Araki Mataemon as he appears in Ken Ishikawa's manga version of Makai Tensho

Araki Mataemon is one of the main antagonists in Makai Tensho [also known as Samurai Resurrection, Samurai Reincarnation, Ninja Resurrection, Reborn from Hell, and many other nicknames].

Like the other characters in Makai Tensho, Araki Mataemon was a real life samurai from the edo period. He was a famous practitioner of the Yagyu style of swordsmanship, and the founder of the koryū martial art Yagyū Shingan-ryū, also known as Yagyū Shingan-ryū Taijutsu. After he was killed by being poisoned in 1637 at the age of 53, he is resurrected a year later by Mori Soiken.

After being resurrected as a devil, Mataemon Araki is now a bloodthirsty, sadistic and barbaric sociopath who brutally murders anyone who gets in his way for his own amusement. He often drinks the blood from his enemies, and it is implied by one of the other villains [Hozoin Inshun] that Mataemon raped a woman. His allies are Hozoin Inshun, Amakusa Shiro Tokisada and Botaro Tamiya, who were also resurrected as demons by Mori Soiken.
