The commander of the Subspace Army who uses Subspace Bombs to tear up this world. He was once the lord of this world, living on the floating Island of the Ancients with many robots-but the robots were taken hostage on Tabuu's orders. Now that their home's a bomb factory, the robots carry out their functions while enduring deep sadness caused by the loss of their colleagues.
~ The Ancient Minister's trophy description.

The Ancient Minister is the titular secondary antagonist of Super Smash Bros. Brawl's story mode "The Subspace Emissary".

He is the field commander of the Subspace Army and brings the World of Trophies into Subspace under the orders of Tabuu. His true identity is revealed to be Robotic Operating Buddy, (or R.O.B. for short) the leader of the R.O.B. Squad. Thus, he is able to control the R.O.B. Squad and their deployments of Subspace Bombs.

He is considered to be a tragic villain (an antagonist who does not truly intend to be a villain), as he truthfully regretted his actions of bringing the World of Trophies into Subspace under the orders of Tabuu and he was coerced into doing so.

Biography[]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

The Master Robot was once the leader of the robots living on the Isle of Ancients. One day, Tabuu showed up and ordered the robots to be his servants, threatening to use violence should they refuse. The Master Robot had no choice but to accept Tabuu's offer. Using the technology of their island, the robots made Subspace Bombs to bring parts of the World of Trophies into Subspace. In shame of being forced to follow Tabuu's bidding, the Master Robot took the disguise of the Ancient Minister.

The Ancient Minister first appeared in the Midair Stadium after Kirby, Mario, Peach, and Zelda defeated members of the Subspace Army. He drops a Subspace Bomb and pulls the stadium into Subspace before flying away. He is later seen at the Plain where Mario and Pit attempt to stop him, but failed.

He appears in the Battlefield Fortress, where he is chased by Marth and Meta Knight. Both also attempt to stop the Ancient Minister, but they also fail. Just before the minister could retreat, however, he gets ambushed by Ike's sudden Aether and is forced to retreat. He later pulls King Dedede's Castle into Subspace, along with the trophies of Dedede, Ness, and Luigi.

As he witnesses the continuous explosion of Subspace bombs and loss of his people, Ancient Minister slowly starts to feel guilt. He is soon encountered by Mario, Kirby, Pit, Link, and Yoshi, and tries to stop them by shooting at them. He then pulls the Wilds into Subspace.

The Ancient Minister is later encountered by Samus Aran and Pikachu at the Subspace Bomb Factory, but he shows no sign of wanting to fight, much to the former two's confusion. Soon, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Olimar, and Captain Falcon arrive at the Subspace Bomb Factory, but the Ancient Minister still does not intend to fight. Just then, a hologram of Ganondorf appears, and orders the other R.O.B.s to activate the Subspace bombs. However, having had enough of the sacrifices of his people, the Ancient Minister betrays the Subspace Army and stops the R.O.B.s from activating any more bombs. Angered by the Ancient Minister's betrayal, gannondorf brainwashes the R.O.B.s and forces them to activate the bombs. The Ancient Minister tries desperately to stop them, but they, under Ganondorf's orders, shoot their lasers at their master, causing him to burn. The heroes also try to stop the R.O.B.s, but no avail. Ganondorf's hologram disappears, but not before he sends Auroros to defeat the heroes. The Ancient Minister uses his laser to destroy them, and restores to his true R.O.B. form and fights against the Subspace Army.

After the battle, R.O.B. gets his people back to his side, but knowing they are still attached to the Subspace bombs and that they are unable to denote themselves from it, he decides to die with them, even refusing Diddy's offer to escape. However, he is forcefully dragged away from his people by Donkey Kong. Captain Falcon calls for his Falcon Flyer, and the heroes escape from the factory. They encounter Meta Ridley along the way, but they were able to defeat him and escape just before the Isle of the Ancients is destroyed by Subspace. R.O.B. later joins the rest of the heroes on their quest to defeat Tabuu.

A trophy of the Ancient Minister is unlocked after completing the Subspace Emissary.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

The Ancient Minister became a spirit by the powers of Galeem, and appears in the Mysterious Dimension sub-map in Dharkon's Dark Realm in "Adventure Mode: World of Light". He has become an ace neutral-type primary with two support slots. His spirit battle is against four R.O.B.s equipped with Bombers. They are very resilient to explosive attacks and the screen occasionally flips.
