	~ An Innocent Guy

An Innocent Guy is the titular main protagonist in the short Batman story of the same name, appearing in Batman: Black and White issue #4. He is a psychopath who concocts a plan to kill Batman just to see if he is capable of committing the worst crime he can imagine.

He was created by comic book writer and artist Brian Bolland, best known for the art in the seminal 1988 graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke.

Biography[]

An Innocent Guy is first seen at a desk, presumably in his own home in front of a camera, where he talks about his plans to "do a really bad thing". He believes that a person can only be truly good if they know they are capable of evil and choose to do good instead. He believes that, by committing a terrible crime, he will prove that he is a good person because he will know firsthand what evil feels like and will afterward choose good instead.

He theorizes that his crime has to be reprehensible, unnecessary, and above all without any motive, as to not get caught. His first idea was to kidnap a little girl and chain her up inside of an old sewer shaft that only he apparently knows about and then leave her there to starve to death, but then decides against it as it "isn't enough" as only a few people would actually know and care about her death. His next idea is to kill a famous person whose death would affect many people and that the whole world knows. He then decides to kill Batman.

The man says he would wait for Batman after the Dark Knight has defeated a criminal in his Rogues Gallery, such as Two-Face or The Penguin. He would take a moment to admire Batman's courage and heroism from the shadows, and then shoot him in the head, killing him. An Innocent Guy says that before Batman is even found, he'll have already left and destroyed the tape recording of his plan, leaving absolutely no evidence and nothing tying him to the crime.

He goes on to say that, after killing Batman, he will live a blameless life in which he will marry his girlfriend, have children, and go to Heaven after he dies.

After making the recording, it is entirely unknown as to whether or not the man would actually go through with the plan and if he did, it's unclear if he would be successful in assassinating Batman or miss his shot and end up in Arkham Asylum.

In one panel, a stack of books can be seen on An Innocent Guy's desk, one of which is The Vanishing. In that book, main antagonist Raymond Lemorne kidnaps and murders a young woman for much the same reason an Innocent Guy does: he wants to see if he has it in him to do the worst thing he can imagine.
