Ares (DC Animated Universe)

Ares is a minor antagonist in the DC Animated Universe series Justice League Unlimited, appearing as the main antagonist of the episode "Hawk and Dove".

He is the malevolent Greek God of War and one of Wonder Woman's archenemies (alongside Cheetah).

He was voiced by Michael York, who also portrayed Tybalt in Romeo & Juliet, Pterano in the The Land Before Time franchise, Count Vertigo and Montague Kane in Batman: The Animated Series, Kanto in Superman: The Animated Series, and Bernard Fremont in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. While disguised as the Northern Kaznian leader he was voiced by Lex Lang who also voiced Captain Cold, Atomic Skull, and Heat Wave.

Ares is a tall strong build man with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Biography[]

Ares visits Hephaestus, the Greek god of craftsmanship, in his workshop demanding the completion of his special order, the Annihilator, an indestructible automated battlesuit fueled by the suffering and rage of mankind. Upon adding his signature to the Annihilator's chest plate (the final touch), Hephaestus told his brother to give his creation "life". Ares unsheathed his sword, provoking the Annihilator into attack mode. Satisfied by the suit's invulnerability, Ares brought it with him to a war-torn city in the northern region of Kaznia, a country ravaged by Northern and Southern factions.

Ares poses as an American weapons salesman named "Mr. Sera" and demonstrates the Annihilator to Nardoc, the leader of the Northern faction. Although impressed by how easily it tears through a squad of his troops, Nardoc mentions how poor his people are, but Ares gave him the suit freely with the notion that he would accept payment later. Nardoc eagerly takes control of the Annihilator and uses it to defeat the opposing Southern forces, who retreated further back. He then seemingly stopped the conflict by not ordering his troops to advance past the Southern camp; a fact that made Ares furious. After trying to explain that all his people wanted was to keep their land safe from the Southerners and had no interest in a greater war, Ares blasted him with more verbal insults. Nardoc then ordered him to leave realizing the man was insane, but instead of complying Ares revealed his true identity and murdered Nardoc (offscreen) in order to take his place as leader of the Northerners by disguising himself as Nardoc; pushing both sides further into war.

Dove sneaks into the Northern camp to find Nardoc and proposes a peaceful negotiation, but Ares posing as Nardoc tells him that peace isn't really his thing and captures Dove. In the Southern camp, Hawk grabs their leader, but suddenly the camp is under attack by the Northerners. In the lead is the Annihilator, with Dove tied to its chest. Hawk tries to subdue the Southerners to keep them from firing at it, but the fighting is soon out of control. Ares appears on the battle field in his true persona, knocking away two soldiers while gleefully smiling at the devastation he has rought. Wonder Woman arrives and tells the soldiers to lay down their arms as they are being used, but he pleads fall on deaf ears. She then snatches a rifle away from one of the soldiers for insulting her and raises it over his head only to realize that their aggression is making the Annihilator more powerful.

Dove is freed by Hawk and convinces the Southern camp troops to lower their weapons as the Annihilator approaches, shutting the enchanted armored suit down and putting an end to the conflict between the two regions. Initially angered by this turn of events, Ares reluctantly accepts defeat, but promises to return next time there is another wartime situation. Diane assures the God of War that she will be there to stop him before he vanishes in front of the heroes and the Kaznians.

Trivia[]

Ares was originally meant to debut in the Justice League episode "Paradise Lost", but was replaced by Hades.
The version of Ares was modeled after his voice actor, Michael York.
