My Archangel.
~ Sinister transforms Angel into Archangel.
Come to say goodbye to your legacy?
~ Archangel meeting with his father after trashing his company.

Warren Worthington III, also known as Angel and later Archangel, is a supporting antagonist in the animated series Wolverine and the X-Men.

Warren was once a member of the X-Men, and would often help them and even financially supported their headquarters. But his father dissapproved his methods and goals with the X-Men in helping mutants, resulting in his wings being removed. He turned to Sinister who gave him back his wings, but at the cost of his life, becoming Sinister's lackey and would turn on the X-Men and everything he stood for.

He was voiced by Liam O'Brien, who also voiced Zod in DC Super Hero Girls, Electro in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, and both Underbite and Kickback in Transformers: Robots in Disguise.

History[]

Backstory[]

Warren Worthington III was a born from a well rich family, but discovered his wings at a young age. Warren would meet Charles Xavier and become one of the first original members of the X-men. He would later meet others like Iceman, Beast and Cyclops, and during a trainning session would laugh at Cyclops who failed to accomplish the mission.

Later Magneto attacked New York City, Angel was seen helping Beast, while Jean and Cyclops defeated Magneto, giving the two of them high fives.

Angel, would become old enough to help join his father's industry, while Angel would use his money to help support the X-Men and other mutants alike, especially after the X-Men disbanded, he also have a romantic bond with Storm. But his father would disapprove of his methods along with disapproval of supporting those like the MRD and Senator Kelly.

Original Timeline[]

A year after the X-Men disbanded, Warren was forced to join his father to go to Senator Kelly's press conference about the Brotherhood attacking a police cruiser with toad being hauled to the MRD. Warren upset that he has support Senator Kelly, who also is backed by his money given by Warren's father.

His father claims he's "champion of the people", to which Warren rebukes that saying some people but not all.

Later Kelly presents the Sentinel Prowler, a prototype of a sentinel machine, which activates its Mutant Hunting mechanic settings, and hunts Rogue who attended the meeting, but is saved by Angel, Wolverine and the X-Men, who was happy to see the X-Men back together, but Rogue assures him they are, with Beast assuring him that are still working on that.

Angel has to leave, but tells Beast to continue to keep up the good fight. Later that night, Rogue and the Brotherhood attack the Warrens, and reveals to the X-men that Rogue has doublecrossed them, for information on Senator Kelly.

Rogue then returns to the X-Men revealing the Brotherhood are planning to hit Senator Kelly at another press conference.

The X-Men try to stop them, but are then forced to leave when they find out its a setup, Warren manages to get them out of harms way and back to their mansion.

Later, Warren is able to pay for rebuilding the damaged mansion, with the money of his co company and talks to Wolverine about Rogue's betrayal, but is interrupted when Emma Frost arrives to join the X-Men.

Warren would return to the X-Men in full force, when discovering the Sentinels funded by his father, are know being used for maximum suppression, going to neighborhood, city to city for any mutant who won't register for the mutant registration act. Believing now is the time to stand for his rights, and his other mutant's rights, and not wanting his father to take control of him no longer, as Beast praises this attitude, he along with the X-men charge at Worthington Industries to be stopped by Sentinels. Wolverine and the others are then saved by the timely arrival of the brotherhood, who work together to stop the Sentinels. During a few scuffles with the Sentinels, Warren's father is able to catch a glimpse of Angel, expressing shame of his son's actions.

In "Guardian", Angel, he begins to save mutants and is later seen stopping an MRD transport from hauling a mutant, he saves the mutant and tells him to find a safe place hide, even suggesting to leave the city.

He would then be awaited by his father at night, calling him a phantom street thug and claiming it will get him killed one day, which he thinks will make him satifisied.

The following morning, Angel catches up with Storm, on current events but the two enjoy their brief flight date, that's Wolverine and Beast arrive with grave news. Worthington Industries has developed a cure for humans but cancer for the mutant known as the Legacy Virus. Wolverine finds ironic that Angel's father wants to wipe Mutant dna, yet his own son, is one, Angel understanding the situation confronts his father, Beast heeds to make better preparations, but Angel suggests quick action must take place. As he flies away, Beast and Logan are uncertain of his decision.

Angel and his dad meet up again, Angel righfully chastises his father for ridding the world of mutants, while Warren II claims it to be for their own good, they're sick and need help, however Angel once again chastises him, even claiming to him, that him his son was more of a shame, a discrease, leading to Angel releasing his wings, and swearing to his father that he won't let him remove his wings ever.

However that is the case, as Warren is chased down by MRD choppers and suppressed by harpoon net that caused his wings to be stuck, unable to help him fly. He falls to the ground hard, and confronted by Moss once again, getting even with Angel.

Angel is later taken to a medical hospital as his father confronts Moss, who claimed to not have known Angel was his son, and could've been subuded safely if he'd been "honest with the MRD". A grief stricken Warren II tells him to leave. A doctor arrives to show the X-rays on Angel's body and wings, and his father without his son's permission, orders the removal of his wings, permanently. This of course backfires, as an unstable, Angel screams in horror, demanding where his father is. The Doctor sedates him, and finds his father who basically calls him fool, as now his wings are gone, but his mindset may require healing, via therapy.

Hours later, Angel hears an eery whispher calling out to him, and calls himself "Essex". It is revealed that Sinister has been watching over him for quite sometime and is sadden by his wings being gone, but however with his advanced technology and expertise, can restore his wings better than before. Angel then calls for a nurse, but Sinister's words give him ideas to go forth to him. However instead he goes back to the X-mansion. Where he is greeted by the X-men, who believe it was a bad choice to leave the hospital, Beast offers bad news to Angel, when asked of the heaviest chance of his Wings ever returning, that his wings could return but in a one out of million chance, as it is like loosing a limb. Instead they try to offer solace, but Angel instead refers to Sinister as a chance to get his wings back. Obviously they think it is basically making a deal with the devil himself, as all of their experiences with Sinister has led to barbaic attempts to claim every single mutant dna's regardless of the choices either side makes. As Wolverine himself understands his pain, he assures him it's not the right choice. Angel then stares at the sky watching birds fly, sadly reminding him of his times as Angel. Desperately he rushes to Sinister's lab, where he is placed on a metal table, and Sinister tells him that once the operation is done he "will be a new man". Angel falls asleep, as Sinister injects Archangel with machines similar to Weapon X equipment that once altered Wolverine's mind, and begins to alter his body and mind, as his skin turns pale blue and his wings turn metallic, with a diamond on his forehead. Sinister grins as the operation is a success and calls Angel... Archangel!

With new wings, Archangels heads directly back to this fathers's building ransacking the building, destroying the Legacy virus, and forcing him to lock himself within a vault. It isn't until Archangel is stopped by Wolverine and later Storm, who both try to reason with him, Archangel is unable to stop, claiming that all is lost, and that he cannot revert back to his heroic self, however Storm still thinks he can change by stopping all of the damage. The diamond on his head emits an amythest flare of light, possibly Sinister telekinetically commanding Archangel. Storm unleashes lightning that knocks Warren out. But it is only until his father emerge from the vault and asks the two if Warren will be okay, enraged they call him out for not seeing his son for he was, which allows Archangel to escape.

Archangel chases after Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Jean Grey.

Archangel chases after Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Jean Grey.

Archangel is not seen again until "Shades of Grey", where he is now a muted servant, sent to get Cyclops and Jean Grey who was discovered in a hospital. Cyclops manages to defeat Archangel but then manages to disable their X-truck and capture Scott and Jean allowing Sinister to get their DNA for other purposes. Archangel along with the Marauders are then told to kill them, but the X-Men arrive and stop them. Archangel escapes, as Wolverine decides to let him go.

Age of Apocalypse[]

Archangel possibly continued to serve under Sinister's heel, until his master Apocalypse saw potential within him, turning him from Archangel to Death as his horseman and helped his masters defeat the X-Men, get revenge on the MRD and humans, and rule the world with an iron hand.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third version of Archangel/Angel to appear in a tv series.
  • Unlike the comics and the X-Men TAS Angel is not given his metallic powers by Apocalypse but Mr. Sinister and wanted to get rid of his wings.
  • It is stated in the comics, that Archangel eventually gets his organic wings back, which was foreshadowed by Beast in "Guardian Angel".
  • In the comics Archangel, has a relationship with Domino and Storm.
  • In the AOA comics, Angel never became Archangel but kept his wings, and strayed away from Apocalypse and Sinister and the X-Men.
  • Had the series continued the X-Men would've continued to find a way to free Archangel from Sinister's control
  • He would also continue to be Archangel in the AOA future as concept art and scripts of the second season showcased him with his Archangel form.
  • His appearance as Archangel along with Apocalypse and AOA Cyclops, foreshadowed the Horsemen of Apocalypse a powerful small War Party of 5, as Archangel was a member of the team in the comics and in the 1990s show as Death.
  • A comatose Xavier was going to get captured by Archangel in the start of season 2, and fight Colossus, Shadowcat, Magik and Iceman in Magik User.
