“ | There was Antonin Dolohov. I — I saw him torture countless Muggles and — and non-supporters of the Dark Lord. | „ |
~ Igor Karkaroff about Dolohov. |
Antonin Dolohov is a supporting antagonist in the Harry Potter book series and a minor antagonist in its film adaptations. He was a Dark Wizard and one of the original Death Eaters serving Lord Voldemort. Dolohov participated in both the First and Second Wizarding Wars, and was infamous for his skills in Dark Arts as well as sadism.
He was portrayed by Arben Bajraktaraj, who also played Marko Hoxha in Taken.
Biography[]
He fought in the First Wizarding War, during which he tortured many Muggles, Wizards and Witches who were not supporters of Voldemort. Along with four other Death Eaters, he participated in the murders of Fabian and Gideon Prewett. Dolohov was caught and convicted of these crimes, and sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban. His cell was located beside Bellatrix Lestrange's.
Fourteen years later, he escaped after Voldemort's return during the time when Minister Cornelius Fudge denied any rumors regarding the Dark Lord's return, in the mass break-out of 1996, which, in the film version, caused an explosion in Azkaban. He participated in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, under Lucius Malfoy's orders, during which he severely injured Hermione Granger with a cutting dark spell of his own creation (leaving her unconscious with severe internal bleeding for the rest of the battle) and kicked Neville Longbottom in the face. He also engaged Harry Potter and Sirius Black during the arrival of the Order of the Phoenix, and was defeated, re-captured by the Ministry of Magic, and incarcerated back to Azkaban.
By the summer of 1997, during the Second Wizarding War, Dolohov was at large again due to another mass breakout from Azkaban caused by the traitorous Dementors. He presumably took part in the Battle of the Seven Potters along with Voldemort himself and the rest of his closest followers, during Harry Potter's escape from Little Whinging. A few days later, Dolohov and Thorfinn Rowle attacked Harry, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley at Tottenham Court Road in London, being directed straight to them thanks to Harry saying Voldemort's name, which was put under a Taboo Curse when the Ministry fell to the Death Eaters. Dolohov and Rowle were defeated and their memories were wiped by Hermione, who removed from them any recollection the encounter with the trio was wiped. After they woke up without clues, they reported back to Voldemort. As Rowle was tortured by Draco Malfoy under Voldemort's supervision, it is likely that Dolohov was subjected to the same punishment, as him and Rowle summoned Voldemort with the Dark Mark shortly before attacking Harry and his friends, but when Voldemort arrived the two were defeated and had no idea why they called him.
In 1998, Dolohov fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, during which he killed Remus Lupin. At the climax of the battle (the second wave after a break), he engaged Professor Filius Flitwick in a duel, and was defeated and likely sent back to Azkaban, unless he was possibly killed by Flitwick, in that case avenging Lupin's death.
