Antonius is a major antagonist in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, the third and final installment in The Hunger Games trilogy and its film adaptations.
He was Panem's Defense Minister, and a member of the Presidential Cabinet, working closely alongside President Snow. His appearances have shown that he is an entrusted and high-ranking member within the Capitol's political system.
Antonius is a corrupt official and deeply loyal towards Snow, supporting his tyrannical regime and enforcing the Capitol's unjust system. However, it can also be said that he was deeply afraid of Snow and feared punishment for disobedience, disloyalty, or failure.
He is an exclusive character for the movies and never appears nor is mentioned in any of the original books of the original Hunger Games literature trilogy.
He was portrayed by Robert Knepper.
Biography[]
Antonius appears in Mockingjay Part 1 and 2 as the final book of the trilogy was split into two films.
He is first seen when informing President Snow about Katniss Everdeen visiting a makeshift hospital in District 8. Antonius suggests sending hovercraft to target Katniss Everdeen and her fellow District 13 soldiers, but Snow orders him to attack the hospital instead, against Egeria's objections. This order was carried out, although numerous planes were shot down by rebels in District 8 and created an opportunity for Katniss Everdeen to make a propo, urging the rebels to fight.
Antonius later meets with Snow and Egeria when the rebels destroyed the hydroelectric dam in District 5, causing a power outage, weakening of the Capitol's power to broadcast propaganda and rendering the city vulnerable to enemy attacks. During the power outage, District 13 sends a special forces unit to rescue the remaining victors held captive by the Capitol.
His final appearance occurs early into The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 during a banquet with President Snow and several other high-ranking officials of the Capitol, including cabinet ministers and generals. This occurs shortly after the takeover of District 2 by the rebels in which they launched an improvised attack on the Nut (Capitol military headquarters) by bombing the mountains and triggering avalanches, burying most exits and killing off large numbers of Peacekeepers.
The banquet begins with a footage of Katniss Everdeen getting shot just after making a speech urging District 2 loyalist soldiers to join the rebellion. President Snow then gives a toast, in which all seated at the table take a sip of their wine, before the president asks Antonius what they are celebrating with the massive loss of Capitol troops in District 2.
Antonius replies, "The death of the Mockingjay." Snow, however, points out that if the Mockingjay (Katniss Everdeen) actually died, the rebels would use her as a martyr for their cause. He then rebukes Antonius for having diverted all of their best troops into District 2, pointing out that Antonius has a habit of "burying people before they are dead." Snow proceeds to issue new orders to his cabinet members and generals, demanding that they ready all anti-aircraft defenses to counter air raids and evacuate the outer parts of the Capitol, given that the rebels will be arriving in a few days.
Snow concludes that they are toasting "a glorious era coming to its bitter end", just as Antonius experiences spasms and collapses, with blood pouring out from his nose and mouth. This implies that Snow had poisoned his drink, his signature killing method throughout his life. Antonius ultimately paid with his life for having failed to suppress the uprising and allowed the rebels to win the war.
