Andy King is the main antagonist of the 2007 found footage horror film Exhibit A. He starts out as a regular fun-loving dad who eventually slips into madness as his financial situation worsens, becoming highly abusive.

Biography[]

Wanting to get his family a beachside house in the country, Andy King promises his wife and children that he will earn his promotion. They visit the house and his family takes a liking to it, except for his daughter Julie who secretly has a crush on her neighbor, Claire. Later on his birthday, he falsely announces to his family that he got the promotion despite the fact it went to his coworker Ray, who is now helping them sell their house.

Attempting to compensate for his actual lack of money, Andy employs landscapers to dig a pool in the backyard to raise the price of the house. His wife, Sheila, is angered both because he didn't consult her first, and also because Julie has a fear of water. Andy attempts to defend his decision, but Sheila leaves before he can. That night, Julie thinks she sees Joe smoking in the backyard, but finds out it's Andy instead. Concerned, she begins recording his behavior.

While digging the pool, Andy attempts to make more money by filming a home video to show on TV. Andy makes his son, Joe, fall into the pool multiple times but is never satisfied by the result. When Joe refuses to injure himself further, Andy lashes out and chases him with a shovel while calling him a disappointment. He attempts to salvage the situation with Julie, but she runs inside before he can justify his behavior.

Later, Andy comes home shaken and covered in blood. He vaguely explains to Sheila that Ray sustained a facial injury, not specifying what actually happened. That night, Julie films Andy in the shed desperately redeeming scratch-off tickets and becoming more and more enraged, beating on furniture. He leaves and Julie finds a trash bag full of scratch-off tickets. Andy sees her but fails to recognize her and loses sight of her.

The next day, Andy spontaneously throws a barbecue where Ray confronts him about assaulting him for his job position. Andy attempts to reason with him, but he drives away first. Angered, Andy tries to brush off what just happened and has a public breakdown. Before anyone can leave, Andy tries to get Julie to show the guests their home videos, but Julie resists in order to hide the footage of his erratic behavior. He ends up playing it in front of his family.

The next day, Andy takes control of the camera and records as his family leaves him. Before leaving, Julie states that she understands why he did what he did and that she forgives him. Andy takes this as validation and decides to pettily expose his other family members' secrets, like finding a dildo in Sheila's drawer and a video on Joe's phone of Claire giving him fellatio. He also finds Julie's pictures of Claire. Later, the police attempt to talk to him, but assume nobody is home. Andy also confesses to the camera that it was him who assaulted Ray.

That night, Andy enters his wife's home and triggers the smoke alarm. He then forces Sheila and Joe to watch the videos he recorded, but his attempt to get them back proves fruitless. He locks the doors before his family can leave, but they eventually get into the garage and lock him out. At this point, Julie wakes up. Andy attempts to justify himself to her before pushing her in the pool, prompting her to learn how to swim on the spot. After his attempted drowning of Julie, his family leaves.

The next morning, Andy drinks and takes pills in an attempt to overdose. Julie comes down and Andy tells her to go back upstairs, insinuating that he will die soon. Julie is oblivious and embraces him. During this, Andy ends up suffocating and seemingly killing her. He goes upstairs and beats Joe to death before dragging him downstairs and laying him down next to Julie. Sheila wakes up and attempts to escape, but Andy overpowers and kills her. He lays her next to the children and embraces them, accepting his death. He knocks the camera over, and it lands on Julie's face. The lens fogs as she breathes, revealing that she is still alive. Andy presumably dies later.
