Grave of the Fireflies 1988 (Studio Ghibli)[]
In 1945, during the final days of WWII, the American Boeing B-29 Superfortresses bombed the whole city of Kobe, Japan in revenge for the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. In the aftermath of the attack most of Kobe was left in ruins while charred bodies lay around. Two young Japanese children, Seita and Setsuko, managed to survive the bombing, however their mother dies from critical burns and injuries she had received from the air raid. Seita tried to prevent Setsuko from knowing the dark reality of their mother's death, but she would find out later on.
Both Setsuko and Seita ended up going to their aunts house as they have nowhere else to go. During their stay, Seita and Setsuko were forced to go to shelter several times when the US forces launched more air raids. However, overtime, their aunt later became resentful towards the two, which escalated to the point where Seita and Setsuko had had enough and they left their aunts house to live on their own, moving into an abandoned bomb shelter.
The two children began releasing fireflies in the shelter in order to have light when night falls. Setsuko gets upset once she finds out that the fireflies had died and proceeded to bury them. As she does so, she reveals to her brother of her knowledge that their mother is dead, much to his horror. When she sadly asks on why do fireflies and their mother have to pass away in the first place, Seita wept in silence.
