Anna Sprengel is one of the overarching antagonists of the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
A very powerful and influential magician of the Rosicrucian Order, Anna has kept the foundation alive for one of the longest timeframes, being the master of its Number 1 temple residing in Germany. She is also said to have played a role in the foundation of Golden Dawn, having access to the Secret Chiefs and the Tree of Sephiroth.
After reclaiming her body from Madame Horos after almost a century, Anna founded the IT company R&C Occultics and sought to cause chaos between the magic and science side. She is Touma Kamijou's third archenemy and the arch-nemesis of Anna Kingsford.
Appearance[]
Despite being over a thousand years old, Anna appears as a ten-year old girl with purple eyes and long reddish-blonde hair which reaches her ankles, rolled into large ringlet curls and squished flat at the ends into several fried shrimp shapes, with rose decorations throughout. Anna is also capable of assuming an adult form like the one that Madame Horos had used.
After being restored to her body, Anna wore the gaudy red dress which Madame Horos had been wearing while using her body (the fabric and design of which Anna did not like), which was now too big for her and had to be held to avoid it falling off. She was also barefooted, having discarded the shoes as they were now the wrong size for her.
Personality[]
Egotistical to a fault, Anna Sprengel sees herself as the end-all of knowledge and power. She is a very cruel, arrogant, proud, self-centered and absurd woman who exhibits megalomaniacal tendencies. While not entirely obsessed with herself, she looks down on most people and things in the world, seeing them useful only as pawns in her schemes, and prioritizes her own goals above anything else, with no regard for whomever or whatever is harmed in the process.
Due to her immense power and ability to predict outcomes with near perfect certainty, Anna gets bored quite often and finds amusement in things that defy her predictions. As a result, she tends to be rather lackadaisical during a fight and doesn't take her opponents seriously. She classifies people according to her interest in them, if someone isn't of her interest, she won't remember their names and won't pay attention to them. Additionally, while various things catches her interest, they don't hold it for long and when she loses interest, she moves on. If something manages to disappoint her, she will most likely destroy it before moving on.
Most of the time, Anna is casual and uncaring, having a very polite and knowledgeable manner about her and rarely showing any signs of alarm. She often tries to make small talk with her enemies so as to anger or annoy them. Because of her sheer power and genius intellect, she is confident in herself and is capable of executing her plans successfully. She has a conviction that the world works for her comfort, and according to her words, the events around her are working for her. With her ruthlessness combined with a total lack of care for any of her subordinates, working for Anna can be very unappealing, and only her immense power holds the loyalty of those who serve her. Anna also thinks of herself as practically infallible, and always refuses to believe that she can be defeated even when the odds are clearly against her. However, the only time Anna has shown true fear is when she was confronted by a reanimated Anna Kingsford, knowing full well that she would be defeated.
Described as being black-hearted, Anna is unable to comprehend the feelings of others, and can be seen as a sociopath by normal standards. In addition to this, because of her lack of empathy, she often manipulates or exploits other people for her own interests. She expends every available resource to fulfill her goals when working on her experiments or plans for desires that she refuses to concede. She also cares nothing for such pawns, and is willing to kill them to get what she wants, usually setting things up so that they will end up destroying themselves. Due to her ambitions, Anna is apathetic to all other lives but her own, which was best shown when she considered killing Aradia to provoke an emotional change in Touma or when she gave Darris Hewlane the power that caused the mass population disappearance in Los Angeles.
From her past experiences with various magicians and cabals misinterpreting her words and twisting them to suit their needs, Anna believes that no one can truly understand her and scoffs at those who think they can. She also has very little patience for people who interrupt her in the middle of her explanations, throwing a tantrum and taking her anger out on a nearby object. It's eventually revealed that Anna wants someone to rely on and who will grant her anything she wishes. In addition to this, Anna has been known to cling to success and victory more than anyone, regardless of what she says, to the point that she cannot sustain herself without them.
Biography[]
Much of Anna's past is largely unknown due to her dubious nature. What is confirmed is that she indeed a member of the Rosicrucian Order, master of its No.1 temple (also known as Lichte, Liebe, Leben) in Germany, and a priestess who could call on the power of the Secret Chiefs. She is also said to have played a major role in the foundation of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn through the Sprengel Letters.

- Transcendent Connection: As an emissary of the Secret Chiefs, Anna Sprengel is able to freely contact these higher beings and receive their "blessings", treating them like credit cards in her own words. She can utilize incredible power beyond worldly comprehension which grants her great strength and numerous godlike abilities. She can also summon a Secret Chief, as seen with Aiwass.
- Transduality: Anna's existence surpasses all dual systems and she's beyond what can be expressed through 0 or 1. This is a result of her crossing the Abyss or Ungrund.
- Prophetic Prediction: Anna has a high degree of foresight and is able to see the end result of many different things, as seen when she predicted the death of Lilith Crowley many years in advance. However, it seems that her predictions aren't absolute as she can be easily suprised by many things.
- Matter Manipulation: According to Aiwass, Anna is apparently able to manipulate and rearrange atoms on a whim.
- Age Shifting: Anna can alter her own physical age at will, often shifting between her child form and her adult form. Her full power is manifested in her adult form, but she cannot maintain it for long in her weakened state, expending power in doing so.
- Miraculous Blood: A drop of Anna's blood can apparently create unknown miracles.
- Enhanced Strength: Anna is shown to be fairly strong in terms of brute strength. Even after losing most of her power due to it being squandered by Madame Horos for over a century, Anna was still able to stab her hand into Aiwass and harm him, even in his incorpereal state. At full power, she was certain she could easily kill him in one blow.
- Enhanced Durability: Anna is extremely resilient, being able to causally sit on a spiked chair or jump into an iron maiden without scratching her skin and with only a mild feeling. She can also consume a sample of the potent St. Germain virus without any ill effects. During her battle with Mikoto Misaka, Anna managed to withstand Mikoto's lightning attacks and even her Railgun.
- Magic Mastery: Anna Sprengel is an immensely powerful and knowledgeable magician who possesses a high level of mastery over magic, being a magical expert of the Rosicrucian Order and the master of its No. 1 temple in Germany. In addition to this, Anna is said to be powerful enough to rival the regular magic side on her own, due to her status as a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal.
- Claivoyance: Anna is able to view distant locations through the use of a jump rope with silver paper and plastic film from chocolate boxes attached at set intervals and blue light provided by Aiwass. By swinging and jumping over the rope, the blue light is reflected off the pieces attached to it, forming an egg-shaped display area around her. This created a bluish-white image of Windsor Castle's interior with the people inside of it being shown as yellow.
- Ley Line Manipulation: Anna is quite skilled at magically manipulating ley lines. By distorting the ley lines, she is capable of creating magical landmines, which can explode upon approach.
- Scorching Beams: Anna can fire scorching beams of heat from her hands at targets. These beams are highly destructive and hard to counter.
- Invisibility: With the help of Aiwass, Anna is capable of rendering herself invisible by using a spell based on the symbol of the black egg.
- Air Manipulation: Anna is able to physically grab the air itself to manipulate it. She can create whirlwinds as an attack and can also manipulate the air pressure to prevent flight via wings.
- Thorny Rose Crown: Anna is able to paralyze her targets by placing a rose crown on their heads.
- Power Circulation Blocking: Utilizing the Sephiroth's correspondence to the human body, Anna can block the flow of lifeforce through a person's body by hitting or kicking them. For a magician this would likely prevent them from using magic, but even for someone that doesn't use magic having the circulation disrupted this will cause problems with breathing and make their blood vessels throb.
- Breakers: Anna can use a variety of powers designed in imitation of Imagine Breaker. In truth the powers work completely different than it and aren't restricted to her right hand either. Anna channels Aiwass' energy for these techniques. She controls this power through the symbol of a rose with 22 petals each with one of 22 characters on it. Instead of using a physical rose she uses her hand as substitute and specifies which symbols she uses by bending her fingers in various ways. By combining these symbols and interpreting how they are red in various ways Anna can create countless different things.
- Structure Breaker: This enables Anna to slice through even distant buildings just by slightly swinging her hand.
- Space Breaker: Anna swings her hand and break through the dimension and space itself, while destroying every material in its path. Given that this attack is said to have 'no regard for distance' it is likely ranged.
- Fire Breaker: Anna can produce fire from her hand. She can furthermore make this fire spread. When she does the fire gets a sticky consistence like napalm.
- Item Breaker: With a snap of her fingers, she create bluish-white sparks from her hand. Once these sparks grow as bright as a blowtorch they all electrical devices in her surroundings explode.
- Gravity Breaker: Allows Anna to control a gravity like force. By lightly swinging her finger around she created an invisible field that collected all kinds of objects around her and flung them at her opponent.
- Scissor Breaker: By moving her middle and index finger in a scissor gesture, Anna can create a telekinetic force that ruptured the gas bag on an airship.
- Ice Breaker: Using this, Anna can freeze targets with ice.
- Acid Breaker: Anna can launch caustic acid from her hand.
- Wind Breaker: Anna can cause powerful winds by waving her hand around.
- Light Breaker: Anna can create bright flashing light from her hand.
- Explosion Breaker: With a swing of her hand, Anna can create three explosions.
- Electricity Breaker: Anna can shoot lightning from her hand.
- Maw Breaker: By closing two fingers Anna creates a giant invisible maw that bites at her target.
- Carbon Breaker: Anna demonstrated the ability to gather all surrounding carbon into her hand.
- Glass Vial Spell: Anna can utilize a spell involving a glass anti-personnel mine with a glass vial of chemicals in place of a normal fuse. If stepped on or thrown onto the ground, the vial will break and the chemicals inside would mix. With this, Anna is able to create a deadly, expanding space that seperates every limb and organ from her target's body, with the space growing infinitely.

- Genius-Level Intellect: Anna Sprengel possesses an extraordinary level of intellect, most likely due to her advanced age and life experience. She has extensive knowledge of magic and the occult, being a magical expert of the Rosicrucian Order. Anna's knowledge of various magical practices is practically unrivalled, save for her fellow transcendents, with her existence being known as the magician that looked down the path of a Magic God yet strayed from it entirely. Moreover, Anna has great understanding of technology, as she is able to use modern devices such as smartphones or 3D printers. She is also the CEO of R&C Occultics, an IT company. By using the data on Academy City's common OS stolen through R&C Occultics, Anna managed to hijack a Predator Octopus tank.
- Master Tactician: Anna is an outstandingly brilliant strategist who has lived for thousands of years. With her incredible foresight, she can easily predict things accurately far in the future, setting up plans for the future in advance. Due to her ability to predict things with nearly perfect accuracy, Anna is able to formulate numerous strategies while being multiple steps ahead of others. While she's often carefree in a fight, Anna is an expert at observing her opponents and exploiting their flaws. She is also a highly skilled manipulator, utilizing whatever knowledge she holds of others to try to deceive them into doing what conforms with her goals. By using the data she gathered about various people, she can easily manipulate them with her words alone to an extreme degree.
- Stealth Mastery: As a Rosicrucian magician, Anna can apparently perfectly blend into her surroundings to easiy slip past guards, without even doing any sneaking.
- Knifemanship: Anna is capable of wielding knife for non-supernatural combat, as shown in her battle with Touma Kamijou.
Equipment[]
The Pneuma-less Shell
- The Pneuma-less Shell: A spiritual item described as a base metal still created by distorting the original egg, intended to reduce Anna's status in order to minimize the mistakes produced when one forgets the fear of death. When she gives the signal "Incubate", an approximately 2 meter long floating metal orb is created following a shockwave which in itself can already serve as an attack against those around Anna. By turning the giant ship wheel in the center of the orb, the orb will open and produce one original essence out of human history at random. Said original is always an object that was the first at achieving a certain purpose. By drawing upon the essence of these objects, Anna can produce effects matching their use. Up to now the following objects were used:
- Whip: Summoned the world's oldest whip in the form of a tree branch, which allowed Anna to create powerful shockwaves.
- Bondage: The world's oldest bondage comes in the form of some worn out rope. Anna can throw this rope at a target and the rope will bind it. Despite how worn out it looks; the rope is actually strong enough to catch and bind an asteroid mid-air. By lightly tugging on the rope, Anna can produce an immense pressure to crush anything bound by it.
- Orbital launch: The world's oldest orbital launch comes in the form of Sputnik. Anna Sprengel can point her hand at a target, releasing a force powerful enough to launch that said target into Orbit.
- Writing Tool: The world's oldest writing tool comes in the form of a stone with an indentation which contains a mixture of charcoal, blood and fat. By using this paint to write unto objects Anna can create Original Grimoire's that follow her orders. Those grimoires have a limited intelligence and gain the ability to freely move around. In order to do so they draw their power from the ley lines and as long as they do so they are nearly indestructible, due to durability and regeneration. Like all Grimoires Anna's employ a special defense mechanism to protect the knowledge contained in them. Anyone that so much as looks upon the writing on them would receive an attack on their mind and soul. As these are only makeshift Grimoires they will melt and be destroyed a short time after their creation, due to not establishing a proper power circulation with the ley lines.
