~ Andrew trying to justify raping Mandy Fowler. |
Andrew Drake is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "No Good Reason". He is a teenager who drugs and rapes his friend Mandy Fowler when she does not return his romantic feelings for her, and then leads a campaign of cyberbullying against her when she presses charges.
He was portrayed by Colton Ryan, who also portrayed Jed in Poker Face.
Early life[]
Andrew was raised by his mother, Denise. He is one of Mandy Fowler's classmates and oldest friends, having known her since they were both small children; Mandy refers to him as "like my brother". Andrew wants more from their relationship but is too shy and insecure to tell her how he feels, sensing (correctly) that she does not feel the same way. He nevertheless appears regularly in her video diary, hanging around her and her group of friends in the vain hope that she will someday return his feelings.
"No Good Reason"[]
One night, Andrew goes to a party with his and Mandy's friend group, with Mandy in attendance. He tries to kiss her, only for Mandy to back away from him and laugh at his clumsy attempts at seduction. His ego wounded, Andrew gets back at her by drugging her drink so she passes out; he then takes the unconscious girl into another room and rapes her. The rest of the partygoers, unaware of what has happened, writes words like "slut" and "whore" on Mandy while she is still unconscious, and then take pictures of her and put them on social media.
When Mandy wakes up and finds that she has been raped and humiliated by people she thought were her friends, she runs away from home, prompting her worried parents to contact the NYPD's Special Victims Unit. The SVU detectives question everyone who was at the party, including Andrew, who claims that he does not know who drew on her. They examine her social media, where they discover Mandy's latest vlog post, in which she accuses her friends of turning their backs on her after she was raped.
The detectives finally track Mandy down and persuade her to testify in court about her rape, even though she says she was too blacked out during the assault to know who raped her. DNA testing eventually identifies Andrew as the rapist, but he claims that he and Mandy had consensual sex. Meanwhile, Mandy's classmates begin viciously cyberbullying her, vandalizing her various social media with messages accusing her of lying about being raped and trying to ruin Andrew's life. She briefly decides not to testify in hopes that the problem will eventually go away, but Detective Amanda Rollins convinces her that testifying is the best way to reclaim her pride and stand up to the people who hurt her.
Max Rivera, one of Mandy's classmates who drew on her at the party, begins to feel guilty, and tells Rollins that what happened to her is his and Andrew's fault; he also says that Andrew likes Mandy "too much". SVU Lieutenant Olivia Benson and Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba examine Mandy's text messages and find an exchange between her and Andrew in which he complained of being "tired of trying to get you to like me". They bring in Andrew, with his mother in tow, for questioning, and he eventually breaks down and admits to raping her.
He then makes a deal with Barba to plead guilty to rape in the third degree, for which he will serve 18 months in prison and go on the sex offender registry. At his allocution hearing, Andrew apologizes to Mandy, and declares to all of her friends that she did nothing wrong and does not deserve to be bullied. He is then led away to begin serving his sentence.
