Anthea is a major character in the 2023 DC Extended Universe superhero film Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
She is one of the Hesperides, who wishes to take back the powers her father gave to the Wizard Shazam. By the 21st century, Anthea comes across Billy Batson and his foster siblings, who fight crime as the Shazam Family, but soon starts growing close to Freddie Freeman. She and her eldest sister, Hespera were betrayed by their sister Kalypso (who killed Hespera and attempted to use the golden apple into the Earth to destroy all life).
She was portrayed by Rachel Zegler in her first villainous (temporarily) role.
Biography[]
She is initially disguised as a human called Anne, as she was Freddy Freeman's new schoolmate and the two eventually fell in love. The two dated on a rooftop, and Freddy explained to her about his family. He called Shazam, but a while after they've met each other, Kalypso and Hespera arrive for a battle, forcing "Anne" to reveal her true identity as Anthea and side with them during the battle.
She briefly fights against the heroes with her two sisters, and she does nothing when they kidnap Freddy. However, she was horrified when Kalypso tortured Freddy, before ordering the guards to throw him into the Ladon's pit.
Before the Ladon could harm both The Wizard and Freddy, Anthea acts out of mercy and builds a way for them to escape the monster. She later congratulates Hespera for retrieving the seed of life for peacefully restoring the broken parts of their realm. However, Kalypso reveals her true motives, and ultimately betrays Anthea and Hespera, who want to protect humanity rather than destroying it and conquering their place.. She tries to talk Kalypso out of this evilness, claiming that the humans are mostly good and innocent people, and that killing them would be monstrosity. Kalypso then summons Ladon and rides on it as she invades Earth and plants the seed of life for dark purposes. Anthea then travels to Earth with intent of stopping Kalypso, as she and Hespera finally redeem themselves (despite Anthea always sticking to good morals).
Anthea kisses Freddy before the two of them prepare to fight Kalypso. Kalypso then arrives, as she rides Ladon and creates an army of monsters. Anthea and Hespera then try to stop Kalypso together, but Ladon attacks Hespera fatally, before she magically turns Anthea into an ordinary human. She then goes to Freddy, and the two are confronted by Kalypso while she rides on Ladon. She is at first afraid to fight back, but Freddy encourages her, and the two scare Ladon off, keeping the beast alert so it won't rush to attack them. Shazam then arrives and lores Kalypso to a point in which Hespera generates a shield around them. Athena is worried with Freddy about the possibility that Shazam would die. She at first thinks Shazam is dead and mourns him with Freddy, calling him a god. However, she happily discovers that Shazam was alive. As Wonder Woman uses the staff to restore balance corrupted by Kalypso, Anthea is seen gaining her magic back, presumably becoming a goddess again and gaining her powers back.
Personality[]
Anthea is a selfless and heroic love interest, who would do anything to protect humanity and her lover Freddy and do what she thinks is right. She at first believed Kalypso's lies and manipulations to an extent, and she was vengeful towards Shazam before meeting him. She was never prepared to hurt Freddy herself, but at first, she wouldn't resist when Kalypso and Hespera have kidnapped him. However, she would be horrified when Kalypso tortured him
She later fully changed sides, and joined forces against Kalypso. She would even be the one to open Hespera's eyes to Kalypso's evilness. Anthea shown an even more horrified of witnessing her eldest sister, Hespera's death when her second sister Kalypso has betrayed them.

Trivia[]
- Like Hespera and Kalypso, Anthea is a completely original character from the DC Extended Universe. She has no comic book counterpart.
- Rachel Zegler originally auditioned to play Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in The Flash, but after losing out to Sasha Calle, was called back to audition for Anthea, which coupled with Jack Dylan Grazer's love towards her performance as Maria in the 2021 West Side Story remake, led her to land on the role.
