“ | It doesn’t matter to me. Personally, I’m not interested in that newfangled cross. | „ |
~ Aradia to Anna Sprengel, voicing her distaste for Christianity. |
“ | This is what it means to receive triple the blessing of your own good deeds. Hee hee. And that triple can be stacked on top of itself as many times as necessary. Give me the chance and it will snowball far beyond anything you can handle. All I have to do is perform good deeds throughout my everyday life – or set things up so my actions are interpreted that way – and my power will eventually grow to the point that I can one-shot a Magic God or a Transcendent. | „ |
~ Aradia explaining her magic to Touma Kamijou. |
Aradia is a major character in A Certain Magical Index: Genesis Testament, serving as a former supporting antagonist of the Transcendent Saga. She serves as a supporting character in the New Year's Arc, and an ally of Touma Kamijou.
She is a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal who identifies as the patron goddess of witches and the night. Her salvation condition is to protect all witches, or any person who currently fits her definition of one.
Appearance[]
Aradia is a beautiful eighteen-year-old woman with long silver hair and an extremely curvaceous figure. This is accentuated by her outfit, which resembles a cross between a bikini and a belly dancer's costume.
Personality[]
As her namesake suggests, Aradia is dedicated to protecting and saving all witches who are unfairly oppressed or persecuted by society. Because of this, she has a great deal of resentment and hatred for Christianity and all things related to the cross due to the multiple witch trials conducted in the past, deeming it as just newfangled nonsense and states that it is nearly impossible to find any of value in a collective group of people who rejected the witches of a bygone era yet has appropriated their legends as part of their religion. Anna Sprengel sees this as merely lip service though, given Aradia's role as an advocate for witches, since her position requires her to be skeptical and disbelieving in the power of the cross.
Aradia is shown to be quite merciless and unrelenting when it comes to achieving her goals, as seen when she chased down Touma Kamijou and the Bologna Succubus throughout Shibuya. She is also rather manipulative, shown when she committed several "good deeds" just to bolster her magic and converted various people into her Sabbat just to kill Touma. Despite this, Aradia can be somewhat mature and even philosophical at times. She usually remains neutral in most arguments, however, if she deems someone is right, she will jump on their side and assist them as much as she can.
Furthermore, Aradia calms herself by "moonbathing", i.e. standing naked in the moonlight. While she doesn't normally do this around other people, she doesn't really make much effort to guard her privacy either. Even when fully dressed, her outfit is highly skimpy and she has a tendency to unintentionally shove various scantily-clad parts of her anatomy practically into Touma's face, completely failing to understand why this flusters him.
Biography[]
Aradia's full background and history prior to joining the Bridge Builders Cabal is currently unknown, with not even her real name being revealed as yet. She was described as a witch of the moon and light, and later described as though she was the figure from the book, the daughter of Lucifer and Diana who took physical form and descended as the goddess of all witches to save the ancient priestess of the night persecuted by the wealthy cross. Aradia seeks to protect and save all witches from persecution, even in the modern day. However, one recent failure that truly affected her was an innocent elderly woman living in the woods alone who was blamed for an illness that had ravaged the area. The village people burned the lady's house down and she succumbed from her injuries, dying in Aradia's arms.
Abilities[]
- Transcendent Magic: As a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal, Aradia is an incredibly powerful magician who is capable of rivaling the entire normal magic side by herself. She is described as a goddess of witches, the moon and the night.
- Risk 4: Like her fellow Transcendents, Aradia can draw on great power that transcends that of normal humans by releasing her triple seal with an incantation involving the declaration of "Risk 4" and "departing human territory". Her own power takes the form of the triple goddesses of Neopaganism. When activating it, she invokes the night, moon and witches, and how ancient goddesses of wisdom (giving Hecate, Isis, the Morrígan and Freyja as examples) would view the world from three perspectives while providing the priestess serving them with a powerful protection. The full form of her transcendence isn't fully shown, but her shadow stretches in three different directions and spins around her in a circle with an inhuman shape, but she is interrupted before the final result can be seen.
- Umbrakinesis: Aradia's power works through her shadow, which powers her magic through the potions she mixes into it using her feet. Her shadow is very abnormal, somehow not changing shape or angle regardless of the light shining around it and it even remains just one shadow even if light sources are shining from multiple directions.
- Witchcraft: Like many witches, Aradia makes extensive usage of various ointments and plant-based mixtures. She can use a number of spells related to divination, including a crystal divination variant and a bear grease tracking spell that is capable of sweeping the entire Shibuya area instantaneously.
- Reload Three Times: Aradia's main ability which makes use extensive use of the Rule of Three, a concept at the core of Wicca where the effects of a witch's magic, regardless of whether it is used for a good deed or a bad one, return to the witch at three times the strength. Aradia use this as a "weapon" which is being "reloaded" thrice by her shadow. By performing continuous "good deeds", Aradia can accumulate immense good fortune and amplify her power tenfold, causing it to proliferate. Aradia has multiple contingencies in place in order to prevent a potential recoil. Moreover, she can perform a deed corresponding to a spell and its desired outcome to increase that spell's effects and the like hood of that outcome (e.g. helping a lost child find their parents via a simple divination to support a search spell to locate someone for her).
- Aradia (New): After the Bridge Builders Cabal has deemed the current Aradia as a traitor, they created a new Aradia somehow with the same abilities as the original Aradia.
