All the strength in the flesh. And the bitter caress. And the taste of blood on my tongue.
~ An'ggrath mocks Lorgar's holy scrolls

An'ggrath, titled The Unbound was a Bloodthirster of Khorne, one of the most dangerous Chaos Daemons in existence. After Skarbrand's betrayal, An'ggrath took the position of Khorne's favorite (and perhaps strongest) daemon. Both the Reaper and the Unbound despise one another and wish to fight the other, but Khorne forbids this as it would be wasting their combined killing talents for the two Bloodthirsters to murder one another.[1]

He is mentioned in both the Age of Sigmar and 40K properties, but has no presence in Warhammer Fantasy. In all the settings he appears in, he is an antagonist.

Overview[]

Characteristics[]

It is the revered Champion of the Blood God, Lorgar. And it has come to kill you.
~ Ingethel the Daemon, to Lorgar

An'ggrath is described as having huge, bestial black wings with flaps powerful enough to create blasts of wind and a sound as if promising thunderstorms. He is muscular, much of his body covered in scarred fur while the rest of is form is encased in daemon-brass plating. This brass armor was forged by Khorne himself.[2] Lorgar likens it's head to a devil-spirit called Seytan, noting that otherwise An'ggrath's features defy easy description. The Daemon was colossal, each first the size of a legionary, gripping axe in one hand and a sentient lashing whip in the other. His hooves were armored and each step caused the earth to tremble.

Eye of Terror further describes him as a being whose fur constantly drips with the blood of the slain. Triangular shoulder pads sit on his frame and his armour is magnificent, colored red and black, and liberally decorated. His face is likened do a dog or a wolf and his horns are said to be a glistening black. His axe, blessed by Khorne, is the prison of another Greater Daemon of Khorne. He is described as both lithe and mascular.[3]

His scent is described as a "spicy reek" and spoiled meet, particularly when his wings are outstretched.

Information[]

Warhammer 40K[]

An'ggrath is an Exalted Bloodthirster belonging to the First Host of Murder, the deadliest war-host of them all in all of Khorne's legions. He is one of the largest and most powerful Bloodthirsters in existence and can cut down god-machines with a few well-placed blows from his Monstrous Axe.[4]

Lorgar battle the Greater Daemon and defeated it in Aurelian, albeit not without serious injuries.[5]

Even amongst the Emperor's oldest and staunchest of guardians, there are names spoken in whispers that evoke deep dread. An'ggrath is one such being. He was created by Khorne to be the ultimate expression of the Blood God's creed of slaughter and is revered by other daemons in war in the warp. In order to even attempt his summoning, the summoner must deeply please Khorne with the scale of offered slaughter. Few attempt to call upon An'ggrath and in ten thousand years, the Deathbringer has blighted the mortal world only two times via summoning. To summon the Daemon without the proper bloody benediction risks Khorne's own wrath and displeasure.

The Charnel Cult, worshippers of the Blood God, were one such group of mortals summoned the Daemon in an event that come to be known as the Anshur summoning. This was done accidentally, as the Cult was set upon by vengeful Imperium forces and called upon their god as an act of desperation. An'ggrath, as well as several thousand other daemons, was called from beside Khorne's throne. Hungry for slaughter and for souls, An'ggrath reaped the entire planet of life -- cultists and marines both -- then expanded his campaign of destruction to surrounding worlds. The Grey Knights and Red Hunters were able to stop his rampage, but not before millions of skulls had been tithed to Khorne.[6]

An'ggrath worked with a young Lord of Change simply called The Great Inventor in a long-running scheme that would eventually result in the alliance of Khorne and Tzeentch and the deaths of the other Powers. However, due to schemes from Slaanesh's own minions and by involving the Space Marine Magron, this plan was undone by simply yelling 'Blood for the Blood God' in the midst of a Khornate-Tzeentchian meeting. That resulted in the slaughter of all present and An'ggrath damning the alliance, nearly killing the Lord of Change with his axe.[7]

Age of Sigmar[]

An'ggrath was one of the four Exalted Greater Daemons to be confronted and defeated by Sigmar, alongside Luxcious, Rotigus, and Kairos.
