed to. Ultimately, Amenadiel couldn't make him a better offer and is forced to give up with him. Feeling like a failure for not being able to fulfil one simple task, Amenadiel waited at his residence for Maze and feels like he's made things worse by sleeping with a demon, and as she tries to comfort him, he says he can't face his father for being a failure and has to complete his task. After the two have sex, he catches her trying to kill him with a demon blade, realizing that Lucifer sent her to kill him just like he tried to do the same with Malcolm. Hurt by this, Amenadiel confronted Lucifer in his penthouse while he was attacking Malcolm, who was now killing humans. As Amenadiel claimed it was always his fault and the two fight, where the two of them also argue about who was using pawns against each other and who is the real villain in their feud. The fight was eventually broken up by Maze who accused them both of using her as a pawn, leaving them demon blades to use to kill each other. Amenadiel simply left without saying a word as Lucifer went to get a drink in Lux.
After some time of rethinking, Amenadiel came to the realization that Maze was right that his obsession with getting Lucifer to Hell has made him lose sight of the bigger picture and that people are now dying because of Malcolm's insanity. After Lucifer was framed for the murder of Jacob Williams by Malcolm and tried to tempt the cops to killing him, Amenadiel saved him and took him to a rooftop. As Lucifer begged him to take him back to Hell after becoming sick of how humanity treats him, Amenadiel refused and accepted that what Malcolm's doing is his fault, explaining that he needs to get him back where he belongs and agrees to take Lucifer back afterwards. Arriving at Amenadiel's office, they try to conjure a plan to find Malcolm until Linda walks in on them. The two of them then confess that they are brothers and that Amenadiel posed as a therapist to manipulate Lucifer, making Linda feel betrayed.
During the talk, the brothers realize that Malcolm is going to try to run to start over and go to see a forger who dealt with Lucifer's paperwork, where they learn that Malcolm is going to see someone named Tommy. Needing more intel, they visit Chloe's separated husband Detective Dan Espinoza and learn of a criminal named Tommy Compolongo has the money Malcolm needs for his getaway. The two of them then approach Tommy's whereabouts and fight his henchmen, where Amenadiel learns that Chloe makes Lucifer vulnerable. After splitting up, Amenadiel is stabbed by one of Maze's blades. Taken back to Lucifer's penthouse, Maze uses a feather from Lucifer's wings to heal and leave him unconscious. After waking up, Lucifer informs him that Malcolm is dealt with and that he learned from their father that they have been tasked with recapturing an escape resident of Hell: their mother.
Season 2[]
Over the next few days, Amenadiel and Lucifer searched for their mother, knowing that she would need a vessel, but to no avail. After learning of Chloe's attempt to uncover Lucifer's true colors, he tricks her into believing otherwise. He then starts realizing that he is losing his angelic powers. While trying to figure out why, a conversation with Linda makes him realize that it may be karma since he did bad things out of his obsession to return Lucifer to Hell. After losing his wings completely, Amenadiel becomes depressed by this. He then reunited with his mother, who was in the form of defense attorney Charlotte Richards, and then witnesses Lucifer punishing her for escaping Hell: live among the human race that she so despises.
While still agonizing over his diminishing powers, Amenadiel learns of Lucifer's bargain with God to bring their mother back: the safety of Chloe. After Uriel arrives to force Lucifer on his deal, Amenadiel confronts him to scare him off, only for him to be overpowered. He then comes clean to Lucifer about his current predicament. After Uriel's death, he agrees to help his mother get back home to reunite with the family, but questions her methods after Lucifer refuses. When Goddess learns of Lucifer's growing interest for Chloe, Amenadiel stops her from killing her. When attempting to apologize to Maze via advice from Linda, he learns that Chloe was the child whose parents God sent him to bless, and then tells Goddess about it. The two of them then try to push Lucifer and Chloe towards each other, only for him to find out about it as well much to his anger.
When Chloe was poisoned by the deluded serial killer Dr. Jason Carlisle, Amenadiel helped Lucifer save her by retrieving the cure from the deceased doctor. After Lucifer left the city and returned married to another woman, Amenadiel confronts him for hurting Chloe's feelings. only for to explain that he is not trying to hurt her; rather, he is protecting her by giving her free will back. After Goddess devised a plan to use the Flaming Sword to get home, they are able to learn that it was divided into three pieces: Azrael's blade, the medallion of life and the key to bind them which was entrusted to God's favorite son, Amenadiel. After learning of this, Amenadiel regains confidence and bids to not get Goddess back to Hell.
However, after Goddess starts getting impatient as her vessel form began to grow weaker and tortured Linda, Amenadiel gave Lucifer the key to do what needs to be done while he is later able to use whatever remains of his time powers to help Maze save Linda.
Season 3[]
A few days later, Amenadiel learns that Lucifer has sent Goddess to a void outside of their universe. He also learns that Lucifer has regained his wings, cannot get rid of them, lost his devil-face and was kidnapped by a criminal mastermind known only as "the Sinnerman". After trying to fill in Lucifer's shoes, he comes to the conclusion that he lives a luxurious lifestyle to cover up how lonely he is, and believes that his test is to have his back. He then begins comforting Linda about the loss of her ex-husband Reese Getty, thus mending their friendship. They even begin growing closer, much to Maze's discomfort. The two of them eventually kiss, unaware that Maze was watching and became furious.
Amenadiel was confronted by Marcus Pierce, who was secretly Cain and wanted to know how to remove the mark. After he told him that he didn't know, the two of them fought with Amenadiel coming out on top. He then decides to do whatever it takes to protect Lucifer from Pierce, knowing what he's truly capable of. Amenadiel and Linda were then tricked onto a blind date by Maze, much to his discomfort. Later, after learning of Abel's escape from Hell, Amenadiel attempted to convince him into suicide to get him back to Hell, only for that to fail. He then calls Maze childish for ruining his chance at romance. Amenadiel then begins to notice Charlotte falling apart and despite Linda's advice to keep his distance, he convinces Lucifer to reveal his angel wings.
In an attempt to help Lucifer win back Chloe's heart, Amenadiel hires Charlotte to help expose Pierce as the true Sinnerman. However, the two of them were unable to find any evidence. After learning that Chloe accepted Pierce's proposal, Amenadiel gets Charlotte to try and give Chloe second thoughts, which ultimately succeeds, while he tries to persuade Pierce against losing his immortality. Amenadiel then helps Charlotte in legal case while attempting to get his wings back. Afterwards, while talking with Charlotte, she sacrifices herself after Pierce attempts to kill him. In tears, Amenadiel regains his wings and flies her off to Heaven.
When Amenadiel returned to Heaven, not only did he grant Charlotte access to living there, he also learned that the Silver City's hierarchy had change drastically. Michael had become God's new right-hand but had changed the rules by making himself the only one allowed to speak to him. Although this concerned Amenadiel, he didn't act on it knowing it was out of his hand.
Alternate reality[]
In the episode "Once Upon a Time" which is set in a universe parallel to its main counterpart, Amenadiel spent eight years trying to get Lucifer to return to Hell but to no avail. Because of his failure and his unchanged loyalty towards his family, he could never return to Heaven out of disappointment from his family. Because of this, he is forced to remain on Earth but is unable to interact with humanity out of fear that they would be exposed to divinity. He is first seen being summoned by Lucifer so he could slow down time and pull a crime investigation suspect out of fast oncoming racing car. He explains his predicament to Lucifer, who only laughs at him and calls him a "homeless man". He then suggested to his older brother that he should try talking to humans and see what happens, to which Amenadiel considers. He then leaves upon Lucifer's request and speeds up time again back to normal speed as he left. He last seen at the end of the episode trying to summon enough courage to talk to a human but doesn't go through with it.
Season 4[]
Months later, Amenadiel returned to Earth after deciding to live among the humans, now fully accepting that angels can decide where they belong and choose their own fate. He begins making amends with Mazikeen and Linda Martin about their fighting, and then he later comforts Dan Espinoza about Charlotte's death. He then tries to fit in with their society, but was then surprised by Linda's news that she was pregnant with his child, later revealed as a boy. At first, Amenadiel is unsure how to process this but is able to agree to help Linda work through it. They even begin baby-proofing the ceiling due to their son being half-angel. He eventually learns of Eve's return to Earth, and becomes concerned about her affecting Lucifer's moral behavior.
