Anubis is a major antagonist in the Spelunky series.
Anubis is a jackal-headed deity of funerary rites, protector of graves, and guide to the underworld. He rules the Temple of Anubis and his second Temple of Anubis in Spelunky's sequel. He uses his scepter to make psychic blasts instant-kill guy spelunky. This article shows the version of Anubis from the indie video game Spelunky series.
Spelunky HD[]
Anubis appears as the main boss in the first level of Temple, using the scepter to shoot psychic blasts at guy spelunky. An easy way to kill Anubis is using two sticky bombs. A shotgun, boomerang, or freeze ray is also a good way to kill him.
If you don't have any of those, try luring Anubis into a tiki trap or a crush trap, however, only the top part of Anubis triggers the tiki trap, and using a Crush Trap may accidentally get the Scepter crushed.
As a last resort, the player can use a rock or the whip to kill Anubis, staying away from the psychic blasts. While it's possible to stomp Anubis, it will normally result in the player getting hit by the psychic blasts, since they spawn from the top part of Anubis.
Spelunky 2[]
Anubis appears as the main boss of the first Temple of Anubis, using his scepter to shoot his psychic blasts at Ana Spelunky. Anubis is initially found dormant, resting on his throne found somewhere along the main path of the level. He may be damaged and still deal contact damage to the Spelunker while on his throne.
If the Spelunker gets too close to Anubis, bothers him by causing a nearby explosion, or attacks him, he blinks three times, before waking up to attack.
Anubis has 2 main attacks, and a consistent attack pattern:
- Anubis' main attack involves him raising his scepter, generating a psychic ray that will slowly float towards the Spelunker. While slow moving, they last for about 7 seconds and can easily overwhelm the Spelunker and trap them in a tight position with the frequency they are summoned.
- After summoning three of his normal projectiles, an Udjat Eye symbol will flash at the location of the Spelunker, and soon after Anubis will fire a much quicker, larger, and wider psychic disc aiming at where the eye originally flashed.
Both of Anubis' projectiles deal a significant 10 damage, and can pass through walls to reach their target. They also violently knock around items they make contact with, destroying them if possible. A notable exception to this rule are bombs, which are unaffected.
Anubis traverses the level by floating around, and will back up from the player if they get too close to avoid being attacked by their Whip.
Trivia[]
Anubis can be seen wearing the Ankh, which probably explains how he returns from the dead as Anubis II in the City of Gold. Anubis II loses the Ankh after he resurrects, but gains the power to pass through walls like the Ghost and summon Red Skeletons from Hell.
Spelunky 2[]
- Anubis carries an Ankh on his chest. As the Ankh item the Spelunker can obtain resurrects them in the event of their death, this foreshadows his return as Anubis II in the Duat after being initially killed in 4-1.
- In a Developer AMA, one of Spelunky 2's developers noted a concept involving Anubis surrounded by a large ball of water, which would return to him if pushed away. While this concept ultimately did not make it into the final game, a gif showing how this would have looked like was shared by the developers, seen here.
