~ Apollo's cocky last words before he is killed by Galetti, believing himself to be immortal and immune to humanity's weapons. |
Apollo, birth name unknown, is a major antagonist in the 2010 science fantasy novel The Age of Zeus. Formerly an Olympic archer that lost all his credit after accepting a bribe to throw a tournament, he became Apollo through Xander's transformation process.
He serves as one of the two archenemies (alongside Artemis) of the story's main protagonist, Sam Akehurst.
Biography[]
Apollo, while still occupying his unknown birth name, was an extremely gifted archer that trained and competed professionally until eventually making it to the Olympics as an official archer for his country (presumably the United States of America, but not confirmed).
However, his greed got to him one day as he was offered a sum of money to intentionally lose, and he accepted the bribe. This bribe was discovered and reported, and although the scandal was hushed up, the event left him with a heavy blemish on his record, and he was disqualified from future games.
Eventually, he was approached by Xander Landesman with the opportunity to become a god at the cost of his memories from his old life. He accepted the offer, as his greedy surpasses all his other needs, and he became the new Apollo.
After the Olympians revealed themselves to the world, Apollo stood alongside his sister Artemis, who wasn't his actual sister, just whomever had accepted Xander's Artemis proposal, although due to their memory alternation, they truly thought they were siblings. The two "siblings" worked together to execute everyone who was at an anti-Olympian rally. One of the people at that rally was the protagonist's partner, who drowned trying to save a child. This action is what sparks the rage in Sam to join the TITANs alliance group, which would stand against the Olympians.
Apollo is unseen for most of the TITANs attacks on the monsters, although he does show up to fight against them in the first major stand-off between the TITANs and Olympians. He is unable to kill any of them, however, and watches as his sister Artemis gets killed by the Minotaur, as her head is squeezed to a pink pulp.
Although Sam is offered the chance by Xander to become the next Artemis, an offer Apollo is oblivious to, she pretends to think about it long enough for the remaining TITANs to invade Olympus. Apollo is killed in the final battle of Olympus by Galetti, who blasts him in the face with a plasma rifle.
