Anabella Rosfield is a major antagonist of the 2023 Video Game Final Fantasy XVI. She is the abusive mother of Clive, Joshua, and Olivier who was originally the Duchess of Rosaria and was married to Elwin Rosfield till betraying her kingdom for Sanbreque. She married Sylvestre Lesage, gave birth to Olivier and turned Sanbreque into a tyrannical reign seeking to destroy any town or kingdom that doesn't follow Sanbreque.
She is voiced by Yurika Hino in Japanese and Christina Cole in English.
Personality[]
Anabella is a narcissistic parent who views her children as tools for her own personal gain as when the Phoenix "rejected" Clive, she treated him worse than she treated anyone else and was very demanding of Joshua due to him inheriting the power. She also didn't treat Jill any differently as she treated her just as horribly as she treats Clive even allowing knights to take her and put her in slavery along with Clive and having them separated to make them suffer more. Despite all of this, she hypocritically wanted their love even though she treated them as less than dirt, the only child she adored or seem to have adored was Olivier as he was the youngest and he was given the privilege to become the next heir to Sanbreque instead of his older half-sibling Dion. When "Olivier" died, she broke down in tears though this could be possibly that she now lost her only chance of having power instead of Olivier himself. The way she treated the rest of her family was just as horrid as she had no love for her first husband Elwin as he had the complete opposite mindset she had especially when it came to Clive as Elwin adored him and thought the highest of him. Her second marriage wasn't any better as she manipulated Sylvestre into becoming a ruthless tyrant and destroying any town that would dare pose as a threat even when not necessary.
Coming from a line of elitists, she is an arrogant, smug, egotistical, spiteful, callous, and entitled as she believes that someone's true character comes from their social status and that royal bloodlines to be the only thing worth anything as another reason behind her betrayal of Rosaria was to produce a new heir to Sanbreque and start anew after Joshua "died". This belief was also so strong that she manipulated Sylvestre into accepting her twisted philosophy and turn Sanbreque into what it originally wasn't. Her ego and lust for power also blinded her from the possibilities of potential uprisings especially from in Sanbreque except from Dion which only happened after he has had enough of her and her husband's tyranny. She couldn't see how her actions led to these events as she held no accountability for any of her actions and blamed Clive, Dion, or anyone else she can think of when Sanbreque falls, and "Olivier" is killed. The lack of responsibility also fed her god complex as she believed that she was a messiah that could do no wrong and was always in control. Anabella is very delusional and can't see that deep down sovereignty means nothing without a land or people to rule in it and that a ruler's true objective is to always think of and protect their people and not the sovereignty first. This also stands with her prejudice towards the bearers as she couldn't accept or saw how they were needed in society or had any place whatsoever.
Despite all her bravado, Anabella is a massive coward as she immediately cowers in fear after seeing Sylvestre killed by Dion (by accident) and slit her own throat after thinking that Joshua was just a monster ready to take her. Her cowardice and inability to accept reality destroyed any chance she had of having a kingdom as she let her own selfish greed and incorrigible nature completely destroy herself as now, she had no one else to rule or want to stand alongside her showing she was ignorant to the end.
