~ Andrew St. John. |
Andrew "Andy" St. John is one of the three main antagonists in "Starved For Help", the second episode of the first season of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead video game series.
Although at first he and his mother and brother appeared friendly towards Lee and his band of survivors, Andrew was eventually revealed to be someone who resorted to murder and cannibalism in an effort to stay alive during the zombie apocalypse.
He was voiced by Adam Harrington, who also voiced Lewis Dodgson in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Bigby Wolf and The Woodsman in The Wolf Among Us, another game by Telltale.
Personality[]
Andrew initially comes off as a warm, friendly, jovial, and good-willed man. He was willing to invite Lee and the Motel Survivors to his family's dairy, alongside his brother, offering a friendly exchange of food in exchange for gas. He acted sociable in a way that wasn't overly invasive, getting to know more about Lee while engaging in friendly banter. Andrew also seemed kind towards Clementine and Duck, fixing their dairy's swing for them to play on should Lee not do it himself.
However, Andrew's friendliness is a mere facade that hides his twisted nature, being a manipulative and deranged cannibal alongside his family. He shows no remorse for their inhumane practice of butchering people and eating human meat. When Lee had discovered that the St. Johns had cut Mark's legs off in order to serve at dinner, Andrew merely justified that Mark would have died anyway, despite his arrow wound not being that serious, let alone fatal. He also threatened Clementine and took her hostage after their secret was exposed, having no qualm over slaughtering the motel survivors as food, including their two children.
Despite their horrid actions, Andrew still loved his family dearly and was genuinely devastated upon learning of their deaths, to the point of falling to his knees and weeping while he begs Lee to finish their fight. Furthermore, while he was not above threatening Clementine or Duck, Andrew will admit that he doesn't want to hurt Duck while holding the boy hostage should Lee remain silent, proving that not all of his humanity was completely gone.
Biography[]
Andrew along with his younger brother, Danny, he lived and worked on their parents' dairy farm somewhere near or in Macon, Georgia. Andrew was the firstborn of his parents where he took on more responsibility. He looked after his younger brother while helping his father work on the farm. After high school, Andrew went to college and graduated with an unknown degree however, he returned home to help his mother, Brenda, look after the farm following their father's death.
By the start of the apocalypse, once word of the chaos had reached the dairy, most of their farmhands left to find their families and the ones who remained behind were all killed by the Walkers. Andrew was left by himself alongside his mother and younger brother. The walkers also succeeded in killing most of their livestock, save for their award-winning cow Maybelle. The St. Johns managed to secure their dairy as a safe area, wiring up an electric fence powered by gasoline.
At some point however, the St. Johns began to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. They would hunt people in the forest by setting bear traps and later butcher them in their family's barn. The St. Johns would at times make trades with other travellers, giving provisions such as bread and meat in exchange for gas to power their fence (though Andrew's dialogue implies that some travellers could have been tricked and slaughtered for meat as well).
He is first seen walking past the Travelier Motel with his brother and ends up inviting the group to the dairy farm. Eventually Lee Everett, Clementine, and the others will stop by the St. John Dairy in hopes to find some food and shelter from the walkers.
At the dairy, Lee and Mark learns that Andrew is in charge of the maintenance of generator that helps keep the place safe from the walkers. He asks them to take a walk around the perimeter, and remove any dead walkers entangled in the fence. As Lee and Mark are working, the power to fence is turned back on as they are on the wrong side of it, in spite of Andrew's promises to keep it shut down, and they are ambushed by bandits. Narrowly escaping, and with Mark getting an arrow in the shoulder in the process, him and Lee makes it back to the farm proper, where Andrew feigns surprise, claiming that he thought Mark's yell was the all-clear signal, despite the power being turned back on before he screamed.
After unsuccessfully searching out the Bandits with Danny, Lee returns, and finds out that Kenny is growing suspicious about a locked room in the back of the barn, thinking the St. Johns might be hiding something there. Andrew notices their interest in the room, and Lee can question him more or less directly about it, but he just claims there are tools in it and that it is locked to keep the bandits from getting their hands on them. Determined to find out what is in the room, Lee distracts Andrew by sabotaging the generator, and removing the lock with a multi-tool. Just as he opens the doors, revealing a bloody slaughter room, Andrew returns and tells him to come to dinner, and gives dodgy responses to Lee's questions about the room.
Back in the house, Lee excuses himself, and investigates the second floor, where he finds a barely living Mark with both his legs cut off, revealing the St. Johns to be cannibals. Announcing his findings to the group which have assembled for dinner, Andrew takes Clementine as a hostage, provoking Lee's anger, before he is knocked out by Danny, and locked inside the freezer room.
After escaping from the freezer, Kenny and Lee's attempt to sneak up on Danny is interrupted by Andrew, who tells Danny to finish the prisoners off, before he goes back inside the house to check on Brenda.
Later, having dealt with Danny and Brenda; Lee runs into Andrew who has taken Duck as a hostage, he accuses Lee of ruining everything for him and his family, he then shoots and wounds Kenny as he attempts to free Duck. He is however distracted when either Doug targets his laser pointer at his eyes, or Carley takes a shot at him and grazes his ear. Lee goes for Andrew's rifle, and squares off against him in a hand-to-hand fight with Andrew at first having the upper hand as he attempts to murder Lee by shoving his face into the electrified fence, but he is either shot at the last second and wounded in the shoulder by Lilly or stopped by Lee breaking free (depending on whether Lee helped save or kill Larry). Lee then viciously beats Andrew with his bare hands, almost killing him before he stops by his own account or is told to do so by Doug/Carley, and walks away.
Andrew then gets up on his knees with great difficulty, and angrily challenges him to come back and finish what he started, telling him that he "ain't shit", and threatens him with the wrath of his mother and brother. Lee can then imply or outright state that his family is dead or dying, which causes Andrew to break screaming down in sorrow. Lee can then decide to either kill him by kicking him into the fence/shooting him in the head or spare him and leave him to his fate as walkers overrun his farm.
Death[]
- Killed by Lee Everett (determinant): After Lee's fight with Andy, he has a choice to let him live or kill him. If he spares him, Lee will walk away and Andy will beg him to come back and fight him. He will then get devoured by walkers with one being his own mother zombified. If the player does not stall while punching Andy, before the scene appears with the group watching Lee beat Andy, choosing to kill Andy will have Lee kick him into the electric fence frying him to death. If the player stalls while punching Andy, he will flip Lee over and start beating him. Once Lee dodges he pushes him into the electric fence and grabs his rifle. In this case, choosing to kill Andy will have Lee shoot him in the head with his rifle.
- Killed by Carley (caused, determinant): If Carley is saved in Episode 1, she shoots Andy in the neck while he was holding Duck hostage, stunning him and caused Lee to save Duck and start the fight with him that led to his death.
- Killed by Doug (caused, determinant): If Doug is saved in Episode 1, he'll point a laser pointer at Andy's face while he was holding Duck hostage, stunning him and caused Lee to save Duck and start the fight with him that led to his death.
Victims[]
- David Parker (caused or indirectly caused): David getting stuck in the bear trap with no release hatch in the woods led to his death. It is highly likely that Andy or another member of the St. John family set up this trap to catch humans to eat. Originally, if Lee didn't free David from the trap, Mark would get killed by the Bandits and David would be dinner instead. This confirms that the St. Johns set up the trap, however this whole scenario was scrapped.
- Travis (indirectly caused): David getting stuck in the bear trap in the first place leads to Travis getting devoured by walkers or accidentally shot by Mark.
- Mark (caused): Andy and the rest of his family were involved in cutting off Mark's legs and serving them for dinner.
- Larry (indirectly caused): Andy and the rest of his family throwing Lee, Kenny, Lilly, Clementine and Larry in the meat locker causes Larry's death when he has a heart attack and is put down to prevent reanimation.
- Numerous unnamed people that the St. Johns killed and ate to survive.
