That piece was certainly lauded as the pinnacle of beauty at the time, but if you ask me, the only place it belongs now is in the trash. " | „ |

Ango Natsume is a major antagonist from Persona 5 Strikers, a spinoff of the 2016 video game Persona 5. He is an author who's novel "Prince of Nightmares" becomes immensely popular in Sendai after he uses EMMA to brainwash the citizens of the city into supporting him. He serves as the monarch of the Sendai jail and the main antagonist of the second arc of the game.
He is voiced by Daisuke Kishio in the Japanese version of the game and by Zach Aguilar in the English version.
Appearance[]
Ango has chin-length, light copper-colored hair and a small mole just to the left of his nose. His features include thin eyebrows, sharp brown eyes, and he typically dresses in a black waistcoat paired with matching trousers, black driving gloves, a purple bolo tie, and rimless square glasses tinted rose.
In his Monarch form, Ango’s appearance changes dramatically. His skin turns a pale lavender tone, his chin becomes more angular, his hair shifts to spiky blonde, and two massive horns curve around his head, which serve as his crown and symbolize his control over the jail—when destroyed, they release the Desires he has imprisoned. He wears only red shorts beneath a cardboard “demon king” cutout costume, a fact hidden until the cutout falls away after his defeat.
For the boss battle, Ango transforms further into a Western-style dragon clad in golden armor. His tail ends in a fountain pen nib, which he employs in several of his attacks. His wings are formed from sheets of paper, and as the fight progresses, his armor gradually breaks apart, exposing pale scales and leaving him in just red undergarments.
Biography[]
Ango Natsume is a novelist and the grandson of acclaimed author Sougo Natsume. He is best known for his book Prince of Nightmares, an isekai fantasy about a teenager reincarnated as a demon king, with the supposed “heroes” framed as villains. Though marketed as a major literary success that sold over one million copies and even won an award, the novel’s acclaim is rooted in plagiarism and manipulation rather than Ango having any actual talent.
While Sougo Natsume frequently earned top literary awards, Ango lacked his grandfather’s creativity. He relied heavily on writing manuals and inspiration from existing works, producing Prince of Nightmares as a derivative piece filled with copied dialogue and scenes from popular anime and novels, which Futaba notes when Yusuke gives her the copy of the novel they had received earlier. Despite submitting the book for awards multiple times, it was consistently rejected. To protect their investment and capitalize on his grandfather’s reputation, Ango’s publishers manufactured a minor award for him, marketing the novel as a continuation of his family’s literary genius. Ango eventually discovered his editors’ deception and their hatred for both him and his audience, overhearing them dismiss and demean his work at a café. Humiliated and embittered, he developed a grudge against the publishing company and sought a way to force recognition for his writing.
Two months before the events of Persona 5 Strikers, Ango discovered the EMMA app and used it to exact revenge on his publishers while artificially boosting sales of his novel. By inducing Changes of Heart on his editors and openly sharing his EMMA keyword, he gained control over others’ Desires, rapidly and artificially inflating his popularity in Sendai. This resulted in Prince of Nightmares selling over a million copies locally, with rumors of a television drama adaptation and constant online discussion—though the hype was largely limited to Sendai due to the confined range of his Jail. Posters promoting the novel appeared across the city, even at cultural landmarks like the Date Masamune statue, which Sendai is known for.
As the Monarch of the Sendai Jail, Ango becomes the Phantom Thieves’ second major target over the summer following Alice Hiiragi in Shibuya. His Jail manifests as a plagiarized fantasy kingdom, where the player must defeat the “Four Heavenly Kings”—cognitive versions of his publishers—before confronting his Shadow. The setting reflects Prince of Nightmares, with the protagonist cast as the Demon King and the heroes reimagined as villains, mirroring Ango’s resentment toward those who exposed his inadequacies.
During their investigation, the Thieves observe how Natsume’s fans fall into extreme behaviors: purchasing dozens of copies of his book, skipping work, engaging in street fights dressed as characters, or falling into debt over their obsession. At a celebratory banquet for the millionth copy, Yusuke overhears Natsume speaking with his editors about his mother's painting, the Sayuri. Natsume mentions Ichiryusai Madarame's confession on TV and states that the painting deserves to be thrown in the trash. Yusuke soon confronts Natsume by posing as a fan of his and asks for an autograph and his EMMA keyword, which he reveals as being “Prince of Nightmares.” Before Yusuke leaves, he tells Natsume that he overheard his words about the Sayuri and explains how his mother painted it with all the love she had. He then furiously tells him not to even consider "Prince of Nightmares" on par with it and that he knows it's riddled with plagiarism.
When challenged in his Jail, Natsume’s Shadow manifests as a Demon King who views critics as “heroes” conspiring against him. After transforming into an extravagant golden dragon during battle, he is defeated by the Phantom Thieves. His armor shatters, leaving only undergarments and cardboard props, symbolizing his fraudulent persona.
After his defeat, Natsume holds a press conference where he confesses to plagiarism and the rigged literary award, and his story of becoming a writer to inspire a hospitalized little girl being nothing but a lie to make people sympathetic towards him. He offers refunds to anyone who bought Prince of Nightmares, and swears that his career as an author will be over from this point. However, Yusuke intervenes in the press conference encourages him not to abandon his dreams of being an author and to create an authentic novel of his own. Natsume apologizes and promises to move forward as a genuine writer.
Later, Futaba inspects his version of the EMMA app and finds no abnormalities, suggesting that, like Alice Hiiragi, he was merely another pawn manipulated by somebody else.
