Lazuli, better known as Android 18, is a main character in the Dragon Ball franchise. She is an android created by Dr. Gero. She has blonde hair and a stoic attitude. Unlike Androids 19 and 16, 18 and her twin brother Android 17 were originally humans turned into androids by Dr. Gero. She starts off as a villain through the Android Saga but later become a supporting character in the Cell Saga.
In Japanese, she was voiced by Miki Ito in all appearances. In English, she has been voiced by Meredith McCoy, Willow Johnson, Farrell Spence, Sharon Mann, Jennifer Bain, Colleen Clinkenbeard, and Tamara Ryan.
Personality[]
Android 18 has a confident and rather arrogant temperament, too convinced by her own power, this is seen as she does not take seriously the Z-Fighters at the time weaker than her and her fellow Androids, in particular the arrogant Vegeta always too sure of his strength. Although she is a brutal fighter, she is not a murderous sadist like her future counterpart, still having a little humanity. Her programmed goal of eliminating Goku is for her only a game that she follows only for fun. She also has a typical teenage attitude, namely a critical taste for fashion and likes money. Despite her arrogance, 18 is capable of feeling fear and confusion, as when seeing Piccolo and Vegeta have become much stronger in a short time and being frightened by Cell.
Following her expulsion from Cell's body and the temporary death of Goku, 18 began to slowly change for the better. Although she seemed indifferent to Krillin's wish to have her explosive implants removed, she actually appreciated the gesture. Likewise, she permanently abandoned her intended goals, starting to act more like a human, though she still retained her trusting, judgmental nature and monetary greed. Seven years later, 18 has become a caring mother and devoted wife, albeit one who takes the reins with Krillin. Although now friends with Goku and Co., she sometimes shows herself to be exasperated by the immaturity of Trunks and Goten, the only other children around her.
Her special relationship with Krillin began from their first meeting, instead of facing him in a losing battle for him, she only gave him a kiss on the cheek, although it seemed mostly childish. Later, when Krillin destroyed the deactivation remote, 18 began to see him in a different light since she didn't understand why he did it. Later, when Krillin made a wish for her and 17, she was initially angry that Krillin had the wrong idea since he didn't know that 17 was 18's brother, but she still showed that she was flattered by Krillin's feelings for her. As a result, the two ended up getting married and having a daughter together.
As for his relationship with her twin, 18 is not as laid back as 17, the latter looking more for fun compared to his sister wanting above all satisfaction. Despite this, they are very close, supporting each other. After not seeing each other for a decade, the two twins remained as united as before, fighting as a pair during the Tournament of Power. As in the past, 18 remained the mature of the two while 17 became even more laid back, or more human as he says. While 17 was about to fall from the arena, 18 sacrificed herself so that he could continue the fight, showing her great confidence in his brother.
Biography[]
Dr. Gero awakened Androids 17 and 18 to fight the Z Fighters. However, they did not like being controlled. After 17 killed Dr. Gero, 18 awakened Android 16, and they left in search of Goku. Vegeta followed them and challenged 18 to a battle. At first he appeared to be winning.
18 revealed she was toying with Vegeta, and broke his arm. Trunks entered the battle, but 18 broke his sword. Unlike their future counterparts, the androids were not interested in killing anyone except Goku, so they left. Before they did, 18 kisses Krillin, which made him fall in love with her.
Android 18 emerges from Vegeta's Big Bang Attack
When the androids stole a food truck and drove it to Goku's house, 18 thought that driving was a waste of time when flying there would be quicker. When they arrived at Kame House, Piccolo fought 17 until Cell showed up to absorb the androids. After absorbing 17, Cell tried to absorb 18, who threatened to self destruct. When Tien attacks Cell, 18 was able to escape with 16. After Goku got Tien and Piccolo to safety, Cell searched for 18 until Vegeta appeared and fought him, but made a deal with him so Cell could absorb 18. Krillin was assigned to use a remote to destroy 18, but was unable to do it, as he was in love with her. He crushed the remote. 18, 16, and Krillin fought Cell, but only Trunks was able to damage him. In the end, Cell opened his tail up and absorbed 18, transforming into his perfect form.
During the Cell Games Saga, Cell received a devastating injury from Gohan, and threw up Android 18, reverting back to his second form. Afterward, it was revealed that Krillin was in love with 18. She was no longer evil by now, albeit she - unlike her counterpart in Future Trunks' timeline - was never evil, rather being measured, if brutal, in response to threats, but otherwise aloof and indifferent about everyone except her brother, 17, and to a lesser extent, 16.
Seven years later, Krillin was married to 18 and had a daughter named Marron; while she remained outwardly aloof as before, inside she was a deeply loving wife and caring mother. 18 entered the World Martial Arts tournament, and in the finals, made a deal with Hercule: She let him win, and he give her twice the prize money; his "winning punch" being so weak to her that she almost reneged on the deal out of annoyance, but she still honoured it.
After going to Kami's Lookout with several of the other Z Fighters' friends and family, 18 was turned into chocolate by Super Buu, along with most of the others, and eaten. She was wished back with the Dragon Balls near the end of the final battle.
In alternate timeline Dragon Ball GT, she helped Goku defeat Super 17.
In Dragon Ball Super, she would participate as a member of the Universe 7 team in the Tournament of Power; she reunited with her brother, 17, for the first time in over a decade, however, both were nonplussed about it - even so, in the tournament, they were able to coordinate perfectly in spite of years of separation.
In Super Hero, she helped in the battle against Cell Max; while she was horrified that someone remade Cell, she kept her composure in the fight. Afterwards, she showed open animosity against the android's creator, Dr. Hedo, when he asked to join Capsule Corporation, but was held back by Krillin - although Krillin became a prop in a tug-of-war between 18 and Gamma No. 1.
Trivia[]
- When 18 defeats Vegeta, she becomes the first character to defeat a Super Saiyan, unless one includes Android 19 in his fight against Goku, whose outcome was decided because of a heart disease Goku had.
- 17 and 18 were kidnapped by Gero and made into androids to serve his vendetta against Goku; it is very possible that it was this crime against them that made them hate Gero enough to kill him the first chance they got.
- In Dragon Ball Forever's poll of the top 20 best characters, 18 was voted number 10 by Japanese fans. This makes her the highest voted female on the list by a wide margin.
- In the Game Boy Advance game Supersonic Warriors, Android 18 is hinted to dislike driving solely because of Android 17's insistence in driving around aimlessly without anything better to do.
- In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Chi-Chi says Android 18 is the eldest out of her and her twin brother, Android 17. She also expresses jealousy over the fact that 18 doesn't age.
- In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, when defeated by Android 13, Android 13 tells her "...respect your elders, Boy!" despite her being a female, due to her and Android 17 sharing the same special interaction quote.
- 18 is the older twin.
- According to Goku, 18 and 17 have the same eyes, a trait that 17 attributes to them being twins.
