The Archons are an antagonistic race of cyborgs in the anime and manga series KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World.

Background[]

Thousands of years into the future after mankind destroyed itself in a religious war. As civilization rebuilt itself from the ashes, the "Assembly," a giant machine, was constructed to regulate human growth ranging from artificially creating life, and mandating the end of life system. During this time, human women were taken in by the government and modified into super soldiers to control the population. With the exception of Gaia, each Archon lost their memories of their human lives.

This would last for thousands of years until the arrival of Yukito Urabe, a young man who was originally born into a cult and sacrificed by his own father. Despite at first believing he was sent into another world, Mitama, the patron goddess of the cult, actually sent him thousands of years into the future.

Growing tired of the system, an Archon named Loki hears news about an isolationist camp's oddities and, becoming curious, takes the form of a human male named Clen and infiltrates Yukito's camp. From there, Loki realized that by gathering followers, she could develop godlike abilities. So, she manipulates Yukito and Mitama into helping her take down the Assembly before making herself the de facto leader of the Imperial City thus beginning her aspirations of godhood.

With the exception of Atar (the last of the Archons to awaken and the one most devoted to the Assembly), the other Archons immediately latch onto the idea of becoming gods and set out to start their own cults where some acquire several followers. Mitama speculates that the Archons somehow siphon off powers from the actual gods every time they accumulate followers.
