Andries Martiens is the main antagonist of the 2006 Belgian-Dutch horror film Slaughter Night. He was a serial killer who initially murdered seven children, in order to use their heads for a voodoo ritual which would allow him to travel in and out of Hell. However, after being caught by police, he was given a choice to be hanged or become a fireman. He chose the latter and despite surviving the methane explosion, he was still executed for his crimes.
He was portrayed by Robert Eleveld.
Biography[]
Andries Martiens was born sometime before 1857, in the country of Holland. While it's not elaborated on much, Martiens' parents were very abusive to him, so much so, that he joined the Navy to get away from them. He returned when his parents died, in order to claim the fortune that he thought they'd leave for him, but they just left him a music box. Determined to find their fortune, Martiens became obsessed with the occult and studied black magic and voodoo. On a trip to the Western Netherlands, Martiens learned of a sacrificial ritual that would allow someone to travel in and out of Hell. Realizing that he could talk to his parents and learn where they hid their fortune, Martiens started working on the ritual.
The ritual required 8 human heads, so Martiens kidnapped and murdered 7 children in Limburg. When he kidnapped his last child, he dropped one of his voodoo necklaces, which allowed police to make the connection and track him down. In the process of decapitating his last victim, the police interrupted him and he was forced to flee. He didn't get far as the police inspector shot him off his horse, and he was apprehended. Afterwards, he was given a choice to either: be hanged or become a fireman. A fireman being a convicted criminal who was tasked with igniting the methane in the mines, in order to clear it out and keep innocent miners from being blown up. If the fireman survived, he was allowed to go free. Martiens survived, but the police, seeing his crimes as too heinous, executed him anyways.
Slaughter Night[]
In the present, a group of young adults go on a tour of the mine, but are trapped underground when the tour guide forgets to tell the supervisor about it. While the guide tries to climb a rickety old ladder to the surface, the group leader, Kristel Lodema decides to hold a Ouija board session to try and contact her father. However, Andries' spirit awakens instead and possesses Susan. She runs off after assaulting Liesbeth with a rock, but they believe her behavior was because of the drugs that Paul gave her. After the ladder he's climbing collapses, the possessed Susan decapitates the tour guide and puts his head on a pike.
