The Ancient Pop Trolls are the overarching antagonists of DreamWorks' 38th full-length animated feature film, Trolls World Tour.
They are the ancestors of the modern Pop Trolls and were among the first Troll groups to harness the power of music. However, they felt that their music was superior, so they stole the strings in an attempt to erase all other forms of music. This, in turn, caused the divide between all of the Troll tribes.

Past[]
At some point, likely hundreds or thousands of years in the past, the original troll tribes either found or created the six strings. These strings were capable of playing whatever music the user desired. At some point, the trolls each appointed an elder to serve as the leader and ambassador for their tribe, with an unnamed Pop Troll taking up the occupation for the Pop Tribe.
While the tribes initially lived in peace, the Pop Trolls eventually grew to believe that their music was superior to the others, and thus should be the only music. Thus, they stole the strings from the other tribes. It is unclear what they were planning to do after this, though its possible that they were planning to brainwash, like Queen Barb, or even destroy the other troll species. In a desperate attempt to save their cultures, the other troll tribes each took their string from the Pop Trolls. Believing that the tribes could no longer live in peace after what happened, each tribe left each other and traveling far away.
Legacy[]
In the modern day, the Pop Trolls had covered up any information about their betrayal of the other trolls, even that other troll tribes existed. Queen Barb, who also believed that trolls couldn't coexist, tried to follow in the Pop Trolls footsteps by collecting every string in order to erase the other kinds of music. The current Pop ruler, Queen Poppy, was informed of the existence of the strings and the other troll tribes by her father. However, he left out crucial details, and it was only after meeting the Funk Trolls that she was given the full story.
