| ~ Andre Richardson's most famous quote. |
Andre Richardson, later known as The Bartender, is the secondary antagonist of Sega's 2009 beat 'em up video game Yakuza 3. He also made his appearances in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
He was a former double agent working for CIA, as well as the leader of Black Monday organization. He was a ruthless man who determined to do any means to achieve his goals. However, after his presumed "death", he left both organizations and went to Hawaii, becoming the bartender of Revolve Bar.
He was voiced by Charles Glover in Yakuza 3. In later installments, he was voiced by Yusuke Shirooka in Japanese, and by Fred Tatasciore in the English dub.
Personality[]
In Yakuza 3, Andre Richardson was a cold-blooded man who was determined to do anything for his own gains, even if it meant harming others. He was also an intimidating guy who loved to mock his opponents. For instance, when he fought Kiryu, although he clearly understood Japanese (and was shown to speak it fluently in later installments), he still kept speaking in English just to confuse and distract him.
However, after his "death" and his arrival to Hawaii, he started to give up his merciless and cold-hearted attitude and started to become a much more affable person who enjoys a simple life as a local bartender. He is also known to be making a lot of friends in Honolulu, as seen on his Aloha Links profile. He also became a much more supportive figure who did not hesitate to help the heroes and other local citizens, especially towards Kiryu, the man who foiled his plans years ago.
History[]
Background[]
At some point, Richardson became a secret agent for the CIA's Far East Headquarters, which he partnered with the Japanese-American agent Joji Kazama, the twin brother of Shintaro Kazama. During later years, Richardson, among other corrupted CIA Agents, took his advantage of his position in order to form a criminal syndicate, specializing in arms trafficking. His operations eventually caused the crash of American stock market in 1987, naming the incident "Black Monday". The organization also used that name to name themselves.
As Black Monday leader[]
In the events of the game, he learned that the CIA had planned to expand their military base and use them as a ballistic missile defense system in Okinawa, which many locals rejected and protested against. Him and Joji Kazama then were assigned by the CIA to ensure both the base and the resort can be built. He then assigned Joji to shoot Daigo Dojima, causing him to be in coma state, so that their plan of building base would not be obstructed and intervened.
After that, he then planned to assassinate Kiryu, in order to get the base built at all cost. He travelled all the way to Tokyo to find him, but was defeated. He then arranged another assassination in the Millennium Tower, but they targeted Osamu Kashiwagi instead, failing to hit Kiryu another time.
At the end of the events, he then surrounded his guards in the Touto Hospital to lure Kiryu into his trap, so that he could eliminate the man who foiled his plans once and for all. He then fought Kiryu after the latter had defeated all of his guards, and got defeated again. After Kiryu had a fight with Mine, he then attempted to kill him, but was eventually dragged down and presumably died of fall damage.
Redemption and arrival to Hawaii[]
After getting presumably killed by Mine, he then gave up his position as a double agent and decided to start a new leaf in Hawaii. He then opened his own local bar in Honolulu called Revolve, where many local citizens as well as foreign visitors visited and befriended him. He also aided the heroes in their journey by providing them with his services, as well as a place to rest. He also took good care of Nancy, Ichiban's crawfish, and prevented her from possibly getting cooked by anyone else. He also introduced Ichiban to the Aloha Links app, where he can make friends and form bonds with them. He also made another appearance in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, where he started to help Goro Majima and other Goro Pirates crew members, by providing them with usual services like he did to other heroes in Infinite Wealth.
Trivia[]
- Although Richardson speaks English fluently, he was still a target of the popular broken English memes among the Yakuza community for mispronouncing roof as "ruff".
- He was also deliberately mistaken by the Yakuza community with Albert Wesker from Resident Evil franchise, for having the similar appearance as well as both of them being cold-blooded secret agents.
- His appearance and resurrection in Infinite Wealth raised concerns among fans that there will be another deceased character getting revived to become another bartender in the later installment.
