An Undead wizarding student Lich with a grudge. She seems to be behind the unfortunate explosions at the Astral Academy Library and Arcane Repository. She's capable of casting various elemental spells and wields a sinister scythe for melee combat.
~ Anastasia the Lich's in-game profile.

Anastasia the Lich is a female lich who serves as both main antagonist and final boss of Nine Parchments, a spin-off of Trine series.

She is a powerful lich who was once the wizarding student of Astral excelled in Death Magic spells and the senior of Astral Academy's problem students Cornelius Crownsteed, Marvek the Torrid, Carabel the Glacial, Rudolfus the Strange, The Mechanical Owl, Nim the Cleaner, and Selius Heatherwood. Denied of the chance to graduate by her former teachers, the resentful Anastasia recklessly experimented with magic spells she stole from Astral Academy and died in the attempt before returning to destroy her former school.

She is voiced by Rachel Atkins.

Plot[]

Background[]

I went to my grave never completing my spell book because the wizards never allowed me to graduate! But now I will take my vengeance upon these halls! Soon the Academy will be nothing but ruins!
~ Anastasia's rant which provided insight about her past.

As discussed by Rudolfus, Nim, and Selius Anastasia was once a former student of Astral Academy who devoted her entire life for more Death Magic spells into her disposal generations ago. A dark potential in her heart didn't go unnoticed by the Academy's teachers at the time who promptly denied of the chance to graduate, let alone receiving one last spell added into her spell book. Embittered by this, Anastasia dangerously experimented with spells she stole from Arcane Repository which included mutating wildlife by imbuing elemental into their very being to prove them wrong. Unfortunately, her failure in taking necessary precautions while doing so resulted both her untimely demise and magical waste disaster everyone struggled to contain to the day.

Anastasia's death did little in soothing her resentments that, upon being revived thanks to a fiasco conducted by a dead-raising warlock in the Vault of the Artifacts in the Academy, she turned herself into a powerful lich as the first step to extract her vengeance against her former school.

Nine Parchments[]

Siege at Astral Academy[]

The Astral Academy shall suffer for never allowing me to seal my final spell!
~ Anastasia's echoing rant as Cornelius and co. return to the ruined academy

At the beginning of the game Professor Butternut reprimanded Cornelius and his friends for their latest failure in their exam when an explosion destroyed Arcane Repository. Watching the damage from the blast also scattered nine of spell parchments stored within with Professor Butternut attempted to secure them to no avail, Cornelius and co. came up with an idea to sneak out of the academy to do Professor Butternut a favor, hoping that their success in it would convince him to let them have the recovered parchments. Of course, it wasn't easy as not only each missing spell parchment ended up in the lair of formidable monsters in addition of creatures mutated by the ongoing magical waste disaster. Little did they knew both the explosion and portals from which majorities of mutated flores and fauna they fought against were masterminded by Anastasia herself.

Final Battle and Death[]

Against all odds, Cornelius and co. managed to recover missing spell parchments and returned to the Academy in time to see it overrun by Anastasia's forces. Pressing on, they heard Anastasia's rants over her mentors' decision to rob her of the chance to complete her spell book and graduate long ago which motivated her vengeance. The group soon came face-to-face against Anastasia herself, now a towering lich who have bonded her very being to six elemental statues placed at her chosen battleground. It was a difficult fight for Cornelius and co. but in the end, they managed to finally struck Anastasia down after destroying her elemental statues.

With Anastasia's threat gone, Professor Butternut praised Cornelius and co. for their part in recovering spell parchments and saving Astral Academy. However, he wisely stored the recovered parchments for safekeeping and dismiss them since in the end, they still have much to learn.

Quotes[]

Rudolfus: With a dangerous Lich on the run, maybe leaving the Academy was an oversight.
Selius: We'd be safer far away from the enraged undead sorceress.
~ Rudolfus and Selius alluding Anastasia as they already on their way for the missing spell parchments during level 2 of the game (The Sand in Your Shoes)
Selius: How did that Lich appear? What does she want with the Academy?
Rudolfus: She might be Anastasia, a Death magician who once studied at the Academy a long time ago.
Nim: Ah. So Academy created this problem.
~ Rudolfus deducting the lich who attacks the Academy being Anastasia during level 5 of the game (Wizards Don't Tan)
Rudolfus: That Lich Anastasia blew up the Arcane Repository too, the effects of which we see in all wildlife.
Nim: That was needlessly cruel of her.
Selius: That Anastasia sounds like... an interesting person.
~ Rudolfus deduces Anastasia being the one behind the explosion at Arcane Repository during level 9 of the game (To the Tundra!)
Selius: Was Anastasia vicious when she was alive?
Rudolfus: Other Death artist have said she was very determined to have more Death magic in school.
Nim: And ironically, she got raised herself.
~ Selius, Rudolfus, and Nim discussing what kind of person Anastasia was in life during level 13 of the game (Colder by the Hourglass)
Selius: How did Anastasia die? Was she slain by wizard?
Rudolfus: The rumours say she experimented with stolen spells, and ended up dead.
Nim: Oh. That is... relatable.
~ Selius, Rudolfus, and Nim about Anastasia's cause of death and illegal magical experiments during level 17 of the game (The Descent to Spring Valley)
Selius: One doesn't simply become a Lich. Who raised her?
Rudolfus: There was a dead-raising warlock in the Vault of the artefacts not long ago. Maybe he did it.
Nim: Ah, I had to clean the rubble he left behind.
~ Selius, Rudolfus, and Nim about a fiasco behind Anastasia's return from death which allowed her to become a lich during level 21 of the game (The Hot Pools)
Selius: The similarities between our quest and that of Anastasia's is a little unnerving.
Rudolfus: Then again, she was completely alone, but in company, we can resurrect each other.
Nim: And I would never poison innocent creatures.
~ An insight about Anastasia's personality as discussed by Selius, Rudolfus, and Nim during level 25 of the game (Holiday in the Highlands)
