The moment that I was infected by my one of own initiates, Auri-El turned his back on me. I swore I'd have my revenge, no matter what the cost.
~ Vyrthur on his revenge towards his god, Auri-El.
Auri-El, forgive me...
~ Vyrthur's last words upon death.

Arch-Curate Vyrthur is the secondary antagonist of the first major Skyrim add-on, Dawnguard.

He was a former priest of the Inner Sanctum of the Forgotten Vale and Worshiper of Auri-El. But after being infected by vampirism from one of his followers and not receiving support from his god, he swore revenge. He is responsible for creating "The Tyranny of the Sun" prophecy, where someone can block out the sun with the usage of Auriel's bow and the blood of a Daughter of Coldharbour.

He is voiced by Stephen Russell, who voiced Mercer Frey and Madanach in the same game, and Karras from the Thief series.

Biography[]

Past[]

Vyrthur was a simple high priest of Auri-El during the Merethic Era and worked in the many temples and way shrines of his god. After the genocide of his people, one of his followers has contracted vampirism and when they return to him Vyrthur became infected. After trying to seek help from Auri-El and received nothing in the end, Vyrthur started to believed that his god abandon him and allowed the infection to grow turning him into a vampire. Out of anger, Vyrthur created a prophecy that he called "Tyranny of the Sun", where someone can block out the sun by corrupting Auriel's bow with the blood of a vampire. But it is not an ordinary vampire but a full blooded one known as Daughters of Coldharbour.

Centuries later into the First Era, the Forgotten Vale and the Inner Sanctum has been flooded by his corrupted race, the Falmer. When they invaded the Inner Sanctum he hold no concern since he defeated them all with frost magic and created an ice barrier to prevent any that tries to get him. For many centuries, Vrythur and his brother Knight-Paladin Gelebor remain the last of their race.

Dawnguard[]

Arch-Curate Vyrthur: "Did you really come here expecting to claim Auriel's Bow? You've done exactly as I predicted and brought your fetching companion to me."

Serana: "Wait, is he talking about me?"
Arch-Curate Vyrthur: "Which, I'm sorry to say, means your usefulness is at an end!"

After the Dragonborn and Serana completed their pilgrimage and entered the Inner Sanctum, they encountered Vrythur, who mocks them for entering the temple saying that their usefulness has come to end. He had the frozen Falmer and chaurus to attack them and use his magic to bring down the ceiling. Afterwords, he tries to bring the entire roof down and once in the destruction he flees to the balcony that overlooks the Vale. From there, he explains his whole plan and he was going to use Serena's blood to bring the prophecy to life. He engage in a fight with both the Dragonborn and Serana but ultimately died at their hands.

After his demise, Auri-El's chapel is finally open with Gelebor noticing his death but the Dragonborn tells Gelebor that Vrythur was not controlled by the Falmer and that he was a vampire manipulating them. Gelebor express relief and gives Auriel's bow to the Dragonborn. With Vrythur's death, Gelebor is now the last living Snow Elf.

Personality[]

From what's presented on his character, Vrythur is a vengeful and manipulative vampire, who created a dangerous prophecy that gain the attention of the Volkihar vampires in which destroyed Serena's family. It took him a century to build his plan and wait for a Daughter of Coldharbour but when Serana arrived with the Dragonborn he immediately choose to kill them since he no longer have any use of them. After he is surrounded by both of them, he revealed that he created the prophecy as a form of revenge against Auri-El and plan to block out the sun to do it. Despite his heresy, he seems to genuinely believe that his god abandon him and offer no protection against vampirism that was slowly infecting him.

Appearance[]

Vrythur is a Snow elf, one of the last of his race, like most of them he has snowy white hair and skin. He wears ancient Falmer amor that has a white and red color tone. His eyes is completely red with yellow irises due to his vampiric state.

  • Once his fight starts, the player can use the unrelenting force shout at him which would push him off the balcony to his death.
  • According to Gelebor, he thought Vyrthur was corrupted by the Falmer until it was revealed that Vyrthur was a vampire manipulating them the whole time. This revelation made him believe that there are other Snow elves out there possibility.
