People of Thebes, reflect upon your sins. Surrender yourselves to the justice of the Gods.
~ Ares threatens the inhabitants of Thebes shortly before marching to destroy them.

Ares is a major antagonist in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok and a major character in its manga spin-off Record of Ragnarok Forbidden Legend - Apocalypse of The Gods.

He is a major antagonist of the Second Round and the Third Round, the main antagonist of Heracles' Flashback during the Fourth Round and a major antagonist from the Fourth Round and all subsequent Rounds of the Ragnarok Tournament.

Ares is the Greek God of War and one of the members of both the Twelve Gods of Olympus and the Gods' Council. Following the Gods' Council of 2000 B.C. Ares tried to destroy Thebes to send a message to the Humans, but was stopped by Alcides who, soon after, became a Greek God taking the name Heracles.

He is voiced by Hinata Tadokoro, who has also voiced Rokurōta in Hell's Paradise, in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. He is voiced by Tim Friedlander in the English dub.

Appearance[]

Ares is a very tall and extremely muscular God. He has blonde hair and gray eyes. Ares wears only a black loincloth and a red cloak, and has a black helmet decorated with intricate gold carvings.

Personality[]

Like all other Gods, Ares is very arrogant and despises Humanity, to the point that when Kojiro Sasaki managed to kill Poseidon Ares was struggling to understand how a Human could kill a God.

Despite being the Greek God of War, Ares is relatively weak, incapable, and much more emotional than the other Olympus Gods. He is easily intimidated, as demonstrated by his interaction with his younger brother Hermes, the Messenger of the Gods, and often displays genuine fear when seeing powerful attacks from Ragnarok's contestants.

Despite his flaws, Ares respected Heracles and considers him his best friend due to his indomitable will, and throughout the Fourth Round he placed great trust in him. He also knows how to be humble, as he admitted to Loki and Hermes that Heracles became stronger than him after his ascension to Godhood. After Heracles' death, Ares burst into tears and, to honor him, promised that he would fight to the end.

Biography[]

Ares is the Greek God of War, as well as one of the Twelve Gods of Olympus. At the end of the Titanomachy Zeus manages to defeat and kill his father Kronos and become the new Leader of the Universe, a fact which is not appreciated by the Primordial Goddess Gaia, who unleashes the Giants against the Greek Gods thus starting the Gigantomachy. Ares fights in the war together with the other Olympian Gods, even being seriously wounded and being forced to be blindfolded, but in the end the Gigantomachy is won by the Greek Gods after Zeus defeats the Giants in Valhalla and Hades defeats the Titans subordinate of Kronos, freed themselves from Tartarus to take advantage of the Gigantomachy to avenge their Leader.

When Python is exiled to Earth for his ugly appearance and begins to scare the inhabitants of Delphi, Ares sends his army against him to stop him, but in the end Python manages to defeat them all. It is Apollo who resolves the situation, personally intervening to exceed Ares' expectations, calming Python after defeating him.

Following the Gods' Council of 2000 B.C. it is established that Humans can continue to live, but that they must still receive punishment, and Thebes is chosen as the destination to be destroyed to send a message. Ares blocks Shiva, who wanted to go there personally, asking to be able to take care of it since Thebes is in his area of jurisdiction, and goes to the place together with his entire army to destroy the city. However, Alcides blocks their path and, seeing his inferiority towards Ares, decides to drink the Ambrosia risking his life in order to stand up to the Gods. Alcides manages to survive and obtain the physical strength of Zeus, managing to rout Ares' entire army and facing the Deity face to face. Ares and Alcides injure each other, and just before they can finish the fight, Zeus intervenes to stop the fight and convince Alcides to become a Deity in exchange for the fact that the Gods will no longer interfere in the affairs of Humans. Alcides thus ascends to Divinity and changes his name to Heracles.

After the XXI Century Gods' Council it is established that Humanity must be exterminated, but Brunhilde's intervention ensures that the Ragnarok Tournament is organized, and thus the start of the competition is established. Following this, during another meeting of the Gods' Council, Zeus chooses 12 of the 13 Gods who would be part of the Gods Fighters to represent the Gods during the Ragnarok Tournament, and establishes the Apocalypse Tournament where 16 Gods would fight each other to see who would take the last place in the Gods Fighters.

At the end of the meeting Ares, Zeus and Hermes are joined by Ra-Horakhty, enraged with Zeus for what happened. Ares tries to calm the situation, but Ra knocks him out by dehydrating him with his body's enormous temperature and prepares to fight against Zeus. The two are interrupted by Cú Chulainn, who demands the throne of Zeus if he wins the Apocalypse Tournament. Zeus pits Cú Chulainn and Ra against each other in the first match of the Round of 16 and establishes that the winner of the Apocalypse Tournament would also have the possibility of establishing a new law in the Constitution of Valhalla.

At that point, Ares watches the various matches of the Apocalypse Tournament from the stands of honor together with Zeus and Hermes.

Some time later, following the start of the Ragnarok Tournament, Ares remains on the sidelines to watch the various fights together with Hermes and Zeus. During the Second Round, Ares manages to see all of Zeus' attacks except The Fist That Surpassed Time, and becomes angry when he discovers that Hermes was able to see it instead, even going so far as to admit that even if he trained he would never beat Adam.

At the end of the Third Round, with the defeat and death of Poseidon, the Greek Gods represented by Ares, Zeus and Hermes prevent Shiva from fighting in the next match in order to personally avenge Poseidon, and for this reason they decide to deploy Heracles, with Ares admitting to Loki and Hermes that he is no longer up to him and that he considers Heracles his best friend, rooting for him all the time. In the end, Heracles is defeated and killed by Jack the Ripper and Ares comes out broken and desperate, although he decides to continue fighting in his honor.

Locked in the bathroom to cry, Ares goes out to witness Shiva's victory in the Fifth Round and subsequently watches in shock as Buddha betrays the Gods to fight for Humanity in the Sixth Round, where he first faces Zerofuku and then Hajun, all while Hades reaches Valhalla to the utter shock of Ares, who is constantly mocked and insulted by the King of Helheim. At the end of the Sixth Round Hermes suggests Ares as Buddha's replacement in the Gods Fighters, and despite being afraid Ares is about to accept when Hades intervenes and takes Buddha's place in the Gods Fighters, fighting in the Seventh Round to avenge Poseidon.

His opponent is Qin Shi Huang, who invades the VIP area of the Arena and easily sweeps Ares away twice. In the end, Hades is defeated and killed by his opponent, leaving the entire Arena in total surprise, and during the match Ares also discovers that Adamas, Zeus' brother, convinced that he had been killed by Poseidon when he attempted a coup, was saved by Beelzebub at Hades' request and transformed into the Cyborg Adamantine. After Beelzebub wins the Eighth Round, the Gods decide to field Apollo in the Ninth Round despite Ares' opposition, and despite the insistence of Apollo refuses to admit that he likes him, only doing so shortly before Apollo wins the Ninth Round.

With the score 5-4 in favor of the Gods, Ares participates in a meeting in which all the remaining Gods Fighters are present, and during which it is decided to quickly obtain the last two victories that the Gods need to win the Ragnarok Tournament. Anubis volunteers to fight in the Tenth Round, but Susano'o no Mikoto intervenes and takes his place in battle because he discovered thanks to Hermes who spied on the Valkyries (to Ares' disapproval) that in the Tenth Round for the Humans fights Soji Ojita.

Powers and Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Being the God of War, Ares is much stronger than the average God and is able to see through some of Zeus' attacks, which most Gods can only see a glimpse of, and could even rival Heracles, who possesses a physical strength on par with that of Zeus. Being one of the Twelve Gods of Olympus, Ares is one of the main Deities of the Greek Pantheon.

Divine Physiology: As a God, Ares has an unlimited lifespan and cannot die of old age. Furthermore, he possesses physical abilities far greater than those of any ordinary Human. His body cannot be damaged by mortal weapons, however it can still be damaged by unarmed attacks from individuals with superhuman strength and Divine Weapons.

Godly Abilities: Ares, in his first clash with the Demigod Heracles, managed to exchange punches with him and even managed to wound him, until Zeus intervened. When Ares kicked a still-mortal Alcides in the face, he managed to send him flying several meters away without any effort. Ares is able to see through some of Zeus' attacks, of which most Gods can only see glimpses. These attacks occur over an extremely short period of time (0.01 seconds to 0.00000001 seconds), and although his eyes and mind can follow the attacks, it is unknown whether his body can react in time. The only one of Zeus' attacks that he can't see is The Fist That Surpassed Time. In his fight against the Demigod Heracles, Ares managed to withstand the former mortal's punches, although he admitted that if Zeus had not intervened he probably would have lost in the end.

Expert Combatant: As a God of War, Ares is expert in fighting techniques, and managed to clash with Heracles in a bare-knuckle fight as a youth. He likely has many years of experience and some degree of proficiency in many weapons. Ares was able to fight in the Gigantomachy and emerge victorious, even though among the Greek Gods who participated he was the one who suffered the most wounds of all. To fight, Ares also wields a sword much larger than common ones.

Horsemanship: During his mission to destroy Thebes, Ares rode a horse admirably.

Trivia[]

  • Considering that, without Hades, Ares would have ended up being Buddha's replacement in the Gods Fighters, one can assume that had this happened, the outcome of the Seventh Round would not have changed, given Ares' weakness compared to the other fighters of the Ragnarok Tournament.
