| ~ AZ about Ange and the danger it presents to the city. |
Ange, also known as Ange Floette, is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2025 video game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
It is an ancient machine originally developed by AZ and hidden within Prism Tower, initially meant to distribute Life Energy, until a malfunction caused it to go berserk and threaten to destroy Lumiose City, forcing its creator to seek assistance in shutting it down.
Appearance[]
Ange's original appearance, fitting for the Kalos Region being based on the real-life nation of France, and Lumiose City on Paris, is derived from the Eiffel Tower, replacing the antenna rods adorning the Eiffel's peak with a large round disc in their place, serving as its control panel and antenna. After 2000 years of being re-modeled and renovated, however, its iron lattice frame has been covered over with glass windows and metal plating, giving it a more contemporary appearance.
Once Ange Floette awakens, it immediately undoes all of the tower's renovations and reverts to its original iron lattice frame. Replacing Ange's original antenna is a large, black flower bulb, serving as both its "head" and the origin point for its roots, which weave throughout the frame, sprawl out across Centrico Plaza and spread into the surrounding districts. Multiple close replicas of Floette's Eternal Flower can be found sprouting from its body, while the flower bulb, when opened, resembles Ange's life-stealing counterpart, the Ultimate Weapon. This flower is much smaller than the Weapon, but demonstrates the same destructive potential.
Following Ange's defeat, the remains of Prism Tower were reclaimed by nature, becoming covered with vegetation. Rather than restoring the tower to its "contemporary" form, the decision was made to plant a garden at its feet, which would become known as Wild Zone 20.
Powers and Abilities[]
As Ange:[]
- Life Energy Distribution: Ange's original purpose was to collect and distribute Life Energy to its surroundings, granting the people affected by it extended lifespans and increased vitality. Ange was designed to bond with the Eternal Flower Floette so that its life granting functions could be used safely.
- Rogue Mega Evolution: Due to leaking Mega Power in high concentrations without Floette to control it, Ange is able to force Mega Evolution into wild Pokémon against their will, increasing their power greatly, but also bringing out a destructive urge to run rampant and attack anyone/anything in sight.
As Ange Floette:[]
- Eternal Flower Floette's abilities: Ange has access to Floette's abilities while they are merged together. This includes Floette's most dangerous attack:
- Light of Ruin: fires both in raining bursts throughout its boss battle and as a single, powerful strike as a last resort when defeated. This final Light of Ruin blast was powerful enough that it would recreate the impact of the Ultimate Weapon.
- Partial Sentience: When controlling Floette, Ange gains some degree of self awareness. It acknowledges the Pokémon and their Trainers who are attempting to shut them down, makes self-preservation its first priority, and retaliates by sending waves of Rogue Mega Pokémon to attack them, deciding to take matters into its own roots when they get too close to it.
- Phytokinesis: Ange Floette's body is composed almost entirely of its roots, several ends of which bear flowers resembling the appearance of Floette's flower. It additionally sprouts two flowers at ground level in front of it, which serve as the main targets for the Player to defeat during the battle.
- Mass Rogue Mega Evolution: Now fully awake and uncontrollable, Ange's Mega Power has been amplified to dangerous levels, allowing it to cause Rogue Mega Pokémon to appear en masse.
Personality[]
Ange demonstrates very little personality throughout the majority of the game, appropriate given that it is a 2000-year-old machine sealed within a tower.
After its transformation into Ange Floette and becoming self-aware, Ange becomes extremely violent, attacking anyone who gets too close to it. It also proves to be persistent and a sore loser, attempting to decimate Lumiose City with a final attack even after being defeated in battle by the combined efforts of the Player and Zygarde.
History[]
Past[]
3000 years ago, AZ's partner Pokémon, a Floette, was killed in a war with a neighboring region. Believing she had left their world too soon, he built a machine that would drain the life energy from other Pokémon to resurrect her. It worked, and Floette was returned to life; unwilling to forgive the world that had hurt her, AZ re-built his machine into the Ultimate Weapon, putting an end to the war by becoming destruction incarnate. Floette, knowing that her newfound life came at the cost of so many others', abandoned AZ in disgust. As a consequence of also having been exposed to the Ultimate Weapon's power, AZ, like Floette, was also granted a lifespan extension; for him, however, this became a curse. Without his beloved Pokémon at his side, he had nothing left to live for, yet he could live on for thousands of years into the future. He soon set out on a journey with only one goal in mind: find his Floette.
1,000 years later, in the midst of his search, AZ encountered a "man of great power" who asked for his help with a way to protect Kalos when in crisis. Instead of building another machine to destroy life, AZ decided to create a machine to share the eternal life he gave to his Floette. Following its completion, he christened it "Ange", and embedded it into a large tower located at the center of the Kalos region, known in the present as "Prism Tower".
Over the next 2,000 years, Prism Tower became the signature landmark of the Kalos region and Lumiose City was built around the monument. Over time, and multiple rennovations, Prism Tower became a more high-tech futuristic tower, leaving Ange forgotten and buried behind it. In present day, Prism Tower served as the Pokémon Gym of Lumiose City.
Pokémon X and Y[]
During the events of the game, AZ's distant descendant Lysandre's planned to use both Ange and the Ultimate Weapon in tandem to wipe out the population of Kalos except for Team Flare. However, he learned that Ange's awakening necessitated the presence of a Floette with an Eternal Flower, who hadn't been seen in thousands of years; thus, he was forced to write Ange out of his scheme and use only the Ultimate Weapon. Following the re-activation and firing of the Ultimate Weapon, which resulted in its presumed self-destruction and the death of Lysandre, the excess energy emitted triggered Ange's own awakening. Due to being awoken pre-maturely, it began to slowly charge on Mega Power; without Floette to regulate this power, it eventually started leaking out over the five years that followed, drawing wild Pokémon to Lumiose City, and causing those capable of Mega Evolution to begin doing so at random; a phenomenon dubbed "Rogue Mega Evolution".
A short time after Lysandre's attempt to use the Ultimate Weapon was stopped, Floette returned to AZ having forgiven her owner. AZ initially planned to put Ange to use after re-uniting with Floette; however, he deemed it unnecessary as they were now living in a time of peace. During this time, he instead purchased an abandoned hotel in Lumiose, renovated it, re-christened it "Hotel Z", intending for it to be his final residence, and began making a small name for himself.
AZ presumably witnessed Ange discharging Mega Power at some point, and came to realize that it had began to awaken, along with the danger it posed if left un-attended. At 3000 years of age, however, he knew that his extended lifespan was soon to expire, and he was now incapable of taking Pokémon battling as seriously as he once could. Thus, he began his search for a Pokémon Trainer who could take his place and shut Ange down before it could become a serious threat.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A[]
Prologue[]
Ange's continued leaking of Mega Power caused a major influx of wild Pokémon into Lumiose, in response the mayor started an urban redevelopment plan so the city can accomodate the increased population of Pokémon. A company named Quasartico Inc. was contracted to carry out the redevelopment of Lumiose. Jett and Vinnie, President and Secretary of Quasartico Inc. bore witness to Prism Tower leaking Mega Power, before being warned by AZ that the strongest Mega Evolution user had to be found. This prompted them to establish the Z-A Royale, a competition meant to invite powerful trainers from across and beyond Kalos to travel to Lumiose City to claim the prize of any one wish being granted to whomever could reach Rank A, so long as it was within Quasartico's power to fulfill.
During this time, AZ met a young Trainer named Taunie/Urbain, who had travelled to the City in search of information regarding their deceased mother; during their search, he offered them long-term tenancy at Hotel Z in exchange for their help with the property's upkeep. During their stay, Taunie/Urbain met and befriended Lida and Naveen, two more Pokémon Trainers who each have their own reason for travelling to the City. Together, they formed "Team MZ".
The Z-A Royale/Rogue Mega Evolution[]
The player character, named Paxton/Harmony, arrived in Lumiose City for some sight-seeing, quickly encountering their new friend and rival, Taunie/Urbain. They quickly lost track of the time, with night falling, the Z-A Royale starting, and a Battle Zone manifesting around them. They attempted to make their way to a hideout, but are ambushed by several Z-A Royale participants, who claim anyone in the Battle Zone is fair game for a battle, even if they aren't actively participating; fortunately for Paxton/Harmony and Taunie/Urbain, they were saved by a Floette with a black flower, who fired its Light of Ruin attack as a warning shot to scare off the aggressors. They continued to the hideout, revealed to be Hotel Z, and were introduced to AZ, its owner, who offered them one of his rooms. Taunie/Urbain introduced Paxton/Harmony to their Team MZ team-mates, before inducting them into the team themselves, and officially registering them in the Z-A Royale.
After escalating through a few ranks in the Royale, and meeting multiple City residents, including Assistant Pokémon Professor Mable and Detective Emma, they encountered a mysterious Pokémon, which Emma identified as Zygarde; it led Paxton/Harmony to a rooftop with a wild Absol surrounded by a purple aura, then disappeared before Emma arrived. AZ followed, having been alerted to Absol's crisis by Floette, and warned that the wild Pokémon was about to fall victim to Rogue Mega Evolution. He explained that the only way to counter a Rogue Mega Pokémon is to wield Mega Evolution themselves; a battle ensued after he loaned them his Lucario and a Key Stone to this end.
Paxton/Harmony promptly subdued the Rogue Mega Pokémon, before returning to Hotel Z for the night. The day following, Paxton/Harmony and Taunie/Urbain were called to Quasartico's office by Vinnie, who explained that the Z-A Royale was designed to find powerful trainers who could assist in dealing with the Rogue Mega Pokémon epidemic, and offered them to significantly accelerate their ranking in the competition if they could defeat him in battle.
Following their promotions, Team MZ dedicated themselves to dealing with Rogue Mega Pokémon incidents while continuing to climb the Ranks in the Royale, meeting many fellow competitors who they would befriend. One night Zygarde approached Paxton/Harmony once more, who this time offered them a simple, unremarkable pebble. They also encountered a mysterious man who introduced himself only as "L". L had no memory of his past, and was acting as a messenger for Zygarde. L warned Team MZ that AZ's past sins would soon bring a threat of cataclysmic proportions to Lumiose City.
Team Flare Noveau[]
During their mission to claim their final rank promotion, the player came across Grisham and Griselle, two Ex-Team Flare Grunts who desired to clean Team Flare's reputation after Lysandre's crimes. They blamed AZ for driving Lysandre to madness, alleging that he never would have had an Ultimate Weapon to fire if AZ hadn't built it. Grisham insisted Paxton/Harmony venture into Lysandre Labs, their abandoned Lumiose City hideout, to discover the truth for themselves. While exploring the lab, they encountered L once again, who began to recall fragments of his past, including his previous identity as Lysandre.
L explained that Zygarde saved his life when his past attempt to fire the Ultimate Weapon was botched. The amnesia he suffered from was a side effect of his exposure to the Ultimate Weapon's energy. Zygarde recognized Ange as a threat to the ecosystem and wished to stop it, but it had exhausted its power to mitigate the impact of the Ultimate Weapon five years prior and now was working with L to gather the Zygarde Cells that compose its body so it could recover its full strength.
AZ, knowing that Paxton/Harmony had learned of his past sins, made the decision to reveal Prism Tower's true nature as Ange to Team MZ, explaining its origin, connection to himself, and the true reason for the Z-A Royale's creation; only a trainer who able to master the Mega Evolution phenomenon could possess the ability to successfully Mega Evolve his Floette, drain the excess Mega Power leaking from Ange to bring it under control, and prevent it from becoming the second coming of the Ultimate Weapon. He expressed remorse that once again the youth of Kalos had to stop a disaster caused by his past mistakes, wishing he could shut Ange down himself, but regrettably he was now too old and fragile to be able to take Pokémon combat seriously like he once could, begging Team MZ to stop Ange before it could lose control.
Prism Tower's Dark Turn[]
The next night, however, AZ's worst fear was realized, as Ange reached a critical point of Mega Power that caused a major tremor around the city. He warned that if left alone, the resulting explosion of Mega Power across the city would result in wild Pokémon Mega Evolving en masse. Team MZ (plus Floette), after re-assuring him that they won't let that happen, made their way to Centrico Plaza, preparing to seize control of Ange; Taunie/Urbain, however, recalled that they never properly determined who the strongest trainer in Lumiose was, given that they both made it to Rank A, prompting a final battle against them to determine who will take control of Ange; regardless of the outcome, the Taunie/Urbaine insisted on being the trainer to Mega Evolve Floette, arguing that Paxton/Harmony was the one chosen by Zygarde, and needed to work with it to shut Ange down if it went completely rogue.
Operation: Protect Lumiose![]
Following Floette's Mega Evolution, she carried Taunie/Urbain to Ange's control panel at the top of Prism Tower; when they attempt to take control, however, a malfunction instead resulted in Ange swallowing Floette, shedding the tower's metal-plate-and-glass structure and transforming into the titanic Ange Floette, before over-running Centrico Plaza with its roots. Now overflowing with Mega Power and flooding Lumiose with it as AZ forewarned, the rest of Team MZ quickly found themselves under attack from Rogue Mega Pokémon, although they fend them off with relative ease, after which Taunie/Urbain, still trapped atop the tower, spotted Zygarde waiting for the player on a rooftop in one of the plazas.
Surmising that it meant to offer Paxton/Harmony a final test before fighting at their side, the player made their way to Zygarde, assisted by all the allies and friends they made throughout the Z-A Royale to battle against the hordes of Rogue Mega Pokémon attempting to impede their progress. Despite their onslaught, Paxton/Harmony succeded in reaching Zygarde and L, who had gathered all but one of the Zygarde cells needed to restore its true power; the last cell was revealed to have been hiding in Paxton/Harmony's satchel the entire time, allowing the Order Pokémon to assume its Complete Form and assist them in the ensuing showdown against Ange.
Final Defeat[]
After a long battle against Paxton/Harmony and Zygarde, Ange was dealt a fatal attack, putting an end to its rampage. Unwilling to concede defeat, however, it began charging a massive Light of Ruin whose destructive power would be on par with the Ultimate Weapon. Sensing the increasing desperation, the pebble Zygarde gave the player revealed itself to be a Zygardite, allowing it to Mega Evolve. While doing so, however, Ange fired its Light of Ruin into the sky, but Mega Zygarde intercepted the blast with its ultimate move "Nihil Light". Completely out of options, drained of energy, and having sustained too much damage from Zygarde's attacks, Ange collapsed and degraded into nothing, its only remnant being the Prism Tower frame it used as a shell. AZ witnessed Ange's desperate final gambit fail, offering Team MZ his gratitude from the comfort of his hotel's rooftop; he passed away shortly afterward, now able to rest with the knowledge that Lumiose is safe.
Legacy[]
Fitting that overseeing its destruction was his final act in life, AZ's gravestone was a scaled-down replica of Ange's control panel. In the days following his burial in the Dormez Bien Cemetery, Prism Tower's ruins were converted into the 20th and final Wild Zone in the city. After some time, L appeared at Hotel Z, explaining that more of his memories had returned, namely memories relating to two particular Pokémon: while he couldn't recall their exact names, he could remember an alternative name they were each known by: "The One Who Gives" (revealed to be Xerneas), and "The One Who Takes" (Yveltal). On advice from Team MZ, the player sought to find several former members of Team Flare for more information.
After finding and capturing both Xerneas and Yveltal, L later returned to Hotel Z, musing about seeing both of the concepts the Legendary Pokémon represented in himself after recovering more of his memory, before explaining his theory for why Zygarde would save someone driven as far into insanity as he was. He then challenged the player to a battle, claiming he wanted to understand them as a trainer. Following his defeat, he came to the conclusion that if he had tried to understand the five trainers who stood against him five years ago, he wouldn't have fired the Ultimate Weapon, before Zygarde arrived and beckoned them both to the Prism Tower Ruins.
After finding it underneath the tower, Zygarde challenged Paxton/Harmony to a battle, with L offering words of encouragement throughout. After capturing it, he handed them the Zygarde Cube, allowing them to change Zygarde between its 10% and 50% forms at will. He also came to realize that his original methods of "creating a more beautiful world" were severely flawed, both when giving freely and attempting to take everything back. Confessing that he was now cursed to live the same 3000-year lifespan AZ did, he resolved to spend his time wisely, deciding to search for a way to realize his dream without letting human greed influence his decisions. He thanked Paxton/Harmony for helping him come to this conclusion, before bidding them farewell.
Battle[]
Hyperrogue Ange Floette serves as the game's final boss, following the open-ended battle against Urbain/Taunie and the numerous Rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon it sends against the player. The battle is scripted to an extent; while the player is able to be defeated in this encounter, Ange's HP meter is depleted in stages. In addition, the player is assisted by Zygarde, with control shifting between it and Harmony/Paxton as the fight progresses.
Ange itself cannot be directly targeted by the player; instead, Zygarde serves to distract it, allowing the player to attack the Red and Blue Eternal Flowers that sprout from the ground in front of it. Defeating each Flower deals minor damage to Ange. The Eternal Flowers themselves are equipped with multiple long-range and two close-range attacks, making them fairly dangerous opponents, especially when both are active at the same time. They also do not move around in the arena, will prioritise targeting the Player when given the choice between them and their Pokémon, are typeless, and resistant to normal attacks. Like with previous battles against Rogue Mega Pokémon, however, they are weak to Plus Moves and properly Mega Evolved Pokémon.
After defeating both flowers, Ange will temporarily cease movement, allowing Zygarde to unleash one of its three Ground-type attacks (Thousand Waves, Thousand Arrows, or Land's Wrath) for major damage. Doing so, however, enrages it, provoking it into raining Light of Ruin on the arena; Zygarde will respond by shielding part of the arena from the attack, giving them a safe spot to wait it out, before the Red and Blue Flowers return to continue attacking. From this point on, it will occasionally repeat the attack, telegraphed by the messages "Ange Floette appears to be gathering power...", followed by "Ange Floette is firing off a powerful light!". To encourage the player retreat under Zygarde's shield, the Eternal Flowers will bury themselves into the ground once the safe zone is created, before returning once the attack ends.
This cycle repeats twice more, with the player being allowed to pick one of Zygarde's Ground-type attacks again at the end of the second cycle, and its fourth attack, Core Enforcer, at the end of the third cycle as a finishing blow.
The battle is essentially finished after the third pair of Eternal Flowers fall; the only possible way to lose the battle at this point is if the game crashes. After scrolling through the dialogue following, Ange will make a final desperate attempt to destroy Lumiose with the little energy it still has, charging up a single, extremely powerful Light of Ruin attack; the pebble in the player's bag will begin reacting, prompting them to select it; doing so reveals that the pebble is actually a Zygardite. The player will then be guided through Mega Evolving Zygarde, before selecting Core Enforcer again; doing so turns the attack into Nihil Light, which Zygarde proceeds to unleash on Ange and its Light of Ruin bullet at the player's command, eradicating both and ending the threat they posed to the Kalos Region.
Trivia[]
- "Ange" is French for Angel, representing Ange being built into the Pokémon world's equivalent of the Eiffel Tower and its intended purpose of being a giver of life before it went rogue. This makes Ange a giant pun on the term "fallen angel", used in modern day conversation to refer to an angel who was cast out of the Heavens for rebelling against their God, or otherwise lost and now stands against what they originally stood for.
- Interestingly, the first Pokémon to fall victim to Rogue Mega Evolution (that the player has to battle, at least) is Absol, the Disaster Pokémon. Absol is said to only descend from its mountain habitat when a disaster is about to occur; as a consequence, it was mistakenly believed that Absol itself was the cause of disaster, hence its Pokédex classification. In spite of this, however, Absol means no harm, and instead considers itself a harbinger of the disaster, appearing to warn the humans of what was to come. Absol being the first Rogue Mega Pokémon encounter could be seen as a hint of what was to come.
- Another fact about this encounter is that players are loaned a Lucario from AZ to battle alongside them; in Pokémon X/Y, a Lucario Vs. Lucario battle against Gym Leader Korrina was used as a tutorial boss to introduce the mechanic to players part-way through the game, with the player's Lucario being given to them afterward. While the player does not receive AZ's Lucario immediately after defeating Absol (Absol joins their party in its stead), he does still gift it to them after he passes away; instead of adopting the player's Trainer ID (as it did in X/Y) or revealing AZ's, checking Lucario's summary reveals that it originally belonged to Korrina.
- When Pokémon Legends: Z-A was first revealed, fans immediately started speculating that a Legendary Pokémon resembling the letter "A" would be introduced and serve as the main antagonist opposing Zygarde, evidenced by the logo of the game showcasing the "Z" with the Hexagonal pattern associated with Zygarde and the "A" featuring a floral pattern. This was partially proven correct, as Ange fulfills the role of being the main threat of the game, having a major floral theming, and being shaped like the letter "A" while Zygarde's main objective in the game is destroying it, however Ange itself is not a Pokémon but rather a super weapon.
- Further making this point, Zygarde's finishing attack against Ange Floette, Core Enforcer, appears in the shape of a letter "Z" when it hits. Given that, in its current form, Ange had the appearance of a giant letter "A", they together formed the "Z-A" from the game's logo.
- Ange is the fourth final boss of a Pokémon game to be neither a Pokémon nor a Trainer, following the Bittercold, Dark Rust, and Dark Matter.
- Ange is also notable for being the first instance of this happening in a main series entry, where the previous cases were in spin-off titles.
- Ange's ability to grant life is reflected by the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas. Its older sibling, the Ultimate Weapon, was also likened to Yveltal, due to them sharing the same abilities as harbingers of death.
- In addition, the Eternal Flowers that serve as the primary targets for the Player's Pokémon during its boss battle are colored blue and red, likely intended to suggest a connection between Ange and the Legendary Pokémon.
- Ange Floette's battle theme features a sample of Lumiose City's leitmotif at the start of the track, along with a recurring riff of the main Pokémon theme throughout the rest of the track, intended to remind players that they aren't just fighting for Lumiose; the fate of the entire world of Pokémon rested on their shoulders.
- Ange shares several characteristics with the Giant Rock featured in the climax of Pokémon: The Series - XYZ. Both were artificial constructs that absorbed a live Pokémon to feed on their energy, both took on appearances derived from a Pokémon, both were capable of unleashing giant roots and firing powerful laser blasts, both displayed a degree of sentience after becoming active (this was proven to be false in the case of the Giant Rock, as it was being controlled by Lysandre), and both ultimately met their fates at the hands of Zygarde.
- Pokédex entries for Mega Evolution Pokémon frequently refer to the process as being harmful to the Pokémon and causing severe stress on them, this was in stark contrast to how the mechanic was described in its debut games Pokémon X/Y as being the result of human and Pokémon cooperation letting them reach their ultimate potential. Ange's introduction recontextualizes this contradiction, as Pokémon who Mega Evolve the correct way are able to remain in control, while Pokémon forced to Mega Evolve against their will by Ange suffer severe pain and become uncontrollable feral monsters.
- Several sidequests in the game also depict the Pokémon that underwent Rogue Mega Evolution suffer long-term consequences even after being returned to normal, in at least once instance heavily implying that the Pokémon died due to excess strain put on their bodies by the experience.
