The Animal/Beast Spirits (動物霊 Doubutsurei) are the main antagonists of Touhou Project's 17th game Wily Beast and Weakest Creature and 19th game Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost.
They are the residents of Animal Realm (畜生界 Chikushoukai), an world bounded by the law of survival-of-the-fittest, where the strong dominate the weak. The animal spirits are ruled by three organizations, Saki Kurokoma's Keiga Family (勁牙組), Yachie Kicchou's Kiketsu Family (鬼傑組) and Yuuma Toutetsu's Gouyoku Alliance (剛欲同盟).
In the events of Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, they tricked the three heroines into defeating their enemy Keiki Haniyasushin in order to gain power and invade the surface.

Background[]
The Animal Realm used to be the ultimate survival-of-the-fittest world, where the strong rule as they desire, until a few beasts that were more clever and wily than others began to form organizations. Since the animal spirits already have no chance of victory by themselves, they all join one of these organizations and fight for them to compete the domination of Animal Realm.
Now the Animal Realm are ruled by three organizations: The Keiga Family, which includes beast spirits with excellent leg strength, fangs, and strong bodies; The Kiketsu Family, which includes beast spirits that excel at surprise attacks from the ground, the water, darkness; The Gouyoku Alliance, which includes beast spirits that fight from the air or with overwhelming numbers, from a bird's-eye point of view. There're also other mysterious organizations of beast spirits, such as those who excel in cowardly methods of fighting including traps, poisons, parasitism, camouflage.
On the other hand, Human Spirits (人間の霊 Ningen no rei), creatures that were weak in power but had extremely dexterous handstherem, were complete slaves to all of these beast organizations. The beast organizations' ruling classes created a shelter for human spirits named Primate Spirit Garden (霊長園 Reichouen), so that humans spirits could continue to be used as ever-capable slaves without going extinct. The animals spirits use the Primate Spirit Garden as a peaceful recreational facility for everyone in Animal Realm.
The powerless human spirits could not stand the slavery of beast spirits, they began praying to a god. The Sculptor God Keiki Haniyasushin were summoned and answered for their call, giving the humans idols to worship. However, the worshippped idols began to dominate humans, took control of the Primate Spirit Garden and the human spirits were enslaved again. The idols then flew forth from the Primate Spirit Garden, beginning to take over the Animal Realm. The animal spirits cannot hurt the idols who have no flesh or soul, so it was only a matter of time that the Animal Realm be ruled by the idols.
Wily Beast and Weakest Creature[]
In order to stop Keiki's idols from ruling over the Animal Realm, Kiketsu Family's leader Yachie Kicchou came up with the plan to use humans from surface to fight back. The animal spirits traveled through the hell to Gensokyo, put on a show of pretending to invade the surface, while called for help from Reimu, Marisa and Youmu and let them travel to Animal Realm to stop the invasion. The animal spirits accompanied the heroines went all along to travel to the Animal Realm, went to Primate Spirit Garden and defeated Keiki Haniyasushin and her Haniwa army.
Following Keiki's defeat, the Animal Realm fell into chaos again. Saki Kurokoma took the opportunity to lead an army of animal spirits to invade Gensokyo. The heroines, having realized they were tricked by Animal Spirits, set out to fight against Saki Kurokoma and brought an end to the invasion.
Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost[]
Due to Chimata Tenkyuu relinquished ownership of all land in Gensokyo, the greedy animal spirits started invading Gensokyo again in an attempt to claim ownership of the land. In order to stop the Gensokyo from turning into a literal hell by the war, Zanmu Nippaku recruited three minions, Enoko Mitsugashira, Son Biten and Chiyari Tenkajin, tasked them with infiltrating each of the three animal spirit organizations in order to put the groups into a three-way deadlock, and ultimately claim them all for herself. However, after witnessing Reimu Hakurei had gathered support from the youkai, Zanmu decided to leave Gensokyo in the hands of the human.
