Stop hand

Heh! That's quite a fierce expression for such a wee little scamp. That face tells me you're not just another mindless Trainer brat. The name is Archie. The rough-looking lot you see here are members of my team―Team Aqua. So tell me, boyo/girlie… Do you know that Pokémon, people, and all life in this world depend on the sea for life? That's right. The sea is an irreplaceable treasure for every living thing on this planet. But with our selfish extravagance, humanity dirties the great ocean, destroying this source of all life… Day by day, we're all destroying our most precious resource! If we humans suffer from our actions, well, maybe we'll end up getting what we deserve. But what about the Pokémon in our world? The Pokémon that no longer have a place to live because we stole and soiled their seas? The Pokémon that won't have a place to raise their young and watch them grow? We are creating a world in which innocent Pokémon suffer as a result of our actions… And that is something that I can't forgive! That's why I came to a decision, see? The foolish actions of my fellow humans, the seas we have blighted, nature itself… I will return everything to its unspoiled beginnings!
~ Archie introducing himself and explaining his goal to the player in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.

Archie (Japanese: アオギリ Aogiri) is an antagonist in the Pokémon series, serving as one of the two main antagonists of the Hoenn Pokémon games and its anime adaption (the other one being Maxie).

He is the boss of Team Aqua who desires to expand the world's ocean so that Pokémon can live better lives without humanity's pollution, and thus seeks to awaken and control the ancient Sea Basin Pokémon, Kyogre. He is also the arch-rival of Maxie, the boss of Team Magma. An alternate version of him appears as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket.

In Japanese, he has been voiced by Masaki Aizawa in the anime, Rikiya Koyama in Pokémon Generations, and Tsuguo Mogami (who has also voiced Musashi Miyamoto in Record of Ragnarok) in Pokémon Masters. In English, he has been voiced by Sean Schemmel in the anime, Jamieson Price in Pokémon Generations, and Adin Rudd in Pokémon Masters.

Biography[]

In the games[]

Archie is the head of Team Aqua. In Pokémon Ruby/Pokémon Omega Ruby, Archie helps the player against Team Magma. He doesn't have an active role in the storyline and can't be battled.

In Pokémon Sapphire/Pokémon Emerald/Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, he first appears in the Oceanic Museum in Slateport City, trying to steal the Devon Goods from Captain Stern. Later, Team Aqua members steal a Meteorite from Professor Cozmo in Meteor Falls, and use it to try to turn Mt Chimney into a lake. Then, after Shelly raids the Weather Institute, Archie steals the Red Orb from Mt. Pyre. Later, he and the Team Aqua members turn up in Slateport again as Captain Stern announces a discovery he has made about a seafloor cavern. Team Aqua promptly steals the Submarine Explorer 1 that Captain Stern has built and goes for the Seafloor Cavern to awaken Kyogre. When defeated a third time, Archie sees the error of his ways, later disbanding Team Aqua and attempting to stop Groudon and Kyogre's fight.

During the Delta episode of Alpha Sapphire it is revealed that Zinnia was the one who influenced Archie into attempting to revive Kyogre in the first place; Zinnia knew that Archie would be unable to control Kyogre and it would promptly go on a rampage which would cause a disaster big enough that would require Rayquaza's intervention to stop it, giving Zinnia the chance to instruct Rayquaza to destroy the incoming meteorite that would threaten Hoenn, thus making Archie an unknowing pawn of Zinnia the whole time.

Rainbow Rocket[]

An alternate timeline version of Archie who succeeded in his goals appears in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, teaming up with Giovanni, Maxie, Cyrus, Ghetsis and Lysandre to form Team Rainbow Rocket.

He was transported to this world after he was swept away by a giant tidal wave upon successfully expanding the oceans and teams up with Team Rainbow Rocket. Although he wants to return to his homeworld, he intends to expand this one's oceans, after battling and defeating him, he instructs the player to press a button on the painting in his office to continue across the Team Rocket's Castle. After the player defeats both him and Maxie, he encounters Maxie and decides to resolve their conflict by battling him only to be transported back to their homeworlds by Colress.

Pokémon Masters[]

Archie appears as an obtainable sync pair in Pokémon Masters, being first introduced for the Masters of Land and Sea event as a scoutable sync pair. A five-star sync pair, he uses a Kyogre who represents the Water type.

In the event, Archie is first seen talking to a little girl about the whereabouts of Kyogre (who had just been spotted in Pasio), before turning attention to the player. Talking to them first on their bravery and his true nature, Archie vents about his frustrations with people destroying the ocean and Pasio's artificial nature, also noting his desire to purify the world's waters to their "unspoiled origins" before walking off to claim Kyogre. It is also later revealed that Archie wants to sink the island of Pasio, showing how much he detests the island.

Archie is next seen finding Kyogre in a cavern, with Archie offering to the legendary to help destroy Pasio, but as he does so, the player and May march in to stop them, and despite them trying to convince Archie that Pasio is just as full of life as any other place, he is firm on its harm to the oceans and its life. However, before he does anything else, Kyogre attacks the heroes.

Making their way to the beach off-screen, Kyogre, under the command of Archie, duels Scottie and May as Archie laughs about his plan coming to pass until he notices an earthquake alerting of Groudon's presence. Battling the beasts, Archie escorts the child out of the area before sending out Sharpedo to defeat the two legendary Pokémon alongside Maxie

With the help of the protagonists, Archie is able to stop the Pokémon from fighting. As the two calm down, Maxie notes of his hypothesis of Groudon and Kyogre coming to Pasio due to Maxie and Archie's presence, while May interjects with her own theory of the two simply being overwhelmed. Regardless of outcome, Archie apologizes to Kyogre for the event before the beast accepts him as his partner. The final scene of the event has both Maxie and Archie on the beach together with their admins emerging as well, and while the two appreciate their short peace and decide to hold to it for a little while longer, they still decide to continue their rivalry later as they walk away.

Archie next appears in the Hoenn-themed chapter of the second arc of the main story, with Archie and his admins standing before the team's grunts. Matt makes the suggestion to his peers on the idea of using Kyogre to destroy their rivals, to which Shelley vetoes due to it being too dangerous. This is something Archie shows agreement to (noting of Team Aqua's true goal of making the world a paradise for Pokémon), but something he also notes he isn't afraid to do when the time is right.

Despite this action not going through, the members of Team Magma and Team Aqua still find and battle each other in a nearby town, causing Brendan, May, and Wally to go investigate. This duel eventually subsides in a draw, as the leaders of both group lose interest in their unsatisfactory brawl. Even Groudon and Kyogre demanding they fight is broken up by the arrival of Rayquaza, which causes the two to flee. Due to this, the leaders of both teams decide to make the plans of finding their lost legendaries. While this goes on, Zinnia goes with Archie and Shelly to their base to warn them of the ongoing manipulation by Team Rocket, something they are first skeptical to, but later take interest in. This fear comes to reality when Matt comes possessed by dark energy and is made to attack grunts of Team Magma in a rage, requiring Brendan to step in and fight him off.

Faced with the challenge of the admins wielding legendary Pokémon and their vicious trance, the remaining members of each team work together in order to defeat Groudon and Kyogre, using the ability of reasoning to stop their assault. However, the rampaging legends (and in turn, the berserk state Courtney was is) was stopped through Steven and Zinnia using their combined powers to destroy an incoming meteor and a device Team Rocket used to make the Pokémon become uncontrollable. After learning of Team Rocket's involvement in the incident, the two rival teams decide to call a truce, putting their rivalry to the side in order to protect Pasio.

In the anime[]

Archie appeared in Gaining Groudon and The Scuffle of Legends. Archie's goal was to expand the sea of Hoenn believing that if so, the sea would be peaceful. But at the end of the latter episode, Archie was defeated and seemed to have forgotten everything.

It is unknown of Archie's whereabouts, but revealed by Officer Jenny that Archie had disbanded Team Aqua after the events for the risk of controlling Kyogre with the Red Orb.

Pokémon Adventures[]

Like his rival, Archie is noticeably more evil in his manga appearance. Archie is the head of Hoenn TV, which he uses to create the anti-Team Magma propaganda in order to cover up the actions of his own team.

When Magma had stolen Captain Stern's submarine and Aqua the key to use it, the two gangs called a temporary truce and dove to the Seafloor Cavern where they split up to search for their desired Pokémon, Archie found Kyogre first, later he was able to control both beasts with the Red and Blue Orb.

After Archie sent one of his men to steal the Red Orb, Maxie and Archie were possessed by the Orbs powers during a fight with Ruby and Sapphire and rose to Sootopolis to fight each other ending with Rayquaza descending to put a stop to Groudon and Kyogre.

Maxie and Archie, no longer possessed went insane, teamed up for real and resorted to genocide with Maxie killing Norman. After they are defeated once again, they attempt to escape with Wallace's car which is halted by an electrical barrier. Ruby's Celebi flies in to recover the orbs and the two leaders were presumed dead after that point.
