Council Member: B-but the people are on our side! The citizens of Heaven know that we are just!

Gabriel: The masses only follow you out of fear and desperation. I will show them there is nothing to be afraid of, for there is no species nor origin, vested rank or holy status that will stop the sharp edge of a sword.
~ Gabriel and a Councilman about the Angels.

The Angels are the main antagonists of the first-person shooter game Ultrakill.

They are the inhabitants of Heaven, the servants of God and the overseers of Hell. When the Father sudden disappeared from Heaven, the realm was in a state of mass disarray, until a group of angels known as The Council stepped up as the substitute authority. Using their warped interpretation of God's will, they ruled over Heaven's citizens with fear and brutality. When using the terminal, their profiles are labelled with a yellow background.

Biography[]

Since time immemorial, the Angels were the residents of Heaven and the servants of God. They also served as the wardens of Hell, ensuring its sinners carried out their eternal punishments. While the Father surveyed Humanity and their developments, the Angels viewed humans as foolish little experiments of His and wanted little to do with them.

One day, however, God suddenly vanished from all traces of Heaven, plunging the entire realm into panic. All Angels— including those overseeing Hell—were recalled back to Heaven following this disaster, allowing certain sinners such as King Minos and King Sisyphus to cultivate and reshape their respective layers.

During this era of chaos and fear, a group of Angels known as the Council was created to supplant God's role. They enforced their rule through their secretly warped interpretations of His will, using fear and terror to control the masses. With order in Heaven restored, the Council quickly discovered what the unattended sinners of Hell had been up to. Enraged by their disregard for their eternal punishments, they organized and dispatched a massive army of Angels—spearheaded by the brightest among them, Gabriel, to reestablish the status quo.

The retaking of Hell began with the Lust layer, where Gabriel confronted King Minos during his renaissance. Although the Judge of Hell attempted to resolve the conflict peacefully, Gabriel mercilessly cut him down in front of his loyal subjects and usurped his title. After Minos’ death, his corpse was taken over by his former pet snakes, now grotesque parasites. The possessed body then devastated the city of Lust and its people, rendering all of King Minos’ work meaningless.

After subjugating Lust, the Angels moved on to Greed, only to face massive resistance from its inhabitants led by King Sisyphus. Unlike Minos, Sisyphus had spent his time gathering an army of insurrectionists to overthrow Heaven and end its reign of terror. Despite their preparation and the intensity of the battles, the insurrectionists ultimately relied too heavily on Sisyphus’ charisma as their sole driving motivation. Gabriel, having experienced this influence firsthand, recognized the flaw and launched a focused assault on the King. The supreme Angel managed to decapitate Sisyphus and displayed the severed head to his followers, demoralizing them and ensuring their defeat. As punishment for their attempted coup, Greed’s rebels were mutilated en masse and forced to resume carrying boulders up its temples in that condition.

Some time later, a swarm of blood-fueled robots built by mankind descended into Hell after the mysterious and abrupt extinction of their creators left them without a fuel source. The speed and of their devastation across the layers prompted the Angels to take action. Gabriel led the combat effort, destroying thousands of them until he encountered a certain machine—V1—in the Gluttony layer. Despite his divine status and previous achievements, Gabriel quickly realized this machine was far more capable than the others—capable enough to even best him. Aghast at losing to a “mere object,” he cursed V1 in anger before retreating to Heaven. The disappointed Council, believing his defeat signaled betrayal, removed the source of his immortality—the Father's Light—from his body. They granted him one day to redeem himself by destroying V1 before the remaining embers of the Light faded and took his life with them.

Hours pass since Gabriel’s defeat at the hands of V1, and the machines’ rampage had already left Limbo and Lust devoid of life, with Gluttony soon to follow. Vengeful and humiliated, Gabriel tracked V1 down in the Heresy layer for another duel, fighting fiercer than ever. However, as the battle progressed, he began to feel something unfamiliar. When V1 defeated him again, Gabriel did not lash out as before. Instead, he recognized the strange feeling as excitement—exhilaration at facing someone equal to him. Calmly, he told the machine they would meet again and withdrew for a second time.

Following his second loss, Gabriel reflected on the countless lives he had taken in God’s name. His contemplation led him to realize the truth about the will he had devoted his entire existence to: it no longer existed, and the Council had been ruling Heaven according to their own fabricated version of it. With this epiphany, Gabriel returned to Heaven and slaughtered all members of the Council in one fell swoop. The last remaining member pleaded that killing him would prevent Gabriel from retrieving the Father’s Light, meaning he would die within hours. Gabriel replied that he was fully aware of the consequences before swiftly decapitating him. Once the massacre was complete, Gabriel wordlessly presented the councilman’s severed head to the masses, signifying the end of both the Council and God’s will. Afterwards, Gabriel left the realm for the final time, intent on a last battle against V1 and its kind.

Trivia[]

  • According to Hakita in an commentary stream for Act II, Angels don't have specific genders, much like their biblical counterparts. The only reason why more prominent angels (e.g.,Gabriel and the Council) are referred to with masculine pronouns is an indication of their status, as they feel closer to God, who also had masculine pronouns.
