Anders is a major antagonist in the seventh season of The 100. The First Disciple of the faction known as the Disciples, he acts as the leader of the Disciples in the absence of Bill Cadogan.
Biography[]
Past[]
Not much is known about Anders' history. He is known to have personally mentored Orlando, a Disciple who rose to become a Level 12, one of the highest Disciple ranks there is. Personally training other Disciples is stated to be a highly-unusual move for Anders. After becoming First Disciple, Anders briefly awakened Bill Cadogan, the Disciples' Shepherd from cryo to report no luck in finding the Key or starting the Last War, something that each new First Disciple did every twenty years.
Capture of Octavia and Diyoza[]
While stranded on Skyring for ten years, Octavia Blake throws a message in a bottle through the Anomaly in the belief that it will reach her brother Bellamy on Sanctum. However, it instead reaches the Disciples' homeworld of Bardo where the contents of the message catch the interest of the Disciples. Anders sends a team to Bardo where they capture Octavia and Charmaine Diyoza, although Octavia is able to hide Diyoza's young daughter Hope.
Upon arrival on Bardo, Octavia is taken to the Disciples Memory-Capture (M-Cap) device where Levitt begins scanning her memories, learning of Octavia's history, including her encounters with the Flame which the Disciples knew as the Key that they are searching for. However, Octavia is rescued by a now-adult Hope with the help of Levitt just after her memories reveal that Clarke Griffin had used the Flame in order to destroy A.L.I.E. As Octavia returns to Sanctum without protection from a Disciple helmet, she loses all memory of her time away and is unable to warn anybody of the threat from the Disciples. Remaining behind in an attempt to rescue her mother, Hope is ultimately captured by the Disciples and interrogated.
Hunting Clarke Griffin[]
Mistakenly believing that Clarke still has the Flame in her head, Anders begins plotting to capture her and her closest friends. As Octavia has Hope's biometric code on her back, Anders forces her to take a tagging knife to send Octavia back to Bardo once Hope is pulled through, threatening Hope's mother in order to get her to comply. Once Hope is gone, Anders sends a unit of Disciples led by Captain Meredith to Sanctum to capture Clarke and kill Hope once her mission is complete. Emerging from the Anomaly on Sanctum, Hope tells Octavia, whose memory is restored by the Anomaly expanding to engulf her location that "he" has her mother before stabbing Octavia with the tagging knife, causing her to vanish through the Anomaly while Hope collapses.
The Disciples that Anders had sent capture Bellamy Blake and drag him through the Anomaly, but Gabriel Santiago, Echo and the amnesic Hope manage to kill their pursuers and travel through the closing Anomaly in search of their missing friends. Captain Meredith and his men manage to corner Clarke, but Raven Reyes uses a Disciple suit's cloaking device and weapon to kill Captain Meredith's forces. Using the suit's star map, Clarke and several of her friends begin traveling through the Anomaly in an effort to find and rescue their friends.
Upon Octavia's arrival on Bardo, Anders greets her personally and has Octavia returned to M-Cap once her wound is treated. However, when Bellamy arrives, he manages to kill his captors and take Conductor Doucette hostage in an effort to rescue his sister. Anders brings in Octavia to talk her brother down and Octavia offers to tell Anders everything that he wants to know if he will safely return Bellamy to Sanctum. After a moment of thought, Anders opens the Anomaly against Doucette's protests, but a wounded Disciple detonates a grenade, apparently killing both Bellamy and Doucette.
A week later, Gabriel, Echo and Hope arrive, having ambushed the Disciples that came to retrieve the imprisoned Orlando from Skyring. Caught up in a group of Disciples while searching for their friends, the three witness Anders giving a speech to the gathered Disciples and Hope has to be held back from an assassination attempt on him. From Anders' speech, Gabriel realizes that the Disciples came to Bardo through the Anomaly and not on the Eligius III colony ship as was previously believed. After rescuing Octavia and reuniting with the escaped Diyoza, the group is captured after Gabriel betrays them.
Closing in on the Key[]
After capturing Clarke's friends, Anders imprisons the women until they agree to join the Disciples in the Last War. To demonstrate what they will be up against, Anders shows Octavia, Echo, Hope and Diyoza the corpses of the Bardoans, crystalized by the Gen-9 bioweapon when they lost their Last War. At the same time, Anders reveals Orlando's suicide to Gabriel and offers him the chance to join the team studying the secrets of the Anomaly Stone which Gabriel accepts. Anders is left surprised by just how much Orlando didn't tell the group while training them for five years on Skyring. Anders personally oversees the training of the four women alongside Levitt, a rare move for Anders. After Hope fails her training, Echo suggests banishing her to Skyring in punishment.
Shortly thereafter, Clarke's group arrives on Bardo and takes the code-breaking team hostage. Elated to have the Key within reach, Anders awakens Bill Cadogan from cryo and informs the Shepherd of the good news. Cadogan trades himself for the freedom of the code-breaking team, leaving Anders and the other Disciples outside. After talking with Clarke, Cadogan has Anders send in the apparently fully-brainwashed Octavia, Echo and Diyoza who refuse to join their friends. Using her supposed control over the Flame, Clarke forces Cadogan and Anders to keep the Disciples out of their way. Anders later interrupts Cadogan and Gabriel's dinner and forces Gabriel to leave behind both Cadogan and his gun.
Death[]
Having only pretended to convert to the Disciples' side, Echo attempts to commit genocide by unleashing the Gen-9 bioweapon in the humidification systems of Bardo while Hope gets everyone else off of the planet. However, the group decides to stop Echo and succeed in talking her down. They are interrupted by an enraged Anders, backed up by several armed Disciples and Diyoza turns over Gen-9 to him. As the group is negotiating with Anders, Hope suddenly slits his throat, killing Anders and taking the bioweapon from his hand. Hope attempts to unleash Gen-9 herself, but Diyoza sacrifices herself to stop her daughter. As everyone else flees the room, both Diyoza and Anders' corpse are crystalized by Gen-9.
Legacy[]
Due to Clarke's group's control over the Flame, Anders' murder is not punished with Cadogan even giving them his own personal quarters. While treating a Disciple for PTSD from the grenade explosion that supposedly killed Bellamy, Levitt discovers from his memories that both Bellamy and Doucette had actually survived and were instead flung through the open Anomaly. However, instead of setting the Anomaly to Sanctum as Octavia had requested, Anders had instead opened it to Etherea, presumably to get Bellamy out of the way by stranding him somewhere almost impossible to return from.
Following Bellamy's return after more than two months trapped on Etherea, he reveals to Cadogan that the Flame has actually been destroyed, Bellamy's experiences on Etherea having converted him to the Disciple cause. No longer held back by Clarke's supposed control over the Flame, Cadogan intends to punish them for the deaths of Anders and all of the other Disciples killed by Clarke and her friends, but Bellamy convinces him to forgoe this if they can find and repair the Flame instead.
While talking with Cadogan, Bellamy attempts to discover how close he and Anders were. Cadogan reveals that most First Disciples only awaken him once every twenty years to tell him about their lack of progress on starting the Last War. Having met Anders more than once, Cadogan states that comparatively speaking, they were close. Cadogan later suggests that Doucette will make a fine replacement for Anders as First Disciple.
