When I was growing up in Kishinov, we had no VHS, no DVD back then. I remember... I did a job for this friend of my father. I pickpocketed a key off this apparatchik. The man gave me as a reward this children's projector. It came with three films: Speedy Gonzalez, Tarzan of the Apes, and John Wayne in The Cowboys. I watched that thing... a thousand times.
~ Anzor telling his background to Oleg.
I was nine years old. I didn't know how long movies were supposed to be. My version of The Cowboys, it was only ten minutes long. No John Wayne getting shot. Because it was for kids, they left that part out. I didn't know this until I arrive in America and see it on TV for the first time. I hate it. I want my eight millimeter back. Because on that one, the Duke lives. Some things were better in the old place. Not too many. Some things.
~ Anzor finishing his story.

Anzor Yugorsky is the main antagonist of the 2006 action movie Running Scared.

He was portrayed by Karel Roden, who also portrayed Emil Slovak in 15 Minutes, Strucker in Bulletproof Monk, Carter Kounen in Blade II, Mikhail Faustin and The Fixer in Grand Theft Auto IV, Yuri Gretkov in The Bourne Supremacy, and Viktor Frankenstein in Frankenstein's Army.

Biography[]

Anzor is the stepfather of the protagonist Oleg Yugorsky and the husband of Mila Yugorsky. A long time ago, his wife was a prostitute from Russia working for Anzor's uncle Ivan Yugorsky who fell pregnant. Ivan orders her to have an abortion but she refused. So Ivan sends Anzor to kill her but instead, he married her to protect her from others mobsters.

In the present, he is introduced watching a John Wayne movie in his house. He is served by Mila who brings him wolfgang puck. He refuses this because it is thick-crust. He asks her another Moskova. Oleg arrives at the same time from his friend. Anzor invites him to watch John Wayne with him, telling him it is the scene of the Duke when the boy is reluctant. He then tells him where his passion from John Wayne comes: In Kishinev, he pickpocked a key off the apparatchik of the friend of his father. As a reward, the man gave him a children's projector with 3 movies including John Wayne. He is interrumpted by Mila who says his meal is getting cold. Anzor brushes this away by emptying his cigarette on the meal. Resuming his story, he tells to Oleg how he liked the John Wayne version in USSR and how he hates the USA version, the reason being that the Duke dies in the American version. He proposes to Oleg to watch the scenes of Duke together. He tries to rewind but accidentally stumbles across another scene. Oleg says he prefers this scene. Hearing this, Anzor goes into a great anger. Throwing his plate on the ground, he pursues Oleg who fled to his room.

Still not believing that his stepson cannot love John Wayne, he forbids Mila to go bring him food. When she expresses her disagreement, telling that Oleg needs to eat because he is just a young boy, Anzor knocks her to the ground and beats her. He also forces her eat the food she prepared for Oleg. He tells her that he is the head of the house and that his family must obey him. At this moment, Oleg appears, armed with the gun of Joey Gazelle, the father of his friend and provokes Anzor by insulting John Wayne. Anzor gets furious but is surprised when Oleg shows he has a gun. Moving backwards, he gets hot in the shoulder.

Having heard what happened, Joey runs into the house and finds Anzor laying against the fridge. Answering bluntly Joey's questions, he reveals that it is Oleg who shot with a gun he doesn't even have. Joey realizes then Oleg has his own gun. Anzor is then brought to the hospital.

At the hospital, a detective named Rydell interrogates him abouyt the shootout. Anzor lies to him by telling it is a Black who shot him rather than his child. Rydell reveals then that he knows he is the nephew of the Russian mobster Ivan Yugorsky and that his men have found a lot of drugs in his house. He tries to blackmail Anzor by threatening to reveal his drug hiding but Anzor still maintains his version.

After Detective Rydell reminds him of his deal, Anzor finds Oleg in the police station. He takes him to a bakery and asks him softly where is the gun. Oleg coldly says that he should not have missed him. This sets Anzor off, who insults and chases Oleg through the bakery and parking. However, he doesn't manage to find Oleg, the latter hid in Dez & Edele Hansel's van.

Ivan gets in contact with him later and brings him to a ice hockey arena with Oleg, Joey, and the head of the Italian mob Frankie Perello with whom Ivan has a deal. Ivan asks Oleg if Joey did give the gun to shoot Anzor but he denies it. Anzor shouts to Oleg to stop to protect him and to tell the truth. Oleg continues to deny and Ivan, having enough, orders his nephew to kill Oleg. Anzor seems to want to execute it at first. He leans in and asks his stepson to say something negative about the Duke. However, he hesitates more and more and finally realizes that he cannot bring himself to kill a child. Throwing the weapon to the ground, he leaves but Ivan, furious at being disobeyed, shoots him down from behind, killing him.

Personality[]

Anzor is a wrathful and violent person. He tends to resort easily to violence when provoked, even to his wike and stepson. Related to his temper, he is also quite immature because he can be setted off over petty things like insulting his favorite movie character. Nevertheless, he can sometimes adopt a polite facade, as he does so with Oleg in the bakery when he questions him about the gun.

However, despite his negative traits, Anzor has some good in him, as he stands up to his evil uncle, refusing to kill his stepson, even if the relationship with him is not really good.
