“ | There are plates of food that your husband likes better than you. You are nothing but a tolerated womb. We will never disrespect you in front of him, but you will do well to know your place in regard to me and my ladies. Do not attempt to take them from me again, horse f***er. | „ |
~ Lady Svenska threatening and insulting Catherine. |
Lady Antonia Svenska is an antagonist and villain in the 2020 series The Great.
She is a noblewoman in the court of Peter III of Russia and Catherine the Great.
She was portrayed by Danusia Samal.
Personality[]
Lady Svenska is a cruel, petty woman who despises Catherine. She is snide and catty, and willing to do anything to turn the entire court on Catherine. She demonstrates egotistical traits such as a lack of self-awareness and delusions of grandeur. Despite this it's clear that she does love her husband, and is deeply upset when he is killed during the coup.
Physical appearance[]
Lady Svenska has a narrow face. She has a tanned complexion and black hair. She dresses often in regency-period aristocratic dress, and adorns her hair with decorations. She wears makeup frequently and places false black beauty spots on her face.
Biography[]
Background[]
Lady Svenska married Colonel Svenska, and engaged in a separate sexual relationship with Peter III. Like most women in the court, Peter III uses the ladies of the court as sex objects. Lady Svenska resided in the court and is the leader of the noble ladies.
The Great[]
Svenska and the noblewomen are introduced to Catherine as her new friends. Svenska hates and frequently abuses Marial. As revenge, Catherine humiliates Svenska by ensuring she wears a dress made out of the same material as a tent being used for afternoon tea. As a retort, Svenska starts the rumour that Catherine had fornicated with a horse which is carried out by Lady Georgina Dymov. Due to the political backlash of these rumours, Catherine attempts to make amends with Lady Svenska, as well as offer her sympathy for her husband being sent to war. Lady Svenska callously rejects her offer and leaves her alone.
Lady Svenska then invites Catherine to a tea, which Catherine presumes is an extension of forgiveness. Instead, Lady Svenska uses it as a means to humiliate Catherine further. She and the rest of the noblewomen then begin kicking, pushing and abusing Catherine. Lady Svenska also firmly disapproves of Catherine's intentions to bring the Enlightenment movement to Russia, and strongly opposes Catherine's goal to build a school.
During Catherine's coup against Peter, Lady Svenska's husband is shot dead by General Velementov, which Svenska witnesses and is upset by. Lady Svenska later begins an affair with Velementov, Catherine's ally, to gain intel on the war with the Ottoman's on Peter's behalf. Svenska's most villainous act comes with her final appearance. After Catherine introduces "Lady Anastasya" to the court (who is really an elderly serf named Shakey), Lady Svenska indulges in conversation with her and enjoys her company. Lady Svenska is mortified that she enjoyed the company of a serf, and as revenge to Catherine for humiliating her, tries to have Shakey killed. When Svenska's maid refuses to kill her, Svenska does the deed herself and slits Shakey's throat.
Marial avenges Shakey (who was her former bunkmate and later her maid) by shooting Svenska point-blank in the back of the head.
