Antony Skomal is a minor, yet influential antagonist in the 2017 Netflix original film Death Note, which is very loosely based on the anime and manga series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. He is a violent criminal and Light Turner's second victim of the Death Note.
He was portrayed by Artin John.
Skomal had a history of violent and sadistic crimes, but was always able to get out of them, mostly with him and his defense teams bribing the juries with his great wealth. Before the events of the movie, he struck Light Turner's mother with his car (it is unknown if it was intentional or not). Even though he had killed a police officer's wife, he got off without conviction, presumably in the same way as before by buying off the jury. His multiple crimes without conviction eventually lead to the media calling him the "Teflon Criminal".
Skomal's lack of conviction lit a vengeful rage and desire for justice inside of Light, leading him to despise Skomal and seek to cause punishment for criminals like him. Light gets the opportunity when the Shinigami Ryuk drops his Death Note, and Light obtains it. After Ryuk convinces him to use it to kill school bully Kenny Doyle, Light realizes its power and, after an argument with his father, writes Skomal's name and cause of death in the Death Note.
While Skomal is out eating at a fancy restaurant, a waiter trips and drops a steak knife, which Skomal is violently impaled by. He chokes on his food and falls dead.
Light's father gets a call about Skomal's death the next morning, and though he says he should not be, he is pleased that karma caught up to him, unaware that his son was Skomal's killer. Later in the film, James begins to wonder if Light was the killer, as he hated Skomal so much.
Skomal is shown to be extravagant and arrogant, and often throws lavish parties and self-indulgent celebrations. He is shown to also be sadistic when it comes to his violent crimes and getting off scot-free, as he smiles evilly after not receiving conviction. It is clear that he commits crimes because he knows the legal system cannot touch him.
- James Turner thinks that Skomal is Light's first victim, when Doyle was actually the first.
